Get Soft, Bouncy Volume with $3 Suave Touchable Finish Hairspray

April 5th, 2011 by Karen 63 Comments

Suave Touchable Finish

Can I just say that I’ve been having a serious Suave moment lately? I tried their Dry Shampoo a couple weeks ago and was blown away by how well it worked — and not just because it’s $3.

Turns out their new Touchable Finish Hairspray is another $3 gem. An aerosol hairspray designed to add light hold without weighing hair down, it’s designed to compete with Sebastian Zero Gravity Hairspray, which costs about $10 more.

I’ve never tried Sebastian’s version before, but now that I’ve found this one, I may not have to. 🙂

When I apply Touchable Finish before and after using my curling iron to style my hair, I’m shocked by how soft, bouncy and voluminous my curls look.

I like the light citrus scent and the fact that it dries so quickly (takes about a minute). Suave says the product’s anhydrous formula (which means it doesn’t contain water) accelerates drying time.

Oh, and this stuff doesn’t flake either, which is a big plus, especially when I skip washing my hair at night. When I brush and restyle my ‘do the next morning, there’s no product buildup or flakes in my hair at all.

Note, for any girls (or guys!) trying to avoid silicones, this does contain two: dimethicone and cycolpentasiloxane. But both are listed near the end of the ingredient list.

If you’re looking for a flexible hairspray for soft, bouncy, voluminous hair, this could be the best $3 around.

PRICE: $3 for a 9.4-oz. can
AVAILABILITY: Available now at select drugstores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

I’m going to the grocery store right now and I really need to pick some of these Suave haircare products up. I don’t yet know what works for my hair so I might as well start with something affordable. Thanks for the variety in what you review Karen. You introduce me to things I never considered, high and low end.

Do you think this is comparable to Aveda’s Air Control? It, too, has a dry delivery with workable hold. Great stuff, but $3 would be better than $24!

hmmm… have you ever tried Bumble & Bumble’s classic hairspray? If you have, is it at all similar to that?

p.s. I decided to try Suave’s Root Boost spray after the dry shampoo rocked my world. Turns out that’s ANOTHER good $3 buy. It doesn’t seem to last all day, but it works (I think) just as well as Living Proof’s root lifting spray.

      Hi Shannon,

I haven’t. I have tried their Spray du Mode, which is very similar to this. Here’s a review, along with a gawd awful picture of my hair in the ’80s:

hahahaha, I *LOVE* the 80’s hair!! I haven’t tried Spray de Mode, but it sounds fairly similar to the Classic spray (which I love). I neeeed to check this stuff out!

I really like the root boost spray. Technically, Suave’s version and Living Proof’s spray are the only two root lifting sprays that I’ve tried, and I find them to be remarkably similar. I like the fact that it’s a spray, and not a mousse – I always seem to have problems applying root-lifting mousse to my hair in an effective way. The spray does provide noticeable lift to my roots – there is a striking difference between my hair at 4pm yesterday (when I didn’t use it) and 4pm today (when I did use it). It definitely relaxes as the day wears on, but it’s still much better than when I use no product at all. Overall, these are my favorite things about it: there’s no crunchiness (YAY), it smells good, and it provides a decent-but-still-natural amount of lift. And it’s $3.
And it works as well as a $26 specialty product.
Suave says you can spray it on dry roots and blow dry your hair again to revitalize your volume. I haven’t tried that yet, though, so I don’t know how effective it is.
        ha! Now that I’ve written you a novella… 🙂

p.s. for your reference, my hair is now about shoulder-length and is only layered on the bottom few inches of my hair (I’d say my layers stop about mid-neck). My hair has a touch of natural wave, but not much. Ultimately, I have a haircut that is fairly difficult to infuse with volume due to its length (and therefore, its heaviness), and this stuff definitely helps.

Sweet! I’m a Suave fan too but use their Maximum Hold pump hairspray. The result is not exactly touchable but it helps keep my volume throughout the day and it doesn’t look like a hair helmet. 🙂 I’ve actually tried the Sebastian and really disliked it. I felt it was heavy, didn’t hold well and smelled terrible. Of course, everyone’s hair and sense of smell is different.

Aw, you know we don’t count the late 80s. I remember when my hair used to crunch (like it was made from spiral icicles). I’m also convinced my bangs could have been used as a lethal weapon, if needed. 🙂

I remember using that glittery, tinted mousse (brown), but can’t remember the brand. OMG, I’m totally laughing now. Side wings, tall bangs and lots of spiral perm. There was a spritz gel from L’Oreal’s Studio line that was popular, too. It’s sad I can remember this but forget what’s going on today! I think the fact that we teased our bangs to a ridiculous height before securing them with 40 tons of “freeze” hair spray might have been a factor, too! HAHA!

Suave has really come up in the world! Their 2 in 1 smoothing shampoo and conditioner from their Professionals line is great for busy Moms like me who find that a seperate conditoner takes too many precious minutes. I haven’t used hairspray in awhile, but I want to try this!

I’m usually not a 2-in-1 kinda girl because my hair is so dry and needs conditioner, but this has me intrigued. It looks great for mornings when I want to work out early and don’t have a lot of time to get ready. How long have you been using it?

I have been using this for about a year now, since Kim was born. I’m usually not a 2 in 1 girl either because my hair is super dry and coarse. But, this shampoo is very hydrating and smoothing. I use it on the days when I am in a real rush to get in and out of the shower. It smells nice and does not leave any kind of residue, despite being very moisturizing. For about 3 or 4 dollars, it’s worth a try. I love good products, so I will still use my Kerastase treatment (Oleo Relax) once a week, but this Suave shampoo does the trick during the week. Between the two, my hair is pretty moisturized and the coarse texture is manageable. I also like that unlike other 2 in 1 shampoos that I have tried, there’s hardly any buildup and my hair isn’t limp.

By the way, Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo is my new fave brush cleaner. It’s meant for daily use, so it’s not drying or stripping, but it is clarifying though. It cleans cream shadow, foundation, and gel eyeliner off your brushes like a champ and a little goes a long way. Be careful of using too mush on powder brushes or you’ll be rinsing for awhile. Smells great and leaves no residue. Afterwards, my brushes dry so soft and squeaky clean. Great to use once a week on your hair to get the product gunk out. Also, great for your dogs!

Funny you should mention that product… I have a bottle in my bathroom waiting for a road test. I usually have trubs with mousses too (can’t stand crunchy curls), so I’m stoked to hear that you like it. How do you apply it? Do you use anything else with it, or do you just put it on and go?

I shake out my hair to separate the curls, scrunch with an old t-shirt to get rid of extra water, and then scrunch in the mousse. You know how when you rub your hands together and the mousse kinda deflates and turn to liquid? Not this stuff. It stays creamy. I run my hands lightly over the surface of the hair and scrunch. That’s it. It dries without getting sticky, crunchy, or flaky. Let me know what you think. Definitely love the cost savings over my other fav Deva Curls An-gel.
