And for more heat-less hair styles for the dog days of summer, check out…
Peep these summery wavy-waves, kitty cat! — that is, if you can get past that luscious lip. (It’s Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Mat Lip Crayon in 269 Impact from the fall collection.)
Read on for chill, casual waves that are also chic (at least I think so).
Unlike the waves at Waikiki Beach, where, I kid you not, it takes me 15 minutes to paddle out to the surf lineup with my noodle arms on a massive longboard twice my height, catching these summery waves takes less than five minutes.
And yes, I can feel the extra love ? emanating through the screen from my hair tribe right now. You know who you are! You hit snooze more than a few extra times every morning and always end up with only five minutes to style that mop. I’m here for you, homegirl.
Anywho… Remember yesterday’s braids? Yup, this is the next day ‘do, and like yesterday’s, this one doesn’t require any heat styling. Once again, I used some Oribe faves, including Gold Lust Dry Shampoo (moar magical than Magic Mike, ’cause it completely sucks up all the funk on your scalp without leaving behind any visible residue!) and Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax, a sweet stylin’ spray wax to separate your strands for serious texture (how cool is that?).
Here’s how it works…
1. Shake it out
Since we prepped our braids yesterday for today’s waves (we used a moisturizing hair oil and a flexible hairspray), this first part should be super easy.
Remove your hair elastics, and gently shake out your braid (or braids), releasing them into loose waves with your fingers.
Run your fingers through a few times to separate the strands…
If you actually did this step and took out your braid/s last night, work out any knots with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb this morning. If you didn’t, and you slept with your braids in your hair (which is what I did), I think it’s easier…
2. Revive those roots
Spruce up your second-day roots with a dry shampoo, spritzing in short bursts and concentrating most of the dry shampoo at the crown and around your bangs for lots of lift.
3. Add separation and softness
Work a flexible, texturizing wax through the mid shaft and ends (concentrating on the ends) to define and separate the waves into pieces.
I like Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax because it’s weightless, so my hair retains maximum volume, since I’m all about that big hair life these days, LOL! It’s also soft hold, so I can run my fingers through my strands sans crunchiness.
4. Admire your textured, tousled waves
And that’s it! Waves without any heat styling or real effort, for that matter.

Karen

Love this look! And how it works off of the last look!
I’m someone who unfortunately kind of has to wash my hair every day, so this could work to try to take a break from washing.
Karen says
Thanks, Chelsea! 🙂 I feel ya on needing to wash your hair every day. I need to if I’m working out a lot, so for two-day styles like this one I usually time it on days when I know I’m not going to sweat too much. It helps, LOL!
Chelsea says
Exactly – gotta find the days where you’re not doing too much. I work out most days and have fine hair. I try to coat the ends of my hair in conditioner when I shampoo to protect them.
Karen says
I do the same trick with the conditioner. And sometimes, when I sweat a just a little, I’ll simply rinse my hair out with good old water.
Jane says
I have been meaning to tell you that I love the shorter length of your hair on you. I know it is not PC, but I do think at a certain age, a woman looks better in shorter hair. It also makes it easier when you have babies and toddlers who love to pull on things.
Be well and safe!
Karen says
Thanks, Jane! I’m liking it too. This is the shortest my hair has been in years, and now I’m getting the urge to cut it even more. I’m gonna hold off until next spring, though, because having the extra hair keeps me warm in the fall and winter. LOL! It’s like an extra layer of insulation.
Which reminds me… I’m not ready for fall!

I love the waves! I’m always a fan of curl, especially for me. I do need to be an everyday washer, unfortunately. And I realized I could never get moving in the morning (on early days) without a shower to wake me up. You’re probably the opposite and wind down with a shower, since you are used to taking yours at night. 🙂
Karen says
It’s funny how showers can be so different for people. Like, there’s NO WAY I could get myself in a shower in the morning, not unless I was already warm from working out. Do you take them in the morning even in the winter? I could not do that!
Kim says
I know! Isn’t it funny? It’s like different workout times for people. If I work out in the morning, I’m dead for the rest of the day. I’m so used to doing it at night that my brain automatically thinks “oh, finished working out.. time for bed”. 🙂 Yes, showers every morning for me, regardless of the season. It wakes me up and gets me moving but, again, because I’ve always done it. We would have been good roommates because we’d never need the workout equipment or the shower at the same time. HAHA!
PS One of my kids takes showers to “warm up”. One of my friends, too. That’s something I can’t do. It makes me colder when I get out, all wet. I just need thick socks and a blanket. 🙂
Karen says
We would’ve been awesome roommates! Also, I’m 100% if we lived together between us we’d have at least 3 cats, minimum.
Happy Friday!
Kim says
HAHA! At least 3!! And you’d have had me eating much healthier. I don’t know what I’d have brought, except maybe a lot of writing material for you that started with “omg, my crazy roommate did/said”, etc. 🙂 Have a fab Friday!!
Karen says
And all the cats would be CRAY!!!!
And you’d be eating the vegetarian lasagna I made for dinner out of sheer desperation…
Too funny!
You have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend, too. 🙂
Diana says
Your waves are so California natural! Your hair is so shiny too…
I love the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and Dry Shampoo, use both. I have to daily wash, gives me some oomph when it falls flat. I have bangs so I put a huge roller in, spritz with the Oribe, wait 5 minutes and they fall into place.. I envy 2nd hair day people lol
Karen says
Hi Diana,
I have friends who can do third and fourth day hair! I used to be able to do it when I wasn’t working out as much as I do now. I have to at least rinse my hair out with water, otherwise my scalp feels gross.
Also I’ve never thought of layering a dry shampoo with a texturizing spray! Will try that soon, because I bet you get lots of volume.
Tatiana says
Gorgeous! You, your hair, that lipstick color!
Awww! Tabs!!!! How sweet that you got goodnight kisses from him.
Karen says
Even though he’s super crabby in his senior years, he still loves a bedtime snuggle session. 🙂
Tatiana says
How old is Tabs now? How long have you been on his staff? Hope his is healthy and well. Nora got crabbier and crabbier as she got older, then one day she started getting snugglier and snugglier and then she started getting sick. Sigh. Miss the old girl even though my asthma is starting to get better without her.
Karen says
We thing he’s gotta be at least 12? Maybe even 13 or 14. I wish I knew his exact age and his birthday. When we met him (over 10 years ago) and took him to the vet, he said he was at least 2 or 3.
So, he was pretty chill until the baby came along. Kinda grumpy but he never raised a paw or tried to bite me. Now he has absolutely NO patience for anything. If I even look at him the wrong way the fangs come out! Funny thing he’s super sweet to Connor. He’s never bitten her or swatted her, ever. If she starts getting on his nerves he just walks away!
I’m so sorry about Nora kitty.
Tatiana says
Haha. He’s probably just upset with you that brought an interloper into the household. I bet he was used to being the center of attention. Glad he is so good with Connor!
The other day Dear Daughter told me she was upset because her vet told her she had a geriatric cat. Lol. She still thinks of her cat as a kitten, even though though that kitten will be 11 yrs. old this fall.
Karen says
Aww, senior kitty! I will always think of Tabs as a kitten (even though I technically didn’t meet him until later). He’s slowed down so much within the last few years. It started with little things like whenever I’d come home, he used to bolt down the stairs and then throw himself on the floor and flash his tummy until he got love. Now he just stays wherever he is and keeps napping. And man! All he does is sleep now! The only time I see him is when I’m making lunch at noon.
Fern says
Whatever you’ve got on your face is like whoa. So pretty and fresh and glowy! That red lip is literally the cherry on top! ? ?
