I Thought I’d Be Hungrier for Bite Beauty Lip Rouge Multitasking Lip Color and Blush

March 17th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

Bite Beauty Lip Rouge in Nectarine

Oh, hell naw! Remember how excited I was to try the new $22 Bite Beauty Lip Rouge in Nectarine? Check it. THIS (up top) is what happened the very first time I opened the compact.

What a way to make a gal grumpy, right? I suppose one could even say it “bites.” Sure, the compact could have been damaged in shipping; it may not have had anything at all to do with Bite Beauty’s quality control, but I’ve received many other orders from Sephora, and this kind of thing’s never happened before…

Nevertheless, we persevere! I’m not going to let a possible shipping accident stand in the way of getting Lip Rouge on my lips and cheeks.

Looking at their name, you may be wondering if vampires made the new Bite Beauty line. Nope. The 50 pieces in the line, which recently went on sale at Sephora, get their name from the edible ingredients they contain — ingredients like resveratrol, a potent antioxidant.

I’d hoped that matte peach Nectarine, one of six creamy Lip Rouge shades in the line, would have a thin texture like the Urban Decay Afterglow Glide-On Cheek Tints (LOVE!) previously released for spring, but it’s surprisingly thick, almost like a matte lipstick.

I thought that might make it difficult to work with, but it only takes a couple of swipes to apply and then blend on my cheeks. A single layer produces a flushed yet natural look.

Unfortunately, there’s one vampiric attribute the color could greatly benefit from: longevity. On my combination oily/dry skin, it doesn’t last long, and whether atop foundation or bare skin, the color’s all but gone within four hours.

As a lipstick, I’d call it just a’ight. It has neither a flavor nor a scent, so which is fine by me, but it feels thick and heavy on my lips. I’ve also noticed that Nectarine seeks out any flakes or cracks, drawing unwanted attention to them (eww!). Here again, the wear time isn’t spectacular, with the color lasting about an hour.

If I were determined to find a place for Bite Beauty Lip Rouge in my life, I’d keep it around as a blush, applying it on top of a primer, with a powder blush on top of that (this is me jumping through hoops).

If you like thick, pigmented cream blushes, you still might give it a go, but I think Bite Beauty Lip Rouge is heading back to Sephora soon…

PRICE: $22 each (six shades)
AVAILABILITY: Available now at select Sephora stores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: C+ (rich, blendable pigments are its saving grace)

Jennifer is the new Katniss!

Fellow hungry girls, have you heard that 21-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, fresh off her Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone, is slated to play Katniss, the lead character in the upcoming Hunger Games movie?

I DEVOURED all three books in the series and can totally see JM doing Katniss well.

I hope director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) pulls out all the stops. My inner sci-fi nerd would have liked to see J.J. Abrams at the helm, but whatcha gonna do…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

thank you so much for introducing me to this book series! i absolutely adored all three books, they really hold a candle to enders game i think! i felt so sad when i was done reading the series, but now i’m excited about the possibility of reliving the books through the movie.

You’re welcome. 🙂 I agree — it’s some of the best young adult sci-fi I’ve come across in a long time.

It’s been a few years since I’ve re-read Ender’s Game. I think I need to take it out soon!

BTW, are you Team Peeta or Team Gale?

Hm, see, the whole lip thing popping out of the canister would’ve bummed me out for about two seconds for me. I’d show my mom with a big sad puppy face and then it would been “Mission Take Out Super Glue and Reattach Pot to Canister.” I take great pride in my Super Glue reattachment projects; I seem to have to do it often.

I’ve never read The Hunger Games. I keep thinking it might be like the show The Colony on the Discovery channel since I know The Hunger Games is a post-Apocalypse series; that show is a way, way, way too disturbing for me. I’m a wimp, I know.

Yea, that’s sort of a bummer when that happens, but I guess it’s how you view it. Makeup and nail bottle tops coming off on the first time, while annoying, I’ll be bummed for two seconds and go fix it. Those are easy fixes for me. New clothes that get a quarter sized hole in it after the first wash? I’ll be fuming because you can’t fix that without it being obvious! That means going out, standing in line, explaining to the lady that NO, I did not purposely put that hole in the shirt and getting my money back!

I’d probably be pretty mad if my makeup or nail polish arrived broken, but that hasn’t happened yet (knock on wood).

i agree w/ ya — jj abrams would have been spot on for the hunger games movies. so i like jennifer: she strikes me as spunky and gutsy: characters katniss has in heaps.

in my mind though … i saw katniss as really young at the start of the series. i was kinda rooting for the girl in true grit to play katniss. but still — no major complaints about the casting.

awww that sux that that particlar bite product didnt make you smile! :/ but thanks for the review and for the fair warning!

You know that the upside of this makeup tragedy is that you’ll need to get the equivalent amount of resveratrol from 5 glasses of red wine, right? 🙂 Serious bummer on the compact, though. I haven’t seen Winter’s Bone yet, but I hope Jennifer will make an awesome Katniss!!

I am the biggest Hunger Games geek, and…

I don’t see her as Katniss.

She’s not tan, dark haired, she’s “traditionally pretty”… and her eyes aren’t grey. Plus she’s too old. What? :[

While I realize they can fake bake her, give her contacts, dye and make her up, but it doesn’t work for me. I’m sure she’s a great actress, but to me, Katniss is natural and raw. I can scope out a makeup tan and contact lenses VERY fast. The Capitol may wear contacts and dye their hair, but Katniss certainly does not.

Perhaps I’m bitter because I act and have grey eyes. I’ll accept that, but I almost wish there wouldn’t be a movie. There will be fangirls and it will be too mainstream. 🙁

Anywhoo, I’m not digging it. Kaya Scodelario would’ve been a better Katniss, or better yet, an unknown. Kaya’s still too pretty for the part, too. Katniss is described as average and is made fun of her looks by Gale. SO MANY DETAILS were MISSED in this casting!!

Rant is over XD I’m sure she can act, but I’m concerned about sticking to the book.

Glad to see someone else loves HG as much as I do!!

As for Bite, it bites that you only gave it a C+. I appreciate the review because that exact color was the one I was lusting after. That and Apple. Now I am going to wait to place a Sephora order and get the deluxe sample rather than ordering it outright to see if it works for me. Thanks!
