From the Moment I Laid Eyes on Guerlain’s Écrin 4 Couleurs in Coup de Foudre, It Was, in Fact, Love at First Sight

February 14th, 2013 by Karen 34 Comments

Guerlain's Écrin 4 Couleurs in Coup de Foudre
Here I’m wearing Guerlain’s new Écrin 4 Couleurs in Coup de Foudre ($59, new for spring 2013) on my eyes and cheeks

Love at first sight.

This, according to Google Translate, which tells me that Coup de Foudre, also known as the name of Guerlain’s new spring quad, means “love at first sight” in English.

And yes, it was (love at first sight). First time I opened this gorgeous gold compact, I made goo-goo eyes at it and twirled a lock of hair around a finger like I was trying to get it to buy me a drink at the bar.

Haha! 🙂

Guerlain Coup de Foudre
Hey, baby, what’s your sign? I’m a Gemini, in case you were wondering…

Coup de Foudre shocked me in a couple different ways. First, the $59 price is alarming. Second, I think it’s supernatural… I keep expecting to see it on an episode of Lost Girl or Grimm!. Its gray, jade green, khaki and coral powder shadows are so enchanting that I bet even sirens and succubi would struggle to resist them.

Why?

Because this is a damned fine quad, babe! An expensive one, for sure, but I think Guerlain struck near perfection.

I mean, where do I start?

How ’bout here: when you’re 37, sometimes you have to do the math in your head to remember your age (mark my words, it’ll happen). On top of that, shimmery finishes become really challenging.

Most shimmery finishes, that is. Coup de Foudre has magic shimmer — shimmer that glows on my lids without accenting my fine lines.

When I wear these shadows and look in the mirror, I feel like asking, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s that 27-year-old looking back at me!? Hot damn and hallelujah!!” 🙂

And that coral? I expected scary, but it’s not. Be warned, though, because it’ll turn you into a coral eye shadow believer (you’ve been warned!). Swept into the crease, it works like a potion of vitality, brightening my eyes and making them look more alert. Oh, yeah — and it even doubles as a blush.

Best of all, all four shades WERK! I barely have to windshield wiper with my 217 to blend any of these into each other, and when it comes to wear time, they scoff at 14 hours with very little creasing or fading. As for fallout, “Hell, naaaw!”

Oh, and if you happen to have an orange or coral top, introduce it to Coup de Foudre. I have a feeling they’ll look amazing together. In fact, I’m using this as an excuse to go shopping (“But these would look fab with Coup de Foudre!”). Haha.

Ya done good, Guerlain. Love this quad with a capital .

PRICE: $59
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Saks Fifth Avenue stores, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+ (virtual perfection despite the price)

Karen

Oh, I love that shade too! In the sunlight a bit of gold shows through…almost like it’s a duochrome. 🙂

Guerlain should appoint you as their new spokesperson because you wear their new collection well!

I am so with you about the shimmer. I have a “few” years (eek!) and I have to be real careful about shimmers and frosts. I love the palette, though I admit I’m a bit afraid of the coral. It might look too jarring against my skin.

      Hi Rose,

Ya know, I was afraid it would be a little too much on me too, but I was really, really surprised to find it so wearable. You should try it at least once. 🙂

Yaaay I knew this would look HOT on you! I probably still buy a whole bunch of coral eyeshadows, but now I think they can totally work! It’s not bad as a blush either 🙂

Will it sound creepy to wish to bump into you in Sephora when I go there from here in the Philippines so I can consult with you on what to buy/hoard from there?

Remember how I had to have the Givenchy Candide Garden quad? I’m feeling the same way about this Guerlain beauty. I think the coral looks amazing. The only part I’m not in love with (for me) is the green, so I’m hoping I can resist. Because I almost never wear shadow and this quad is spendy. 🙂

      Hi Kim,

Yeah! Whenever I bust that one palette out I think of you. When was the last time you wore it?

No wonder, the way I went on and on about it! 🙂 I did actually wear the orange and peach last week. I was trying to perk up my tired eyes, but it wasn’t super helpful. Which was not the palette’s fault at all. Nothing was going to cut it but anything warm just made it worse. Bad planning by me! And, of course, it’s the coral that I love most about *this* palette. I may never learn. 🙂

That looks so pretty on you. Do you think it would work well for fair complexions with cool undertones? I just wonder about the coral mostly. I love greens. BTW your review of the Dior Cherie 854 palette inspired me to order – can’t wait until it gets here!

This sounds really off-topic but your hair looks fabulous. It’s big and voluminous but it’s.. fluffy and the curls are so pretty! Agh! Can you do a hair tutorial or is your natural hair like that 😀 x

Love the colors! They do look very approachable with just the right amount of shimmer. A girl can never have too much eyeshadow! Also, a bit off topic- your pictures on your blog are divine! Absolutely beautiful lighting, which can be fiercely difficult to achieve. Any quick tips? –
