Bejeweled or Banging? Glamour Glosses by Too Faced

April 20th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

Experience with BeDazzler must be a requirement to work in the makeup biz because faux gems have been gracing more and more products every day.

I keep wishing they’d pull a Hanson and just quietly disappear (see: MAC’s Passions of Red and Lancome’s Deluxe Brush Set), but that’s probably not a wish this girl’s ever going to get. 🙂

In the case of the new Glamour Glosses by Too Faced ($19), I better find a way to “let it go.”

You can’t miss the GIANT fake jewel on the cap (or how it looks like it’s mocking me).

Lucky for Too Faced, the coverage on this gloss? — HELLO! Off the hizzy.

I see you, opacity

The new line of 12 lipglosses was just recently released and designed to plump the lips while adding shine and color.

I’ve been alternating between Sex Pot (a creamy lilac) and Flirt (a creamy pinkish brown), both of which light up my lips with dense, even color. A precise brush applicator and a smooth formula dish out full coverage in one coat, but what I really love about them are how their colors don’t look thick, heavy or obvious (I bet they’d look great in HD!).

From left: Sex Pot, Flirt

Cool it now

Plumping glosses aren’t normally my thing… I don’t enjoy that bee sting sensation that often comes with them, but Glamour Glosses don’t hurt. There’s a gentle cooling sensation that lasts for about a half an hour, but it’s tingly and refreshing (as opposed to searingly painful), almost like minty gum on the lips.

Too Faced claims that “rice lipids” and “dehydrated marine spheres” (wha?) give them their plumping powers, but about that … I don’t really notice much plumping with these, and that’s fine with me.

Stick it to ya

What they do offer, however, beyond rich color, is fantastic wear time. The sticky, medium-weight texture really adheres to the lips. Yesterday, Flirt stayed put for five hours, through not only a meal but also a handful of “anger management berries” and smooches with El Hub, who, incidentally, said he liked the tingle. 🙂

Sex Pot (left), Flirt (right)

As for wear time, how do they compare to the new Benefit Ultra Shine Lip Shines?

Debating between the Glamour Glosses the new Benefit glosses? I’d say Glamour Gloss lasts about an hour longer.

Wearing Sex Pot

GG also feels a little thicker on my lips, and I prefer the light vanilla frosting fragrance to Benefit’s louder fruity scent.

I dig the Benefit packaging more, though. Don’t those tubes look fun (yet still fairly grown up)? I don’t know, but the Glamour Glosses, while cute, still feel a little too Sweet Valley High/tweeny bopper to me…

Wearing Flirt

Packaging matters, and while I’m not too crazy about the outside of these glosses, their insides more than make up for it. Good stuff! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

You might like Too Faced Glamour Gloss if

  • …you like glosses with a sticky texture
  • …you want full color coverage
  • …you don’t mind a tingly, cooling sensation
  • …you can appreciate youthful packaging
  • …you break for brush applicators

Like a virgin: vogue-ing to music that makes people come together

The Glee/Madonna episode airs tonight and I’m *this close* to spontaneously combusting in my chair from excitement. Probably TMI, but I’ve danced along to the Lucky Star video at least three times today. Yes, I still remember all the choreography and, YES, I fell down several times (not on purpose). Tabs keeps staring at me as if to say, “Have you lost your mind?”

Damn, if I could only remember where I put my pair of black fingerless gloves. I wanted to wear ’em tonight.

Anywho, what’s the good word on your end of the computer? 🙂 Anything exciting to report?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

LMAO! I really really don’t understand the rhinestones either… I feel like American brands are starting to try and appeal more to a younger demographic and to a wider demographic (read: Asian countries) and just doing it badly. Many Asian makeup brands routinely have very “cute,” blinged out packaging but for some reason all the Western versions I’ve seen yet just look very tacky… =/ (And the new Coach Poppy collection???? I am sure it will do fantastically in Japan and I think they’re really cute! But I wouldn’t be caught dead carrying one of those hot/baby pink bags here!)

Anyway, the pigmentation on these glosses look amazing!

Me too. Is it just me, or is everything at Sephora looking younger and younger (this coming from a woman who went crazy over Tokidoki, ha ha)?

No I totally agree! I think in the in the last 5 years or so of poorer than expected economic climate it’s true that teens with rich parents are the ones with the most disposable income and companies have really figured that out and changed their marketing strategies accordingly. I think both the Kat von D and Tarina Tarantino lines really reflect this (though I do love products from both and think they have some high quailty hits) and I’ve heard rumors of a Hello Kitty line launching soon? (Part of me really hopes it’s true and part of me really hopes it’s not true LOL.) I think it might also be why Laura Mercier’s been releasing a lot more color than usual – to try to break out of the “office lady” stereotype.

And what about VS Pink?! That’s totally targeted at high schoolers! And I think it’s something that’s fairly recent as far as Victoria’s Secret’s marketing. When I was in high school my mom would have been scandalized at the thought of shopping there for her daughter (though I have to admit she is really quite old-fashioned and I had to fold my granny panties down so they wouldn’t show over my low-rise jeans for basically my entire middle and high school years LMAO!).

I really don’t mind the bejeweled stuff, its the (and I might be showing my age here) Tokidoki stuff I’m not a fan of. The look of it not the product. :0)

I don’t wear plumping glosses to plump my lips because I have naturally full lips but I do really like the tingly and numbing feeling of plumping glosses. Weird, I know :).

Hmm, the colors look pretty, but I am not a fan of sticky lipglosses and I don’t love scented lip products either (unless it’s the MAC vanilla scent). I think I’ll have to pass on these because of stickiness, as well as the Benefit if they smell fruity. Love my Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Make Nice though – it’s the perfect combination of lipstick and lipgloss.

I am ALL OVER Flirt and will be picking one up today, thank you very much! The pigmentation, lack of shimmer and opacity is exactly my cup o’ tea. However, I am deeply saddened by your diss of Hansen. I double-dog dare you to Youtube the “Mmm-bop” video and not smile as you watch those incredible cuties zooming around a parking lot on skateboards, singing the niftiest little pop song evah!

I love Sex Pot on you, it looks very natural but it gives you that extra hoo-zah! Flirt is nice too, but I prefer the 1st.

Hey, Hanson hasn’t disapeared! They have been putting out albums and touring since 1997. Their music has definitely matured, as they have (all 3 are married w/kids) and they are some of the most talented musicians out there. They performed on David Letterman last night and are gearing up for their new album release in June 🙂
Sorry, I get a little bit defensive on the Hanson topic!

Anyways, I’m definitely going to check out the new too faced glosses. I’m not crazy super-sticky glosses but the pigmentation of these appeals to me!
