Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red ? lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to ? Valentine’s.
It was good hunting today, and by “hunt,” I’m referring to my trip to HomeGoods, where I went hunting for farmhouse decor for my office…even though I didn’t really find anything farmhouse-related that I liked.
It was still a productive hunt, though! — and I mean “hunt” in the truest sense of the word, because let’s get real, HomeGoods is like The Hunger Games of home decorating stores. If you see something you want, you better chase that down like a lioness chases down her prey.
But ya know, it was Caturday, and even though I was wearing sweats and a messy bun, I still wanted to wear red lips for #14DaysofRavishingRed.
An opaque lipstick seemed like a little too much for today, so I went with one of my favorite casual ways to wear red instead — by layering a red gloss on top of a nude lipstick.
The deep, cool-toned cherry red gloss I’m wearing borders on magenta. It’s Neutrogena Hydro Boost Lip Shine in Deep Cherry, and when it’s layered on top of a creamy nude brown (NUDESTIX Mystic), the brown tones down the intensity of the red, so that you end up with a casual glossy brown lip with a hint of red.
Of course, you can do this with any red gloss — doesn’t have to be a cool-toned cherry red like this.
This version of a red lip is suuuper laid back, so I like to wear it with comparatively chill makeup. I’m not really wearing a lot here at all, just clear brow gel, mascara, a sheer face tint, under-eye concealer and cream blush.
If you’ve never rocked a red lip before, but you want to — you’re just a little nervous to try — this is one way to take ’em for a test drive.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. I ended up getting three denim and paisley Pottery Barn-esque Ralph Lauren throw pillows for the couch. Not farmhouse, but they’re cute. 🙂 I’ll show you some pics soon.

LOVE this way of wearing red lips.
Omg I can’t believe it’s been so many years since I read your blog religiously (you got me started on experimenting with wearing lots of makeup – really helped me when I had to wear a full face of stage-ready makeup in drama school in 2013!).
Will have to read/comment more often again 🙂

Karen, hi! It’s been a while. How are you?! What are you up to these days? I hope everything with you is going well. Can’t wait to catch up!
Karen says
Hiiii 🙂
I know right! I’m well, thanks. Did my MA in musical theatre but not working as an actress anymore. Doing freelance marketing & publicity for authors and publishers, well, trying to build it so that eventually I can go full time. Working on my novel and living in Cardiff, Wales now 🙂
I don’t really have any sheer reds but I LOVE a good red lip. My favourites are probably Box by Illamasqua and I have this Maybelline liquid superstar one that I have to scrub off, very good for events and stuff.
xx

I love a sheer red. I have one from Shiseido from years ago that I probably should have tossed by now (but it doesn’t smell funky, so…), but it’s one of my favorite sheer reds. It’s got brown/brick undertones and it feels dressy and casual at the same time.
I’ve never been to Home Goods. Until I googled them I didn’t even know there were any on the peninsula or in the south bay.

HomeGoods is fun if you’re in the mood for a treasure hunt! It can be a hit or miss depending on what they have in stock, and you have to sift through things to find the good stuff, but when you find something you like it’s a lot of fun. The various stores will have different inventory so you never know what you’ll come across. The one near my house stocks high ender brands, too, like Le Creuset (I saw a small casserole with a lid for 50% off), Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.
You should go sometime soon. Just

Do they ever have area rugs? Looking for a larger one for the family room and a couple of small ones to put by the front and back doors.

I try to avoid Home Goods at all costs. I can always find about 700 things that I want to bring home, though I know I don’t actually need them. There are a few stores where I always find myself impulse shopping and HG is one of them. 🙂 I need to streamline so I just don’t walk in the door anymore. HAHA!

Hello Karen, do you know of a dupe for the Nudestix Mystic? I have the Neutrogena gloss and really like this look but don’t have easy access to Nudestix so am hoping I have a dupe already in my stash.
