Conversations with my overstuffed makeup bag (Part 1)
ME:
“Hey, do you think I need another highlighter?”
MY OVERSTUFFED MAKEUP BAG:
I mean let’s get real here. Chances are you already have a go-to highlighter (or highlighters, because MOAR SHIMMER), and you’re probably attached to it, but if you, by chance, “need” a new one, or if it’s your life’s mission to become the antithesis of all that is Konmari, then…MAC ATTACK! MAC is adding two new highlighting palettes to their Hyper Real Glow line.
Like the bronze and rose gold palettes in the permanent line now, these new ones look and feel like the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Powders on the skin. They’re super silky, with ultra-fine grains of powder and an opalescent finish you can turn up or tone down, depending on your mood, your tool and your technique.
In fact, I think the MAC Hyper Real Glows actually feel softer than the BECCA powders do, so if you’re a clumsy-pants who drops everything, be careful…because the cardboard packaging feels dainty and delicate.
Both of them would work for a wide range of skin tones, but one of the new palettes is lighter and cooler-toned than the other, with pink, lavender and pale champagne shades, while the other, darker one has a peach and two coppers.
This time of year, my medium tan skin (I wear an NC42 in MAC foundation) is a little lighter than it is in August, and I like using the cooler pinks and purples in Get Lit as traditional highlighters on my upper cheekbones, down the bridge of my nose and in the inner corners of my eyes, along with using the peach palette on my eyes as shadow by buffing the shimmer on my lids and brow bones for an otherworldly glow.
A few more deets…
- Coming February 4, 2019 to the MAC website, and February 7 to MAC stores and select MAC counters (call your counter to check ahead of time).
- The palettes are $39.50 each and come with three 0.15-oz. pans (decent size).
- The Shimmy Peach palette is shinier and frostier than the Get Lip Palette.
- With these, a little goes a long way.
- I get a solid six hours from these powders without seeing any fading.
- You’ll like these if you’re a fan of BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector, or if you like flexible highlighters that can go from subtle to ***BLING***.
- These may not be the best fit for you if you prefer candlelit glows a la the Hourglass Ambients.
I realize that swimsuits are probably the last thing on your mind right now…
Seeing as how 75% of the country recently teleported to Antarctica (!), but we’re heading to Hawaii to see family in a couple days (El Hub’s parents, aunties and cousins live there, and my parents have a timeshare), and I recently got a new one.
It’s a black and white gingham one-piece called the Siren…and it’s kinda retro! It’s from a brand I recently found called Albion Fit. They’re based in Utah and do swimsuits that cover you up but don’t look frumpy. I’m excited about going to the beach and *not* having to worry about Connor pulling off my top, LOL!
I wanted to get Connor a matching gingham suit because Albion Fit also has kids swimwear, but her size was sold out, so I had her choose this mermaid one-piece with a pink tutu from Carters (on sale now, by the way!).
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Oh, that peach one is beautiful! I’ve got the Get It Glowin’ one and it’s freaking gorgeous! I just rediscovered it when I did a declutter and I’ve been using it consistently for a few weeks now.
Both of the bathing suits are adorable and I’m definitely going to check it out for a new suit this year. Connor is going to look adorable!
Karen says
Hi Barb,
Good on you for doing a declutter. Did you just happen watch the Marie Kondo show on Netflix?
I haven’t tried the Albion suit in water yet but so far the fit is fantastic. The material is thick and it kinda sucks you in and holds everything in nicely without feeling binding. I feel snug and secure in it!
Barb says
Karen, no I haven’t. I’ve heard tons about it but haven’t watched it. I’m currently watching the second season of The Punisher and then want to watch the Ted Bundy Tapes and the other documentary about the girl that was abducted. I forget what it’s called.
The suit sounds very promising!
Karen says
My hubs is watching the new season of Punisher too! I see those true crime shows on Netflix all the time but am too scared to watch them. I can’t handle anything too intense these days.
So the Marie Kondo show is strangely compelling (you’d think a show about organizing messy houses wouldn’t be, but it is), and it also has some good tips, too.
