Face of the Day: A Pink and Blue Pastel Eye

March 5th, 2008 by Karen 79 Comments

Girfriend, I’m busy frolicking today, but you know I couldn’t leave you hangin’! Pastels aren’t usually my style, but today the makeup gods chose to bestow enough courage upon me to attempt this pink and blue eye, inspired by Shiseido’s spring makeup look.

Here’s the Shiseido version:
shiseido-spring-look.jpg

And here’s my attempt:
fotd-eye-1.jpg
karen-serious-fotd.jpg
karen-fotd-goofy-face.jpg

Excuse the big hair. It’s looking very ’80s Jersey shore, I know, but when I wear it wavy it has a mind of its own!

To get this look I used…

Lid and crease
– MAC Rollicking Paint Pot
– MAC Parrot eyeshadow

Brow bone and in the crease
– MAC Girl Friendly Paint Pot
– MAC Frisco eyeshadow
– MAC Fafi Quad 1 – Pink Venus eyeshadow

Lower lash line
– MAC Parrot eyeshadow
– MAC Fafi Quad 1 – Hey eyeshadow

Top and bottom lashes
– Shu Uemura Precise Volume Mascara Waterproof in 01 black

Brows
– MAC Concrete eyeshadow

Undereye circles
– Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer in 430
– Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2

Cheeks
– Three Custom Color Specialists Pink Hyacinth Watercolours cream blush
– Barbie Loves MAC Beauty Powder in Pearl Blossom

Lips
– MAC 4N lipstick
– MAC Sugar Trance Lipglass

Face
– Chanel Teint Innocence Naturally Luminous Compact Foundation in 50 Natural
– Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

If ya’ll think I should try a tutorial for this look, please let me know in the comments.

What music have you been listening to lately? I need tunes to help me through my hump day. Right now I’m listening to Lupe Fiasco’s Superstar! I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday and that your pants fit you properly (mine are falling off my bum because I can’t find my favorite belt, oy)!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hey BeautyTalk,

Oh yeah, the LM Secret Brightening Powder is the best thing since sliced bread. I’m glad you like it. And the Dior Concealer too, yay!

If we’ve got the same coloring, then if you’re foundation person you might want to check out Chanel Teint Innocence compact foundation. It’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to my natural skin color. :

    Hi Tricia,

LOL! Your mom is cute! Mine does stuff like that too…

To tell you the truth I am feeling just EHH about Rollicking. I think I got a bad pot (ha ha ha) because the texture is really dry and it applies unevenly, unlike my other Fafi pots. I’m going to exchange it today, I think. It does look good with Parrot though, I must say. I’m hoping that the new one behaves better.

You know, I LOVE MIMI. She’s nuts but I can’t help but love her. I didn’t originally like her new song but after listening to it a few times it’s starting to really move me. Do you have a favorite Mariah song? Mine is Break-Break-Down!

    Hey Karen!

Love the colour! I so wouldnt be brave enough to do green – particularly as my nanna and auntie drummed it into my head as a child that it was unlucky haha!!

I made the find of the century today! I was shopping at a little shopping village which sells last seasons designer clothes super cheap and stumbled across a cosmetic store. I went in more out of curiosity than anything and came across a whole pile of MAC!! Unfortunately most of the things were not really my colour but I did get a couple of MAC loves Barbie eye shadows!! In Magic Dust and Whistle!! Only problem is i dont want to use them and ruin the cute barbie inprint!!

Have you tried the shadows??? Ive not had a chance to try them out yet but thought they would work nicely with Rubinesque paint pot for a nice neutral look for the daytime! any tips for me???

p.s. Fafi came out in the UK today yeyyyy! Im planning a trip to MAC on friday to clear it out 😀

For reasons I will never be able to explain, sadly, I didn’t buy any of the Barbie shadows (BOOOOO). I wish the Beauty Powders were in that stash. Now those are the sh*t.

What brush are you using for your paint pots? I’ve found that synthetic ones make application easier for me 🙂

    Hi Karen,
No they didn’t have any of the beauty powders which was sad because im dying to try them!!!
Im using a pretty rubbish brush at the moment which I bought to make up the money i was spending on a gift card lol! It is by Ruby And Millie (think it may be UK only) it is actually synthetic and although its not a particularly good quality brush it is working really well for me at the moment!
A good friend of mine (the one who is going to do my wedding makeup :p ) is a makeup artist and is waiting for a delivery of some apparently amazing brushes which she swears are 100 times better than any of the MAC or Chanel so im going to wait and have a look at them before I buy a different brush for my paint pots!

