10 Ways to Work MAC Fix+

January 16th, 2018 by Karen 23 Comments

mac prep prime fix
There are three new scented MAC Fix+ (plusses?) in the permanent collection now. Say hi to Rose, Lavender and Coconut ($26 each).

There are so many ways to use Fix+ (officially, MAC Prep + Prime Fix+) beyond the standard makeup setting spray procedure.

I love Fix+ and use it daily to prep my skin, and I’m so into it that I even bring a mini bottle with me when I travel.

MAC recently added three new Fix+ “flavors”…

OK, they aren’t really flavors. Just different scents with the same Fix+ formula as the original, which is still my favorite, BTW (has a white floral/green tea scent). Now there’s also Coconut, Lavender and Rose.

Spraying Coconut ? on my face right now…

Ah… I love it.

I don’t know if you’ve ever used Fix+ before, but if you haven’t, give it a try. It’s weirdly much better than water, and it doesn’t leave splotches. You can use it as a setting spray or as a moisturizing skin prep spray to wet your skin before doing your skin care, but those aren’t even half the things it’s good for.

Here are 10 more ways to work MAC Fix+…

1. You can spray it on your hair!

Yes, that’s right. You can spray it on wet hair to loosen tight knots. Or, if you have naturally curly hair, spray it on your hair while it’s wet or dry to kick up your curls.

2. As a body moisturizer/refreshing body spray

You can also use Fix+ on your bod. Store it in the fridge, then spray it all over your arms, torso and legs for a cool, light, refreshing layer of moisture.

3. Intensify your brows

For an intense brow look, load an angled brush with your favorite brow powder, and then spray it with Fix+. Apply that directly to your brows and watch out!

4. Conversely, use Fix+ to mellow out an overly intense brow application

If you accidentally apply too much brow pencil and make your brows too dark, dampen a spoolie with Fix+, and run it through your brows to take down the intensity a few notches.

When you’re trying to look cute while spraying Fix+ and are totally NOT successful, LOL!

5. Transform a liquid lipstick into a cream eyeshadow

This one’s for the girls/guys who like to improvise (and if you’re a strictly by-the-books makeup person, then you might want to shy away from this one). You can transform a liquid lipstick into a cream eyeshadow by mixing in a little Fix+.

Swipe some lipstick on the back of your hand, then spray it with Fix+ and mix it into the lipstick. Then, apply that on your lids with your fingers or a brush.

6. Resurrect dry cream shadows or liners

Revive cream liners and shadows with a few spritzes of Fix+ sprayed directly into the pots. Then mix with a brush and apply to your lids.

7. Fake a flawless complexion with Fix+ and a beautyblender

To add another layer of moisture to your skin and to thin out your foundation or concealer ever so slightly, and thereby make blending easier and your look even more flawless (flawless-er?), dampen your favorite beautyblender with Fix+ before blending.

8. Erase makeup mistakes

Soak a Q-tip with Fix+ (I like the Precision Tips with the pointy ends), and use it to correct and clean up wonky eyeliner edges.

9. Transform your foundation brush into an improv beautyblender

If you can’t keep a beautyblender alive for more than five minutes because your cat/child/cat-child is forever stealing them, hiding them or destroying them, you can turn your favorite kabuki brush into an improv beautyblender.

Just douse the bristles (ideally, synthetic) with Fix+, and use the brush head to blend your foundation.

10. Sheer out liquid face products

Embrace the no-makeup makeup look by spraying and blending Fix+ into your favorite tinted moisturizer, concealer or foundation to sheer them out.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Wow, thank you for that, Karen! Time to drag out my sad half-empty bottle of Fix+ from its space right in the back of my makeup drawer. I once was super into it, and then, I somehow wasn’t any more, and kind of forgot it?
Will try 2, 4, 5 and 7 for sure! I used to love it to foil eyeshadows and pigments… I should really do that again.

      Hi Dorit,

Yeah, it’s great as a mixing medium for pigments. That’s one of my fave ways to work it!

Happy Wednesday! What are you up to today?

You’re a mind reader!! If it wasn’t a snowstorm here I’d be hustling it to go buy a bottle today! Thank you! Hi to Tabs?

      Hi Jade,

I just gave him a cheek scratch for you, although he’s in a little bit of trouble. I came downstairs this morning and he threw up all over the new couch. 🙁 It was a juicy one, too. Thank goodness for washable slipcovers!

I just picked up some cat puke yesterday! I’m not sure why they gravitate toward anything carpet/fabric. To me it seems like just another reminder that they own us not the other way around.

Yeah, why can’t they just throw up grass on pre-approved easy to clean surfaces, like the tile, all the time? This was a surprise because he had never thrown up on our old couch, which he destroyed in an infinite amount of other ways.

How many cats do you live with? Tabs is my only kitty baby.

I’ve got two furbabies. They’re siblings and when I adopted them I thought I should get two since I’m at work all day. I couldn’t even pet them when I visited them at the foster home because they were so scared but now they’re little loveballs! I’m pretty sure they’re turning into the most spoiled neediest cats in the world. But I can’t help it??‍♀️. How did you manage to adopt Tabs from the street?