Christine Beck-Millan says
Girl, it’s still cold AF here. O_o [okay, mainland folks, I put that in double air quotes.]
BOTH shades of the Hyper Real palettes look terrific on you! My heart still jumps every time I see “hyper real” just hoping/praying/hoping that the foundations return. ;’-(((((
I might be in the market for a lilac-y highlighter. My Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Nectar that I got over 3 years ago is still goin’ strong. Being that the Get Lit looks so fantastic on you, I think my NC44 can take it! 😉
Cara says
LOL – I was gonna say the same; although it’s Hawaii, it’s not exactly swimsuit weather right now – gusty winds, lows in the high 60s to low 70s (depending on location), rain, rain, rain…
Karen says
Hi Cara,
It’s definitely warmer than Northern California at the moment!
Karen says
The other day I FaceTimed my parents and they were both wearing sweaters while sitting outside. Sigh. They’re in Kapolei. Whatever the weather is it’s definitely warmer than Northern California! I’m going to get in the pool no matter what. (And I’m also gonna keep my fingers crossed that there’s at least one good day.)
Kim says
I hope you have a fab time!! I’m glad you found a suit that you like. It seems like a constant search (for me). I end up wearing board shorts and a rash guard shirt over a bikini that’s none too flattering these days! 🙂 Connor’s is super adorable. And I laughed for a good while over the gif for your overstuffed makeup bag. Just funny, all around! 🙂
Kim says
PS I just read your reply about GO FOR THE THROAT and might have snorted. HAHA! I’m with you 100%. There is a big focus on kindness, which is so important, but there’s definitely the balance of not being a doormat. I was the opposite of you. All fierceness as a kid. It took me a long time to be thoughtful enough to be kind and considerate. Hopefully we’ll help our kids to get it right before they reach adulthood. 🙂
Karen says
You’re like my friend Cindy. NOBODY messed or ever messes with her. Funny thing is though she’s a total softie once you remove the tough outer shell. I only know this because every movie I ever watch with her makes her week. She even cried during that movie with Eminem, Eight Mile!
Kim says
I cried during Uncle Buck (when he takes the picture out of the frame and sees that he’s been bent back). Don’t get me started on Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The Hubs can randomly say “I’m an easy target” and I have to leave the room. Cindy and I would be good movie partners – we’d just need a big box of Kleenex. HAHA!
I hope the weather is cooperating!! Accuweather says 72 and partly cloudy. That’s not too bad! 🙂 Fingers crossed for warmer and sunnier!
Karen says
Thank you! The weather is supposed to not be all that great right now (70s and lower 80s with rain and wind), but eh, we’ll do our best. I’m gonna still get in that pool. 🙂
Chelsea says
So jealous about Hawaii! We finally have temps above 0 today here in Michigan, but one of our pipes froze so we’re getting that worked on as I type. Both yours and Connor Claire’s suits are cute!
I’m wanting a new highlighter but I’m looking for a cream or liquid. The peach version of this palette is beautiful though!
Karen says
Thank you! I looked around forever for a swimsuit it seems and I just needed to go ahead and pull the trigger. Glad I found this brand because they have good customer service and the suits are cute without looking too matronly.
So, highlighter. Have you tried the MAC Cream Colour Bases yet? Hush would be great on you.
Savannah says
It was -40 degrees Celcius (with windchill) yesterday, it’s slightly warmer today and tomorrow it’s supposed to warm up to the degree that I don’t always need to wear two pairs of pants ? Layering clothes is actually exhausting! I’m really feeling the Get Lit palette as I’m not really a fan of warm or gold highlighters on my face (I don’t know why that is since I’m yellow in tone and you would think it would be flattering). But do I need another highlighter? Hmm. That is the question, ha ha!
Karen says
Hi Savannah,
I totally get it. I have yellow tones too and I’m picky about which ones I wear, because some of them look weird on me and wash me out.
Hope it’s a little out your way today! How many layers are you wearing?!
