What’s Your Routine for Washing Your Face?

April 19th, 2019 by Karen 16 Comments

Oh hai, bare skin!

Your morning routine? Your evening routine? Whatever you feel like sharing. What’s your routine for washing your face? Do you use micellar water? Makeup wipes? Do you use a washcloth? I know everybody does it a little differently.

For me, in the morning, I wash my face right after I wake up, and how I do it depends on how my skin feels. I’ve been using a retinol at night (Kate Somerville’s), and I’m trying to ramp up to using it three nights a week (Slowly… It’s taking forever because my skin’s just freaking out left and right), but if my face isn’t feeling too dry or sensitive in the morning, I’ll use Clinique’s creamy cleanser — the one in the green tube (sorry, I’m blanking on the name right now). I’ll massage that on to my dry skin, then take a warm, clean washcloth and use that to wipe it away.

Then, I’ll turn the water so it’s ice cold and splash my face a few times, because that really helps me wake me.

And then on the mornings when my skin feels super dry and tight or otherwise uncomfortable, I’ll splash my face with lukewarm water and gently blot it dry with a towel.

In the evenings, I like to do a double cleanse, so I like to start by removing my makeup with an oil cleanser (DHC and Fresh are my favorites), which I massage on to my face. No water. Just two pumps of the oil, massage it in, and let it break up whatever it can break up. Then I rinse off whatever I can with warm water.

Next, while my face is still wet, I’ll grab a face cleanser (either the same Clinique one I use in the morning, or this gel cleanser by H2O Plus, which I like to use when I’ve been sweating a lot or wearing more makeup than usual because it’s a stronger cleanser than the Clinique one, and my face feels very clean after I use it). Then, I’ll wet another clean wash cloth with warm water and use it to remove whatever remains on my face, before splashing again with water.

We go through a LOT of washcloths in our house, LOL!

Let me know what your routine is for washing your face, girl!

Like with makeup, I always like options, so I vary my routine, but not by a lot.
Most nights I cleanse with Josie Maran’s oil and use Neutrogena oil-free makeup remover for my eye makeup.
A couple of times a week I use Lush’s Salt Scrub instead to give my skin more exfoliating.
Sometimes I use Garneier’s cleansing water.
In the morning, I rinse my face with water then use Clinique toner rubbed over my face with a cotton ball.
My skin is less dry than it used to be, but it’s definitely not oily.

I double cleanse in the evenings and just use water and a washcloth in the mornings. I use Kose Speedy Oil for the first cleanse and Cerave or Cetaphil foaming cleanser for the second cleanse. I also use Paula’s Choice 2% BHA and my eye cream (currently Paula’s Choice Ceramide) after cleansing, and I think the BHA has additional cleansing properties.

Washing my face is generally the first thing I do in the morning. Right now I’m using the Aveeno Baby Eczema wash which seems to work well for me. I then do this homemade toning type deal where I mix a little oatmeal bath with warm water and use a cotton pad as a toner with that.

In the evening I start with the Bioderma Sensibio H2O and then do the same as my morning routine. I’m really focused on redness, irritation, and eczema so this works well for me.

Mine is similar to yours. A lot of mornings I will just use a splash of warm water. At night I use a Sephora cleansing oil, then an actual sudsing face wash, right now I think it’s one from Almay. I use a scrub in the shower a few times a week to get any flakes off.

My routine is pretty simple and I’ve used the same base products for years. Here it is:

AM is just a quick wash with Tatcha’s Rice Polish Gentle (reformulated to be ph neutral). A bit of powder is transformed by warm water into a creamy, gently exfoliating cleanser. Apply and rinse. That’s it. On to skin care.

PM is a bit more complicated because I’m removing sunscreen, makeup, and the day’s grime. I remove my eye makeup with Chanel’s Bi-phase eye makeup remover and then apply Tatcha’s Camellia Cleansing Oil to my entire face. After gently massaging it all over my face, I add a bit of water to start the emulsifying process and then rinse it clean with more water. I go over my face with a washcloth that has been wring out in warm water to remove any residual oil. No double cleansing is necessary. I buy those bulk packages of cheap white washcloths from Target or Costco because I only use a washcloth once before washing it.