These are great tips. Thank you! I love that it’s a versatile product. The coconut scent sounds great! Maybe I can trick myself into thinking I’m hanging out on a tropical island. 🙂

It’s smells so good. Just light and refreshing and delicious! 🙂 How are you doing today? Did you do anything over the long weekend?

Hi! I’m doing well. I think I’m finally getting over that cold/flu that attacked me over the holidays. I pretty much hibernated the whole weekend because it snowed again 🙂 My mom is a teacher and she’s loving it b/c of snow days!

How was your weekend? Has the rain finally let up? Hopefully everyone in the family is healthy now!

Oh how cozy! Did you get in any reading during your hibernation period?

I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better!

So the rain has chilled out but it’s still overcast and kinda chilly. I don’t mind so much because at least the air doesn’t feel DRY, ya know? We’re all on our way to getting better, although I’m still sniffling my way through the days, so no lipgloss for me.

Reading, yes! I read a book called Sourdough. It was fun and different from stuff usually read, like mysteries and suspense.

Ugh, the dry air is just murder on my skin. I’ve been drinking tons of water and moisturizing to compensate.

Glad everyone is on the mend!

P.S. Does Tabs ever carry toys around the house? Sometimes in the morning, I notice that Louis has carried upstairs this mouse toy and leaves it in the bedroom. I wish I could see him carrying it up the stairs. It must be so cute!

            January 17th, 2018 at 2:13 pm

The name of that book is too cute. Was it good?

I’ve had bread on my mind lately because of The Great British Baking Show, and I actually just got a new bread loaf and a kneading pin. El Hub bought them both because he’s all for me making homemade bread, LOL! I’m a little intimidated by it, but I’m going to try. Remember the lemon squares I was supposed to make? I ended up using all the lemons in tea for my cough. 🙁 But those will be made when I can taste things again, mark my words!

Also re: books. I grabbed China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan. I’ve been wanting to read his book, Crazy Rich Asians, forever, but it’s always checked out, so I just picked this up instead. It’s supposed to be a sequel but I’m going to try reading it anyway, LOL! If I get too lost then I’ll just wait until I can finish the first book.

Tabs carries everything around the house. Toys, ribbons, food (!). I’m waiting for the day I find bacon in the upstairs bathroom.

Sourdough is about baking, so definitely give it a read! There’s some science-y stuff in it that I didn’t fully get, but I enjoyed it.

I’ve tried baking bread in the past, but never got into it. I’m a little intimidated by yeast. Check out the blog Mel’s Kitchen Cafe for some beginner bread recipes and tutorials.

None of the other kitties carry stuff around, but I love that Louis does it. That would be hilarious if Tabs managed to sneak bacon upstairs!

            January 17th, 2018 at 8:11 pm

OK, so I’m not the only one… Yeast freaks me out too! Bread seems REALLY difficult. But I would love to be able to make homemade ciabatta, french bread and honey whole wheat, so I’m setting my sights on those three for now.

You know what really seems hard? Puff pastry and croissants.

And thanks for the Mel’s Kitchen Cafe recommendation. I love her site; now I have another reason to love it. BREAD!

Ya know, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were random pieces of food in hidden corners of this house. He was in trouble this morning, by the way, because he threw up ALL OVER THE NEW COUCH. And it was juicy. Thank goodness for washable slipcovers.

Oh cat puke. I came home once and found someone had puked on the windowsill and down the wall.

I’m going to live vicariously through your bread making! I’m not quite ready to tackle it again.

          • Karen says

            January 17th, 2018 at 8:20 pm

The weird thing is he NEVER puked on the old couch. I mean, he destroyed it in many other ways, for sure. But he never thought to puke on it, LOL! Thank goodness because it wasn’t easy to clean at all.

Have you ever gotten out of bed and stepped in cat puke? Good times!

      Hi Sheena,

The great thing about it is that it works in so many different ways. Also… When the baby gets older and starts going to kid things and you catch the inevitable train of viruses, you can also spray it on your face to prevent the skin around your nose and mouth from drying out. LOL! That’s what I’ve been using it for mostly lately. Darn this cold, it’s kicking my butt! Are you feeling better? Or are you still under the weather?

HAH how timely then because my nose is a train wreck right now. I’m still sick too! Boo! Baby had her first fever last night so that was fun. NOT. I have one of those forehead scanner thermometer thingies and I swear I was scanning her head every 10 minutes until her fever broke in the wee hours of the morning. I also may or may not have scanned my dog a couple times too. Maybe. Hehe. Crazy dog mom here.

Hi Karen, I’ve eyed this stuff for awhile. Thanks for the review and tips! I know MAC isn’t a natural brand, but are the ingredient in Fix+ anywhere near natural…ish?

      Hi Amy,

      Here’s the ingredient list:

Water / Aqua / Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caffeine, Panthenol, Arginine, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PPG-26-Buteth-26, Fragrance (Parfum), Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol.

As you can see there’s some plant extracts listed decently high up on the list.

I can totally recommend Sourdough as well! (The book, not the type of bread – although… that’s pretty tasty as well!) It’s set in the Bay Area, and made me want to visit SF again!
