How do I love Lisa Eldridge? Let me count the ways…
-
First, I’ve learned so, so much from her about makeup. Plus, she always does her own thing, and I’m so glad to see someone out there who brings it without doing makeup that isn’t your typical Instagram/YouTube/beat-to-the-gods look…not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just SO MANY PEOPLE do it, and at a certain point, everyone starts to look the same.
Sorry, tangent.
- Second, she’s a total cat lady! I love it when her kitty cats ? show up in her videos.
- Third, and I know this is gonna sound so weird, buuuuut when I can’t sleep because I have insomnia in the wee hours of the morning (like I did last night!), I’ll fire up a Lisa Eldridge video on my phone, put on my headphones, and listen to her soothing voice talk about makeup. POOF! — I fall right back to sleep…
Last night I spent a couple hours awake in bed obsessing about relatives coming to stay for two weeks and how I haven’t had enough time to clean the house before their arrival, and at some point between trying to work out when I’ll be able to scrub the guest toilet, and finding a space for the Ninja Blender Box that’s been sitting on the dining room table for months, I turned on Lisa’s video about under-eye concealer, and sure enough, I’d drifted off to dreamland within a couple minutes.
Her voice is so soothing, and I adore her British accent and the fact that she’s talking about a subject I love. It feels like I have this magical British makeup nanny sitting next to me, and she’s stroking my hair ever so gently and talking to me about eyeshadow and skincare in a soothing, sweet voice until I fall asleep…
I’ve also fallen asleep to this one.
Lisa Eldridge…YOU DA BEST. You really are. You put me to sleep, but I mean that in a complimentary way. ? You send me off to the Land of Good Makeup Dreams when I can’t sleep at night, and it’s much appreciated!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Your blog today is so to the point. I have been watching Lisa Eldridge’s videos for years and while I don’t try many of her looks, I have always found her voice so calming. I also loved her videos with Chanel from years ago and still watch them from time to time.
Karen says
Yeah, I love her old school Chanel videos. Have you had a chance to read her book yet? I still need to pick it up.
Beth says
I feel the same way about Emily Noel! I specifically save the best for last when nodding off.:)

2 weeks?! I’d be freaking out if I had family staying with me that long too! Also it’s funny how I can be consumed by obsessing about something (like cleaning before a party) but not enough to actually do something about it! Lol!

Girl I’m having a low-key nervous breakdown. I work from home so I have NO IDEA how I’m going to get anything done. Plus what am I going to feed people for 14 days straight?

I’ve watched Lisa’s videos off and on for years. As the years roll by, we age, our needs change, our esthetic values change, and most certainly products and trends change. I found some of her tutorials illuminating when it comes to adapting new techniques and products so that my makeup look remains current. Nothing says “old lady” quite like sticking with a makeup look that is from a bygone era! I have no desire to recapture my youth, but I do want to look healthy, vital, and relevant. As for many of Lisa’s more dramatic editorial tutorials, although I’d never wear my makeup that way, I do enjoy her skill, artistry, and creativity.
BTW, I’m in my seventies and a firm believer in multi-generational interaction as I go about my day. Good tutorials can help keep me up with the times so I look more relevant and approachable to people of all ages.

I am turning 60 next year and although I feel most of the beauty videos are made by younger gals, I love to see what they do and their level of skills. Half the stuff, I don’t bother with. I do agree that you need to adapt your routine to your skin changes and lifestyle, but I do love watching a full-on glitter look even though I know there is no way I’m doing that.
Eileen says
I love seeing what the young beauties are up to as well even though I would eschew their bolder, more dramatic looks in favor of something more refined and elegant. I do have a weakness, though, for a bit of ultra fine glitter. Today I’m wearing Tom Ford’s Disco Dust with just a hint of his fairy dust lightly patted on my eyelids. It creates a lovely yet discreet now you see it; now you don’t sparkle. A girl’s got to have some fun! ?

I adore Lisa and my chunky ring obsession grew bigger each time I watched her tutorials. I often referred to her videos when it came time to do wedding makeup or when I just wanted to switch up my routine. She is an endless beauty resource and I agree, I love that she doesn’t to typical IG looks. Because frankly, I am tired of seeing it and yes, it makes everyone look the same. Also, it may look great on film and filterized (or you work at Sephora/MAC) but IRL it is very heavy handed and scary.
I need to watch more!