I never use micellaire cleansers or pre-moistened cleansing clothes because they sting my skin and leave a residue that is very irritating.

In the evening I use Clinique, Take The Day Off Balm. I massage it all over my face and eyes. Then I use a warm wet wash cloth to remove all my makeup. I follow this with either Rene Rouleau milky cleanser or Luxe Mint Cleanser. Neither of these are drying. Then I use a retinol, eye cream and a moisturizer. I go through a wash cloth every time I wash my face. I buy inexpensive muslin wash cloths in bulk.

I also LOVE that Clinique Redness Solutions cleanser – I leave it in the shower and always use in the mornings. And you’re right, it’s perfect if I’ve been using retinol or a heavier BHA/AHA treatment the night before!

Mornings – wash gel (I like now La Roche Posay Effaclar Gel).
Evenings – I also prefer dual clensing: I massage in cleansing milk (I like now Elemis Lime Blossom cleanser) then wipe off with paper towel, then massage on and wipe off again to ensure my face has no longlasting makeup remains. Then I wash my face with the same La Roche Posay Gel. For my eye makeup removal, I use Vichy micellar water, which is basically the only micellar water that I can use for this purpose. I was convinced to try out Bioderma micellar water, as I always hesitated to buy it for some reason (I think I just had a foreboading). Bought duo pack. It ended up with so heavy eye irritation, that I simply quit using it and discarded all the remaining bottles at home…
Another thing I hate is multi-use cotton/musline cloths. From hygienic perspective I simply don’t see a reason to use it. I received once in some monthly beautybox subscription and tried… the second time when I used it was for wiping the window of my car! Third time didn’t happen as I threw it away…

I’m so low maintenance. I wash my face with a gentle cleanser or just a microfiber makeup removing cloth at night (and only if I’m removing makeup). And, thanks to epic dry skin while I was pregnant, I don’t cleanse my face in the morning. If I’m doing myself up, I will just wet a cotton pad and wipe my face with it (just water, no micellar water or toner). It works great to lightly cleanse my skin of dirt and oil, but doesn’t dry it out too much.

I have a ton of things I use to wash my face depending on how it feels at the time . Right now I have a simple gel cleanser from Equate ( Walmart ) and it does the trick . I do use a washcloth . Nights I use Renova days I use Resist by Paola’s choice .
No breakouts . No dryness .

I have discovered SEPHORA brand CLEANSING-OIL-IN-BALM. It is thick like hard butter and pink in color. It smells nice. A tiny bit goes a long way. I massage the face, and lips, at bedtime and rinse with warm water. I no longer have chapped lips.

At night I use the Lancôme eye makeup remover on a microfiber cloth, then use Clinique’s cleansing balm then I use whatever face wash usually Korres yogurt face wash because it smells good. Then a toner and skincare. Love microfiber cloths for toner and eye makeup remover!

In the morning I try to wash with whatever sample of face wash I’m trying to use up and call it good.

At night I use Elemis pro collagen cleansing balm with my pop sonic leaf or washcloth. Or Philosophy deep purity balm, leave on a minute and rinse. I dont wash my face in the morning until i shower (same routine). Thats it pretty much. If I over do it my skin turns on me ugh

Hi! At night I double cleanse. First with a mix of olive oil and castor oil and then either Kiehls face wash w centella asiatica for sensitive skin or Mario Badescu enzyme cleanser.
In the morning again with the Kiehls, and 2x a week I cleanse with Clinique prep scrub.
I always follow with avene water that I leave for a minute and then a mild toner like pure rosewater.

    Your skin looks great!!

In the mornings, it’s a cleanser (right now CeraVe foaming) and a Clarisonic in the shower. Then pat dry and moisturize. At night, I remove my eye makeup with BiFacil and then wash with either a hydrating cleanser (Drunk Elephant or Origins are the two I have samples of currently) or TCFS Egg Mousse soap if I’m not feeling as dry. I generally use a konjac sponge with my cleanser in the evening to try to gently deep clean/minimize pores. Then pat dry and moisturize. I always wash my face (night routine) before and after working out, as well.
