My friends, we are living in an era of crazy lip colors.
Yes, it’s true. And I love the craziness! — the
greens, blues and other-worldly purples. It’s opening minds — boom! — and more and more makeup mavens are thinking about beauty in unconventional ways.
Still, sometimes I get a hankering for an old-fashioned flattering pink or coral like the ones in the new Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lip line. They’re $14 each and available now.
All five are fabulously wearable and fairly comfortable for a liquid lipstick.
The Pixi MatteLasts have a thin, watery consistency similar to the NARS Powermatte Lip Pigments (which are THE BEST liquid lipsticks out there right now IMO), so you only need a few drops for full coverage. As long as you’re careful to apply the littlest amount, they don’t feel suffocating or heavy, either, like most other liquid lipsticks feel.
The unscented, unflavored formula is also easy to apply quickly, which is fortuitous in this case because, wow! — these dry in less than a minute.
I still prefer my NARS Powermattes, though, because even though the Pixi MatteLasts feel fairly lightweight on my lips, the NARS Powermattes feel even lighter, and they’re much, MUCH more moisturizing.
Despite being a little drying, the MatteLasts are still pretty good, and they cost $12 less than the NARS version.
Speaking of crazy colors…
I like to watch music videos on YouTube while I run on the treadmill, and during a particularly brutal four-miler yesterday, I randomly ended up watching the No Scrubs video by TLC.
Remember this one? It’s either 1999 or 2000.
I hadn’t seen it in years before yesterday, and it occurred to me, while breathlessly panting, that the makeup in it is really forward-thinking. There’s some crazy-@ss lip colors! Blues, greens, black… Makeup colors that you see today walking down the street on a Tuesday, but they weren’t that common back then.
There are also some Instagram-worthy brows and cut creases.
I wish I knew who did the makeup for this video because it was way ahead of its time.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I love No Scrubs! Ah, the good times when this song was released.. I like the shades of the lipsticks but Matte is a no for me going forwards because I have such dry lips. I’m testing the Charlotte Tilbury ones though, made an exception there ?
farah says
What are your fave lippies since you have dry lips?
Eleni says
Hi Farah,
I’ll try all formulas because I love trying new things but having dry lips, I don’t enjoy matte formulations so much. I love moisturising lipsticks or creamy ones, like Charlotte Tilbury’s
KISSING, Bobbi Brown’s Rich Moisture and most Mac non matte formulas work well on me ?. How about you?

I still love that song! Lol that used to be my jam! These lipsticks are really pretty and the quality doesn’t seem too bad either. I’m just stuck on the price tag. $15?! That’s creeping up there to Urban Decay prices!

Out of these shades I only think Evening Rose would suit me. And I think these are quite expensive, given that they are pixi. Is it just me or did they increase their prices over the last year?

Love all the colors, they look so good on you!

I’m definitely OK with mattes, seen from a distance on me, if they’re not drying. I find they make my lips look a little dry and puckered when seen close up (like closer than an arm’s length but not too many people are that up in my space). HAHA!
Karen says
GIRL. The NARS version would be your best bet then. It doesn’t have that dried cat butt effect, LOL!
Kim says
Thank you! I made a note!!

The rose shades look nice to me, but I hear you I need all the moisture I can get. Glad to know the NARS power mattes are not drying.