    Hey Karen,

I love your interpretation! It’s sassy, fo’ sho! You know, I feel the same way about my Rollickin’ paint pot. It seems a lot drier than the other Fafi ones and I found it hard to blend, but I thought it was just me and was going to try using my fingers to apply. I heart the lip combo a lot!

Okay, call me kinda crazy, but I’ve a couple of Guns n Roses and Poison songs stuck on my mind lately – right now “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” is in heavy rotation in my head. I need some ideas to get it out! 😉

Speaking of pants falling of “your bum”… how’s the exercise and eating right thing going? I keep meaning to ask you and to check up. I haven’t behaved well lately in this area… until my husband proudly proclaimed his recent weight loss and I sadly realized I weigh 2 pounds more than him!!! AHHH.

So, the last few days have been better in the eating/working out department. Now I have the push I need to get my butt of the couch and get on the elliptical trainer.

    Hi Tuprnut,

Get on that elliptical, girlfriend! I love that machine. If I really concentrate I can get profoundly sweaty when I’m elliptical-ing away! Plus it doesn’t hurt your knees.

The eating part has been pretty good. My weakness for sweets has nabbed me here and there, I can’t lie. Somehow I managed to lose a few pounds, but I think it’s mostly stress-related weight loss…hence, me needing my favorite belt to keep my pants up, blah.

I’ve been working on the strength training and the cardio with vigor lately! And it’s making me feel great.

    What/when are your next workouts?

    Karen,

I feel you on the sweets! I made cupcakes last week and let’s just say I “taste tested” about half the batch. So, no more baking for me for a while.

“What/when are your next workouts?” – I love my elliptical and it gets my butt in shape quicker than anything I’ve done before. I get immediate results which I love. I also do some free weights and once the weather warms up, I’ll walk with a neighbor at a nearby park – it’s a 3 mile loop. At this point, I try to hop on the elliptical when my daughter goes down for her nap everyday. It gives me the alone time I love and I can catch-up on my soap in the meantime.

    Keep it up, girl!

Nice! Now I know a new way to wear blue. Thanks Karen! You are uber patient to put on so may different colors on your lids. I just stick to 2, 3 (or maybe 4 when I feel like) colors at a time. I like to keep my makeup as simple as possible. But somehow regardless of how much eye makeup I put on, I still feel like I have too much. But when I tone it down, it looks like I have nothing on.

I’ll try this look on Friday. I think I have the key players, the rest I’ll wing 😀

Please fight the urge to sing the George Strait:) I must agree that my rollickin goes on kinda funny too- it’s like there is always a gap when u put it on and you have to go back and cover that part. I have other p.pots and they don’t have this problem..I wonder if it would make a difference if I did exchange it…mmm

Aaaahh! Got to bed early last night and I feel great! 😀

I did check out the Shiseido colors. Sadly, the pink was so sheer, I felt like I couldn’t even see it, but I really fell in love with the gold! I’m always looking for a wearable gold (can’t go too yellow) and this one is sheer and lovely, but not too sheer! It looks like it would make a great highlight color or a wonderful wash to the lid paired with a pop of teal or aqua in the outer corners (one of my fave late spring/summer looks)! So I’m almost certain to cave on that!

I’m on a very strict budget this month ’cause I bought a new bokken for aikido, but I’m almost sure to get the Shu eye pencil in the plum and the Shiseido gold. Then I’m trying to save just enough to be able to get the pink Heatherette palette… looks niiiice!

Kind of sappy but I followed Perez Hilton’s lead this morning and downloaded ‘She’s like the wind’ from itunes to show support for Patrick Swayze. Then I remembered how much I loved the movie (and come on, who didn’t??) and ended up buying the album!

    Hi Tuprnut,

Yah, I have a weakness for taste testing brownies, ice cream, candy…I let myself have bits and bites here and there because I don’t know if I could give up sweets entirely and still keep my sanity!

I can’t wait for warm weather to do outdoor stuff too. That’s great you have your neighbor as your workout buddy!

What soap do you watch? I loved Days of Our Lives back in the day. I haven’t watched it in years but once in a while I’ll pop by a show and be like, “OMG – he’s back from the dead after being struck by lightening for the 12th time!”

