Too Faced Shadow Insurance: A Bald Eyebrow’s BFF

August 27th, 2009 by Karen 31 Comments

Believe it or not, there are a few positives to accidentally hacking off your left eyebrow.

Besides discovering the psychological healing power of long bangs, Raul’s provided the opportunity to solve interesting new problems, like figuring out how to hide a partially bald brow while sweating like a pig (no offense, Miss P!).

Yesterday at hip-hop class, aka sweaty Karen central, I discovered a great trick to keeping filled-in brows put with the help of Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17).

Normally, I use this invisible primer to lock eyeshadow down. Before heading to class last night, on a whim I patted some primer directly onto the sparse patch before filling it in with the Clarins Eyebrow Kit Pro Palette.

I figured the worst that could happen would be beads of black sweat streaming down my cheeks (ewww). Fingers crossed and hoping for the best, I went about getting my booty shake on.

You know what? It totally worked. As I Cabbaged Patched and Robo Copped my way through yet another old school routine, the filled-in spot miraculously refused to budge. And even though I was drenched at the end of the 90-minute class, Raul totally stayed on the ‘low. Yes!

While I lurves me some Too Faced Shadow Insurance, I’m guessing any invisible eyeshadow primer could work. A few to consider: Urban Decay Potion Primer ($17), Tarte Lifted Natural Eye Primer ($20) and Benefit F. Y. Eye ($22).

MAC attack!

In two shakes I’m heading over to MAC to check out the new Nail Trend F/W ’09 By Jin Soon collection.

I’ve been testing the polish for durability over the past week, and so far it’s held up really well. Here’s an updated photo of Dance All Night (a creamy brick red):

mac-nail-update

There are a few tiny chips and the shine has faded (I used a base coat and skipped the top coat), but overall I’m happy. Typing all day, washing dishes without gloves, you name it — I really put my nails through the ringer. This new polish formulation definitely stays on much better than the MAC lacquers of yore.

Do you plan on checking out any of these colors? And what’s going on with you this lovely Thursday?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hey Karen,

I checked the polishes out this morning. As a matter of fact I have multi colored nails on my left hand:-D After my swatching and much deliberation, I chose Beyond Jealous, Cool Reserve and Dry Martini.

Now the deliberation is about which color to use first. I’m thinking of Cool Reserve with a top coat of Matte About You:-)

      Hi Tami,

I vote for Cool Reserve. It’s my favorite out of the bunch.

Man, I wish I had thought about this before when I accidentally hacked into Frida a few months ago.

PS Congrats on the link from Sephora’s Beauty and the Blog!

      Hi Hannah,

I hope Frida is back in full force! 🙂

Thanks for letting me know about the Sephora mention. I’ll pop over there and say hi to Jenny.

      Happy Thursday!

LOVE the primer as it has no curvey bits that hide product like udpp!!

      Hi Tali,

Apparently UDPP has a new curved wand to get out the last bits of primer. For the fans I bet it’s a minor miracle.

Wow!! Urban Decay Potion Primer and TFSI, both are cheaper than Benefit F.Y. Eye. Too bad we don’t have Urban Decay and Too Faced here and Benefit F.Y. Eye was just discontinued here. I am currently using Benefit F.Y. Eye.

      Hi Vonvon,

Bummer that F.Y. Eye was discontinued. I used that base for years and remember really liking it.

I apparently missed the blog in which you wrote about your hacked off eyebrow! To satisfy my curiosity, I clicked on your link but it appears to be broken. I guess I’ll backtrack until I find it. 🙂

    hey karen,

LOL @ “bald eyebrow”. I’m glad you found a new trick. I love the too faced primer ; it’s the only one I use.

I have no interest in the Mac polishes. I’ve been too traumatized by the other ones. Plus, the colors don’t grab me. I love the Opi for Sephora polishes and I can pick up similar colors in that brand.

      Hi Shontay,

I hear ya! Before these polishes I wasn’t the biggest fan of their nail stuff.

These new ones definitely seem to last longer. As for the colors — they’re very arty and fall. Dunno if they’re gonna appeal to a lot of folks, but they are interesting.

Ha, I remember my bottle taking forever to finish. Maybe next time you go to Sephora ask for a sample. They’re usually pretty generous about giving them out!

I need to try this to compare to UDPP, which is my holy grail of all makeup products. I just bought F.Y.Eye and was really disappointed, it creased like crazy on me within 4-5 hours 🙁

Ohh! You could always do Cool Reserve on the fingers and Beyond Jealous on the toes.

I have the Too Faced Shadow insurance and I like it a lot. My makeup stays a lot longer on my lids. Actually when I want to use some glitter I have another insurance from Sephora in a little pot.

TFSI is up there with chocolate, The Beatles and my dawgie. The first time I used it, it was love. No more creases, on me, the oily lid queen! It’s sooo worth it!

I was going to pick up Beyond Jealous but I have Sephora OPI’s Dark Room and it is an exact dupe. I might go back and pick up for fun though. Great post on the Shadow Insurance and eye brow filling, I would never have thought to put primer on my brows before filling. I have very sparse and light eyebrows!
