Hourglass Is Warming Up To Summer

April 26th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

Girls who wear warm colors well may like this year’s summer collection from Hourglass Cosmetics. It’s a tiny collection (just two pieces), and they aren’t the least expensive kids on the block.

What do we mean by “warm” or “cool” colors?

  • Colors that lean toward red, orange or yellow, or contain their undertones (many browns, yellowish greens and orangey reds), are generally considered warm shades.
  • Colors that lean blue or green (or bluish pink, purple, blueish green, magenta or blueish red) are typically called cool.

These two siblings hover in Chanel price airspace…Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset will set you back $40, and Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Fortune clocks in at $28, but Hourglass makes sure you get good stuff for your money.

Fortune on the lips; Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo on cheeks

Creme-to-Powder-Bronzer Duo in Sunset houses a creamy, warm pink blush and a warm golden brown bronzer in a snazzy swivel-top compact. Both the blush and bronzer have all-day staying power, resist streaking and dry to a natural-looking matte finish.

I LOVE how pigmented the both of them are, and thankfully Hourglass didn’t chintz on the size of the pans. Still, this guy’s mad pricey! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+/A-

Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Fortune’s shimmery warm golden pink looks a lot like one of my all-time favorite products out there, the mighty MAC Nymphette!

I like the thin, non-sticky texture but wish it lasted longer than two hours. Like other Extreme Sheen Glosses I’ve tried, it’s also pleasantly hydrating, ahh… Might be an option if you’ve been searching for a color like Nyphette but aren’t a fan of sticky MAC gloss. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Based on pure pigment alone, I think the bronzer/blush duo probably offers the better value. Add to that excellent wear time, and it spells a pretty good deal. 🙂

Both tiny tidbits shimmy onto Sephora and Barneys counters next month.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi House of Accessories,

I got ’em at H&M a few months ago. 🙂 I love ’em because they’re kinda beachy.

If only I had the money… The duo looks amazing and the compact looks like some Japanese cellphone. I’m pretty sure the dudes would mistake it for a geeky sleek gadget 😉

      Hi Ashley,

Ha, ha, I bet that happens often. A dude asks to borrow his girl’s cellphone and instead gets a bronzer/blush duo. 🙂

I love hourglass packaging, it’s so sleek and minimalistic. The bronzer duo looks super pretty on you! I’ve already got a gloss similar to Nymphette, so I think I’ll pass on the Hourglass version, but I do love golden pinks for summer. Plans for tonight: study until I pass out. Then wake up and eat some Nutella. And back to studying…

The blush/bronzer combo looks awesome on you! The gloss looks AMAZING. Love the gold shimmers in it.

My Monday’s been pretty blah so far, sadly. So tired I didn’t get anything done in lab. Should have come home like 5 hours ago and just napped. As it is now I have to get some homework done and then go to bed so I can get up bright and early tomorrow. *sigh*

You look gorgeous with the blush/bronzer and lipgloss on! Love it on you! I would love to try these, but do you think they would work on an NW20-25 skin tone? You’re an NC, right? I will have to save my pennies if I want these little beauties!

How cool is that swivel-top compact?! That might be worth the $40 on its own! Too bad about the wear time on the gloss, but it does look nice on you! 🙂

I bought an Hourglass gloss a few months back – gave me the worse allergic reaction. After seconds of wearing it felt warm on my lips. Not a good thing. The next day my lips were raw and peeling. Sad because it was a lovely color and I liked the sweet scent it had…

Karen, can I ask how you applied the colors to your cheeks? I always have trouble contouring with cream formulas. Yours looks mad good – any tips?

      Hi Kristen,

The brush makes a huge difference. Are you using a synthetic brush? I loooove the MAC 187 for cream products.

Thanks for the tip – I’d actually been mulling over this brush for awhile! I think I’m going to pick it up. I’d been using a foundation brush for cream products. It’s ok…but not spectacular.

That blush looks amazingly natural on you and makes you look younger. I have NO luck with blushes 🙁 They all look fake on me. Too pasty I guess!

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