One thing I like to do on the elliptical are “sprints”, where I’ll turn up the resistance and go all out for a minute (or until my legs start burning or I’m panting), and then alternate that with 3 minutes of recovery. Gets me sweaty every time!

You keep it up too! We can do it!

    Hi Dao,

LOL, I dunno how I end up putting some many colors on! I just kinda grab what I see and go from there, I guess! One thing I’ve noticed about putting a ton of makeup on and not having it show up is that lighting makes a huge difference. If I apply colors in my bathroom it reads different than in natural light (most of the time it will look heavier in the bathroom).

I hope you rock this on Friday. Let me know how it turns out. 🙂

Oh, I love that song “Low”, too. The only thing is that after I hear it once it gets stuck in my head for the entire day, so for the rest of my day I end up thinking, “Those baggy sweat pants and the Reeboks with the straps…with the straps!” LOL!

    Hi Lilan,

Yeah, Bon Jovi does have a few hits from back in the day. I view him a little differently now, ever since I saw him on Oprah a few months ago. He seemed a little full of himself, smugly talking about how his songs were revolutionary, works of art, blah blah blah. I kept thinking, dude…you ain’t the Beatles. It was the 80s and you were in a hair band.

Anyway, I’d love to do a tutorial for this…I think I’ll try my hand at Rollickin’ with some warmed fingers and see how it goes.

I guess the Rollickin’ issue is a wide spread phenomena. I’m going to try applying it with warm fingers to see if that makes application smoother. I’ve never, ever had the problem either with other Paint Pots. I suspect it has something to do with the shimmer in this particular color.

    Hi Glosslizard,

I kinda liked the sheer pink, especially the subtle sparkles. I might get it just so I can use it as a light eyelid wash on lazy days. The gold is very pretty, I agree! I kinda forsee myself going there for one color and then “accidentally” buying, um, more then one. LOL!

How fun! I didn’t know turning 21 was a big deal across the pond like it is here in the US. Ya’ll will have a wonderful night out. Don’t go crazy now…j/k!

You go with your studying! You just have to hold on for two more weeks. And slowly but surely you’ll get those essays done, one at a time. You will definitely have to reward yourself with a righteous makeup haul when it’s all over. 🙂

    Hi Tuprnut,

Oh yah! I watched bits of AMC for a spell in college because one of my roomies was into it. She watched Days of Our Lives with me, so when we could we’d schedule our classes so that we could watch it together. Ahhh, the days before Tivo!

Isn’t it funny how you can go on for a long period of time not watching it and then just pick up the story line again? What cracks me up is when they introduce kids as babies, and then two years later they’re teenagers.

    Hi Megan,

I love that movie too, and I knew most of the lines. My favorite: “Nobody puts Baby in the corner!”

    Hi Karen,

Yeah its weird for us turning 18 and 21 are really big deals but turning 16 is just like a normal birthday! I taught kids to horse ride over the summer at a summer camp and they just couldn’t believe that we didnt celebrate 16th birthdays in a big way! They thought I was a deprived child because I couldnt even remember what I did for my 16th birthday haha!

Trust me once 3rd June comes around I will be making the shopping trip of a lifetime! every shoe shop and makeup counter in the UK better look out!

Oooh yah, 16 is a big deal here for teenagers because that’s when you get to drive. (Although I didn’t start till I was 20).

That’s so cool that you teach kids how to ride horses! Do you own any horses? I love horses, but I’ve never ridden one in my entire life (boo.) I’ve had lifelong dream to own a horse, but when you live in the city and the burbs there aren’t many opportunities to hang out with ’em. A funny story: when El Hub and I first started dating, he started a new job. One day he met one of his older, seasoned co-workers, and the first thing the guy said to him after he introduced himself was, “NEVER buy your girlfriend a horse.” HA HA HA! What a weirdo.

    Hi Karen,

That may be why its no big deal to us then, because kids cant drive here until they are 17!

I used to have ponies when I was younger but I dont have the time to look after a horse anymore unfortunately 🙁 I do go riding every so often still but just for fun I never compete or anything anymore! I love being around horses though they are so calm and relaxing its a great stress buster! Although when you put 20 kids into the mix the stress levels become a hell of a lot higher!!

I imagine he said that to your husband because they are sooo expensive to keep lol my aunt has horses and my uncle always says he would be a rich man if the horses didnt eat everything he earned!

