I Say Yes to Cucumbers in My Hair: Yes to Cucumbers Color Conditioner

December 14th, 2010 by Karen 30 Comments

Tabs has really been riding me lately to find a good cruelty-free drugstore conditioner. He even threatened to swipe my ankles if I didn’t produce something this week worthy of sharing on the blog. I focussed the search on volumizing products designed to cut down on frizz, since those are both hair issues of mine, and I think I may have found something to save my ankles from Tabs. They call it Yes to Cucumbers Color Care Conditioner ($9).

With a mild cucumber scent, this lightweight, moisturizing conditioner is marketed to gals with color-treated hair, which I have, but I’m so impressed by it that I’d wager it would also do wonders for other types of hair (particularly fine, limp hair because it is quite volumizing).

Not only is it cruelty free, but it’s also made from 99.6% natural ingredients, including minerals harvested from the Dead Sea, organic cucumbers, centaurea extract (an extract from a flower that’s supposed to help prevent brassiness) and green tea. Most of the ingredients are also plant extracts, way up on list, and there’s no mention of silicones among the ingredients at all.

I love the volume I get from using this because it works without leaving behind a thick layer of goop — just lots of lift and body.

It’s a little on the expensive side for a drugstore conditioner, but the 16.9-oz. bottle’s pretty big.

PRICE: $9 for a 16.9-oz. bottle
AVAILABILITY: At most drugstores, grocery stores and yestocarrots.com

I love the big bottles that Yes to does they are always quite generous. Mmm something else for me to buy when my Pantene runs out.

      Hi Annabella,

Yes (heehee!), the big bottles are a huge plus! I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, you know?

Have you tried any of their other hair stuff? I think I want to get the Yes to Cucumbers Leave In Conditioner next.

I’ve been trying to look for a good sulfate free shampoo for my fine non volumized hair, I wonder if the shampoo will be just as good.

      Hi Tavi,

I’ve heard it’s good but I haven’t gotten around to trying it yet! Will let you know if I do. 🙂

I will say as a fine-hair person I did not find the Volumizing Tomatoes from the Yes To! line to work for me, but it’s not really a good idea when I’m thin/fine and blonde… volumizing is just not the best idea.

        Hi Bunny,

What’s the scent like? I’m curious about the tomatoes line but don’t want to walk around with my hair smelling like a salad, LOL!

I saw the Cucumbers line when I was at Target this weekend. I like that it is volumizing and made of natural ingredients. Thanks for sharing! I will definitely check this out.

      Hi Ruchita,

You’re welcome! I wish I could say “Give ’em a sniff!” next time you’re at Target, but the bottles are sealed shut! I think you might like the scent, though. It’s light and very fresh. 🙂

I was thinking the same thing about that huge 500 mL bottle. Pretty good sized for a conditioner. I’m almost down to the last spray of my Pravana leave-in, but I like it so much that I don’t think I can be persuaded to change brands any time soon.

On a completely random side-note, one of our reps sent the office a huge care package of Trader Joe treats. She does this every year and we love her for it, particularly since we don’t have a TJs near us. The downside is that I’m looking at about 20 bags of goodies on the filing cabinet outside my door. Someone should put a treadmill there instead. 🙂

LOL! I’d walk on that thing while eating a box of Dark Chocolate Stars. 🙂

      What did she send?

        Now you’re talking! 🙂

She sent bags of Pop Chips and popcorn, Jalapeno “cheetos”, blue chips, queso and salsa, sweet potato chips and snappea crisps (my fave), pita chips, veggie chips, pretzels, cookies, banana chips, some packages of chocolate, mango slices, dried cranberries and jujy/jelly fruit rings, m&ms, some crackers, and more.

I think I gained 10 pounds just typing all that! 🙂

Hmm I’ll have to give that a try! I love all their other products but hadn’t tried any of the hair care line yet. 🙂 I’m always on the lookout for a conditioner that’s lightweight enough for my fine hair but also moisturizes enough!

I’m interested in trying this line. I want to be more conscious of parabens and that bad-for-you jazz!

Have you ever tried the Fekkai volumizing line? I’ve heard great things about it, and it smells so good. I love their glossing line, so I’m thinking of trying the volumizing line next. It’s expensive, but it’s available at Bath and Body Works, and they have lots of coupons and discounts time.

i really love the shampoos from JF Lazartique. Their pure botanical line is paraben free . I’m in love with the orange oil shampoo– has oat, apple, brazilian walnut ingredients . the orange oil also comes in a mask and leave in conditioner. for volumizing –their Body giving shampoo is really nice. In between these I also sometimes use the “detoxifying ” anti-pollution shampoo which is also paraben free