Yes, yes, yeeeezz! Agree with all what you say! Lisa Eldridge’s videos were such gamechangers for me back in those days when all the makeup videos were like “apply purple on the crease and then green on lower lashline”. I found some of her videos and I watched them literally like???obsessed… I actually started to perceive the makeup differently: I learned how to find cheap treasures in drugstore, how to look fresh and healthy when you don’t feel so, how to get the best out of your makeup, how “little goes a long way”, the timeless “the best of you” makeup, and … and… and…
Honestly! I also got introduced to Charlotte Tilbury (remember – video on Kate Moss red lip makeup from Vougue cover) and Mary Greenwell from her videos. When CT launched her makeup, my first thought was “that’s the one from Lisa’s video” So Charlotte – share your MBE with Lisa, please?
Also, besides the obsession with makeup, she’s also a cat-person and she’s been into single mom’s shoes, just like me!
Have you red the “Face paint” book? You have to have it!!

I absolutely love Lisa Eldridge! She’s one of the first professional makeup artists I started to watch when I discovered YouTube years ago. I agree, her voice is so calming & soothing and I love some of her longer videos for that same purpose. Have you ever seen the video she did years ago about picking the right makeup to meet your ex?? It was so good!

Lisa is the BEST! Love her good taste in makeup and all the rest. Love that she is different from that Instagram trend. That will disappear and she will remain. She gives excelent advice for makeup and beauty addicts. Love that she took the time to reply to me on Instagram after I followed her advice.
Love you also Karen!
Alison says
I may be weird too, but Lisa’s voice has soothed me to sleep more than once so you’re not the only one!
Tatiana says
Lisa is such a class act. She’s always so positive and encouraging. She’s so gracious and I don’t think I’ve ever heard an impolite, rude or crude word on any of her videos. I love when she uses models because she always has such a lovely, sweet chat with them while applying their makeup.
Jan Kelley says
Karen, I once a professor that said this about house work. She’s has yet gone to a funeral where people said, “what a shame. She was such a wonderful housekeeper. You could eat off her floors.”
Relax, enjoy your company. Just be kind and loving. No one will notice or care about some dust.

I’d be in a complete meltdown if I had relatives staying with me for two weeks. Good luck with everything!
I love Lisa Eldridge. Her style is not my own, but her techniques and talent are solid gold. I love when she does vintage looks and shares pieces from her vintage makeup collection.
Linda Libra Loca says
She really is the best, although I doubt that if I had relatives coming over to stay for two weeks anything would be able to soothe me!
Chelsea says
I love Lisa. Soothing, positive, gives you things you can use in your everyday makeup routine. I get annoyed with YouTube folks who can only do one style of makeup and only on themselves.
And yes to her kitties! They’re so good.
Lorraine says
YES to this. I love that Lisa uses a variety of models, different age groups, bone structure, skin tones and types. they aren’t all models in real life, many are regular folk.
Chelsea says
Exactly! I also love how she often gives alternatives for products and only uses products she genuinely likes.
Lorraine says
I have never fallen asleep to a Lisa Eldridge video but I have watched some on repeat. I love her voice, and her pronunciations of all the French names of Chanel and Lancome products are spot on. Plus something about the way she says “socket line” gets me every time!
Lisa is SOOOO good, I always go back to her videos. It’s great that she gets inspiration from unexpected sources. My favorite is her break up makeup video called Meeting the EX Makeup Therapy. It’s inspiring, feminist and empowering. a Must See!

Hi Sami,
Yeah, I saw that in the news! I’m excited about it!

Hers was the first beauty Youtube video I watched and it’s been down a rabbit hole (in a good way) since then. 2 wks! Man, that’s a long time! I had a house guest for 5 days, and although she was low maintenance it was more than enough time for my introverted self. Good luck!
P.s. Costco premade food is good for feeding guests. The kale salad with Rotisserie chicken, Costco pizza, chicken pot pie, frozen orange chicken are good options
Karen says
Hi Kate,
Oh, thank you for the Costco recommendations! Thankfully I live 10 minutes away from one. If I can get there early in the morning it’s almost a pleasant experience Sunday afternoon is another story, because I become a THUG in the Costco parking lot, ha ha ha! Where do you usually get the kale salad? Is it like a pre-made kit?
Kate says
Karen, the kale salad is usually in the fridge area with the rest of the produce. It’s actually bagged kale, broccoli and sprouts salad with cranberries and pumpkin seeds. I cut up the rotisserie chicken to go with it. Also, you can buy the square ciabatta like bread rolls in the bakery section to make chicken sandwiches with said rotisserie. If your guests are Filipino, the pineapple sausage and teriyaki meatballs go well with rice and fried eggs. (My relatives love it!)
Marina (Makeup4all) says
Hi Karen,
Long time no speak. How are you? Have you seen that she brought out three red lipsticks? x