I tell you what, when I come to s.f. to buy my wedding dress you can show me the sights and I will teach you to ride :p

    Hi Holly,

You’ve got a deal! I am afraid of lots of things – dentists, earthworms, white kidnapping vans – but I am not afraid of animals or heights so I think that I would be pretty darn good at horseback riding! Sweet!

LOL, I think that is the reason why that guy brought up the horse thing. Now every time I mention wanting a horse El Hub asks me annoying questions like, “So where does one get all this money to feed this dream horse?” and “Where does the dream horse live? Because he can’t stay in our apartment!” and “Who’s going to clean up all the dreamy horse poop?”

That’s so cool that you rode horses competitively when you were younger! I would totally trade in years of playing classical piano for that in a heartbeat.

    Megan,

So, I got home from work about an hour ago and checked my iTunes to see if I had the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. I swear I thought I had it on there but I didn’t, so I just downloaded it. I may have to rent the movie tonight!

So pretty! I love Rollickin’ with Parrot. I actually tried it with Shimmermoss instead, but I know that with Parrot it would look amazing you and just proved it!

My hair is naturally wavy and I wish it laid like yours in this picture. My ends need some love because they are scared as eff! ‘Scuse my language but it’s THAT dreadful, lol.

Karen, I had a good Thursday – lots of work! But I did change my face routine, I had no make-up yday to give it a breather. But I did load on much more today since I’m going out with some girls from work! I find that I tend to wear more make-up and pay more attention to it when I am with girls, rather than when I’m with the hub!

    Hi Mrs. Lynne,

I sooo feel your wavy hair pain. The only reason why mine is semi-behaved is because my stylist kicks mega-ass. Next time you stop by the bay let me know and I’ll give you her number. She works wonders with wavy/curly hair. I dunno what I’d do without her. Do you ever wear your hair wavy, BTW? I’m so used to seeing you with straight hair, so I have a hard time envisioning you with wavs.

Actually, my hair IS like yours in your serious face picture, curl and volume. I have kink strands so my ends look fried. Yours I can tell is actual straight strands with wave, like my Hubbos. I totally wish I had straight strands. But I think it’s also because I was straightening my hair EVERYDAY for a good few years. I’ve taken an oath with myself to let my hair be for the past 6 months now (no dying, no straightening) to see what my roots are and so far, they are lying flat. I used to have stick straight strands as a wee girl so I’m hoping there’s still some left.

I will be going to get a cut in a couple of weeks (finally!!) since Hubbo will be on vaca so I’m excited to give my locks another chance. Wee!

after using the dior concelor for a while, how do you find it? i used to love the LM secret concelor for my undereye circles but it’s just not working anymore. i need a new one!!

    Hi Evo,

Oh, boys are funny. It seems like they like the “no makeup look” for the most part, but don’t realize that there’s actual makeup involved to get there, LOL. I’m sure you looked super cute!

I really love the Dior now. At first I had mixed feelings about it, but after playing with it and finally figuring out how to use it I fell in love. It looks great both in pictures and in real life if used properly. I dunno how much longer I’ll be able to use it though, because I’ll probably get a bit more tan as we move into spring and summer, and Dior has limited shades, boo.

I tried LM Secret Concealer once – that’s the cream one in the pan, with two colors, yah?

i’ll have to try the dior concealer out when i’m in vegas this weekend.

nope, the LM secret concealer is the cream one in a pot.

Heck ya they are! El hub won’t say a thing if I’m wearing green or purple but blue always makes him give me a second look (not in a good way).

Hot! There’s a Dior store in Ceasar’s. It’s small but there are a ton of products and the staff is helpful if you ask them for recommendations.

Ahhh, I was thinking of the LM Secret Camo! I haven’t tried the one in the pot. Have you heard of Amazing Cosmetics Concealer? They sell it at Sephora, and one small tube is $40 (sheesh!). I’ve never tried it before but I have a friend that swears by it.

    Hi Karen,

Love the look and I like the big hair! I am a big hair kinda gal (well I like a “bump” in the back for volume). Ok so I am listening to a huge assortment of random stuff because I recently downloaded music from iTunes. Here’s a sample:

In a Big Country by Big Country
Family Man by Hall & Oates
You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive
The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground (I know you know that one being a Bay Area girl!)
Prepare for the Fight by The Lovemakers
    Lazy Eye by Silverspun Pickups
    Tainted Love by Soft Cell
You, Me & the Bourgeoisie by The Submarines
    Mr. Roboto by Styx
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club

See a totally WEIRD assortment of songs I love!

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
