Do $8 Sonia Kashuk Velvety Shine Lip Crayons Give the $22 Bobbi Brown Lip Crayons a Run for Their Money?

August 8th, 2009 by Karen 34 Comments

Seriously, let’s just hand Sonia Kashuk the keys to the drugstore makeup queendom already.

SK consistently creates quality makeup able to pass for department store stuff, and the best part is it’s *always* affordable.

Like her $8 Velvety Shine Lip Crayons from last spring…

They’d be almost dupes for Bobbi Brown Lip Crayons ($22) if it weren’t for the fact that they cost a fraction of the price.

Swatches from left to right: Sonia Kashuk Pale Pink, Bobbi Brown Posey, Sonia Kashuk Luscious Pink

Sonia’s lip crayons even feel like their far more expensive Bobbi cousins, with a similar non-sticky texture, opaque coverage and super shiny finish. Plus, like Bobbi’s crayons, Sonia’s last all day without drying out my lips.

Pale Pink

Bobbi’s lip crayons do come in a wider selection of colors, though, and I like the faint cooling sensation they produce.

But I’m not sure those make them worth the extra cost…

Sonia Kashuk’s Velvety Shine Lip Crayons come in three shades (Hot Pink, Pale Pink and Luscious Pink). I’ve tried Luscious Pink (a creamy rose) and Pale Pink (a creamy pinkish coral).

I’m totally in love with Pale Pink; it’s almost twins with Bobbi Brown’s Posey, which I wore a few days ago in my look for Ivy League. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A-to-the-PLUS!

I didn’t see the Velvety Shines available on the Target website, but they should be carried in your local store.

Saturday plans?

It looks like the fog took a day off today here in the Bay Area, so we just might get a sunny day.

No big plans for me other than a run around the neighborhood, and then maybe a trip to the mall to do some window shopping.

I promised myself that I couldn’t have any fun, though, until I got my laundry done, boo! The only clean shirts I have left either have holes in ’em or look like they’re made out of cat fur. 🙂

Four loads o’ laundry, here I come!

What are you up to today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Nice, I was just thinking about buying Posey but now i’ll just get SK’s pale pink instead (if they’re still available), thanks for the tip Karen 🙂 As for my Sat. plans, i’m going to the gym after I finish my coffee, then it’s off to get a mani/pedi. I did a lot of my house cleaning last night. Who know’s what tonight will bring me 😉 Have a nice Saturday Karen!

      Hi Michelle,

I hope you can find it! 🙂

Have fun at your mani/pedi … ahh, there’s nothing like freshly painted toes to start the weekend off right.

What are you doing at the gym? Is it a cardio or weights day for you?

I’ve got lots of laundry to do as well. Especially since the kitties decided to climb all over my clean laundry pile.

And I like the idea of the lip crayons, especially since I’m trying to get away from my lip gloss addiction – I have wayyyy too many VS lip glosses, which aren’t even that spectacular…

BTW Did you get my email with my address in it for the Sally Hansen giveaway?

      Hi Caitlin,

      Yup, I did!

Why is it cats have the knack for finding the worst piles of laundry to settle down in? I’ll never forget the time I found Tabs sleeping in a basket of freshly washed whites. I was NOT a happy camper, LOL!

Oh, I’ll definitely have to make a pitstop to target soon.

Oh, you think Tabs hair is bad? Try Zena hair all over your black choir concert dress….on the day of the concert. I had white Zena hair all over it. I used about 20 sheets of lint remover and got most of it off but I still had to throw it in the wash (thankfully, it’s machine washable) after the concert.

I’ve gotten used to her fur getting everywhere. I’ve always had shedding dogs (one black Labrador Retriever, a Greyhound, Jack Russel/Rat Terrier mix and Zena). We used to go through vacuum cleaners like mad as they all would die after about 4 vacuums after the beloved Kirby died when I was 15 after 17 years of use. And then, Dad brought home a $400 Dyson. That vacuum cleaner is a lean, mean, Zena-fur busting machine! I get mini Zena’s of fur each time I vacuum! It still hasn’t succumbed to suction death either after a year of use. I think the Dyson is staying.

Hm, that reminds me, I need to vacuum my bedroom sometime this century (I love my Dyson but at 20 or so pounds, it’s a bitch to carry up 14 stairs!).

Lip crayons are my weakness. I have some of those lip glaze sticks from Stila I got as a Christmas present, and I love them so much. I love how sharpening them keeps them clean and fresh. I’ll check these out, I have a Target gift card I need to use anyway, haha. 😀

    How’s the laundry, Karen? 😛

Today feels like a sunday to me. Maybe that’s because I was out shaking my tail feather yesterday. I’m just going to chill in the house. I made a big, lovely sephora haul yesterday (I don’t have to return a thing!!!), so I feel very accomplished. LOL

Oh, I would love a Dyson. I think hauling it up to your bedroom would count as your weights workout for the day. 🙂

    Hi Elena,

LOL, the laundry chugging along. Is it just me or does it never seem to end?!?

Would you believe I still have yet to pick up one of those Stila Lip Glazes! I need to stock up on a few.

    How’s your Saturday going?

I love the SK shine lip crayons. I have luscious pink and I think I need pale pink, too. I like her shine crayons better than the matte crayons. I suspect we’ll be seeing more colors of the shine crayons. Have you tried her double ended sheer lipstick/plumping gloss? It came out last year, but I still see it at a super target.
I love the sheer lipstick, but I hardly use the gloss side. I am SO ANTSY for the new tinted moisturizer. They put 2 new color slots in months ago, but no product yet. Why are they teasing me so much?? I’ve become a big SK fan the last couple years.

Oh, it does. I don’t do a lot of weight work (I get enough of it by playing tug-of-war with Zena) but boy it weighs a ton. Not as much as the old Kirby but it’s a hefty thing.

The cost of a Dyson is worth every single penny if you have a pet that sheds. It pays itself off with its first use. We don’t have the Animal version but just a regular Dyson and that thing is a sucking machine. I’ve never seen a vacuum pick up so much dog hair and not lose suction.

    Hi, Karen.

My absolute fave is the urban decay lipstick in Confession. I am doing cartwheels over this thing! It’s so gorgeous. I layered it to make it bold, just the way I like it. I was afraid to try urban decay lipsticks because the smell always turned me off when I played with the testers, but my tube smells so good I kept sniffing it. LOL

Oh wait, I forgot the rest of what I got. LOL

I got Oil Slick urban decay lipstick and the urban decay lip primer. I also got two makeup forever shadows in diamond green and silver. That means I’m starting my second palette of urban decay shadows. I also got another bottle of their hd elixer and aqua eyes pencil in silver. I’m on cloud 9. Makeup is a drug, I tell you.

      Hi Shontay,

LOL! No worries! I guess you were out late last night, huh?

Anyway, I totally agree with you with makeup being an addictive substance. 🙂 SO GLAD to hear you love the Urban Decay fall lipsticks! It’s weird how they’re totally wearable, huh? I just got my latest issue of the Sephora mailer the other day, and on the cover the model’s wearing a really dark, vampy lip with a fierce cat eye. I can’t wait to try the look with Confession.

BTW, I know your a MUFE girl… I think I’m gonna give the Make Up For Ever HD Powder and the HD Concealer a try. 🙂

    Hey Karen,

Lol I think my typos can be contributed to my mind going faster than my fingers and the fact that I have ten million windows open on my computer. I’m usually not so bad.

I got my sephora catalog, too and that’s why I ran out to get the mufe silver shadow and liner to recreate one of the looks. I also want to try that fierce rainbow eye that’s also in the catalog.

I’m glad to hear you’re going to try the hd powder and concealer because I love both, especially the powder.

My Saturday is going well. 🙂 I might head out to a movie with my cousin in a little bit, we’re still deciding what we might want to see (and how many snacks we can reasonably sneak in.)

I still think I need to get to a Target stat. Those lip crayons are calling me.

Have a good night, Karen! 🙂

I haven’t used lip crayons since the 90s when I used to buy those cheapie ones they sell at the register at Sally Beauty Supply. I still see them when I go pick up my hairdye, but I haven’t bought one in years. I remember them being thick, strongly pigmented, and very matte, sort of like a softer lipliner. These look really pretty though, much moister than the lip crayons I used to buy. I want to try Luscious Pink. I think I still have a balance on my Target gift card, yay!
