What’s the Biggest Risk You Ever Took with Your Makeup?

May 28th, 2008 by Karen 52 Comments

What’s the biggest risk you ever took with your makeup?

Mine was orange lipgloss. It terrified me at first, but I’m addicted to it now. I also took chances on blue eyeshadow and bright colored lashes. One of the things I love about makeup is that even if a look doesn’t work out exactly how I hoped it would, makeup isn’t permanent. If I don’t like something, I can always wash it off!

What’s the biggest risk you ever took with your makeup? Let me know in the comments. And try your luck with the Makeup and Beauty Blog slot machine (click BET MAX above to start). You’ll need to have Flash installed on your computer to play. Have fun and good luck!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Mmmm I am game for anything Karen! the worst was a pinkish red Guerlain eyeliner which I put on my lower lashline. Sore eyes alert and I normally love pinks!

    Hi Rowena,

I can say that I’ve never, ever worn pinkish red eyeliner. You’re gutsy, girl! 🙂 How’s your day been so far?

    I love the graphic… now I remember why I don’t gamble!

Biggest risk? I tried ruby red lips and well, it didn’t work out. I’m a pink/netural lippy girl.

I would have to say bright colors in eye shadows. I have always been a neutral or a mascara only girl. But, this spring I have stepped out of the dark and put on light colored shimmery shades and have gotten more compliments than ever. Such a change for me.

That is sooo cool…. You have neverending surprises Karen!

My biggest makeup risk was going goth with a red lip to my junior prom… It wasn’t all the way goth because I didn’t use any white powder but it was almost there…

    Have a good day Karen!

Hmmm, good question. It could be this lavender shade of lipstick I bought on a whim last year. It actually looks really good which is a big surprise.haha Other than that it would be red lipstick/lip gloss. It’s always a risk buying something like that and I still haven’t found a shade that looks good! 🙁

Fun game! Too bad I can’t get anything.haha

The look I’ve risked (and can never get to work) is the smokey eye with the super-nude lip. Y’know, those lips that look like your skintone? They always look so hot in the magazine ads (those Prada ads, especially!) but I just end up feeling pasty! I always end up with a deeper neutral like Twig-twig!

Ooh! I want a slot machine that pays off in lip gloss! 😉

such a cool game. you are so unique always coming up with new fun ideas. i decided to try wonder mint mascara you recommended. i always wanted to try different colors, but was afraid they would not look great on me. i wear bright, bold eyeshadows color all the time, but was afraid of mascara. until i saw your post i had to give that color a try, and i so love it. it goes great with my skintone, and i receive compliments on mascara for the first time. thanks again!

    Hi Tuprnut,

LOL, it’s fun, yah? I just got three cherries in a row and I did a lil’ dance around my office.

Ruby red lips… yah, that’s one of those things that it can take years to find the exact right shade. I’m still looking for a beige that doesn’t make me look undead. Who knows how long that’s gonna take, sigh!

How have you been? Anything new with you?

I don’t think I take too many “risks” I may test my limits at work etc.

Probably something like lime green eye shadow, turquoise eye shadow, bright blue eye shadow (yes I think it’s doable) – or crazy sparkly false lashes…:-)

    Karen,

Well, with blue eyes I was always under the impression that browns and plums were all I could wear. Then I saw a BOGO sale on the L’oreal H.I.P. duos with a blue and a neutral (and some WnW LE palettes) and I was hooked. I could wear neutrals that I was comfy with, and line with a color. So, that was my baby steps. But, my heart (and eyes) have been captured with the Kitten summer palette and I am smitten! If any of you girls get the chance to get this, I say grab it up! It’s gorgeous! 🙂
Next, I am on to bright nails….wish me luck!

I feel quite lucky to say that I don’t think anything I’ve done has been risky – as you said, the whole point of makeup is that if you don’t like it you can wash it off.

I am a little unsure about the red lipstick thing though…I’ve got a good one, but I tend to stick to neutral lips so its always a bit of a shock when I’m wearing anything darker!

In your comment yesterday you asked me about the eyeliners I bought – they’re by a company called GOSH and the three I got are just like Urban Decay’s eyeliner pencils – they go on ultra-smooth and are half the price. I got Bananas (pale gold), Pretty Petrol (petrol blue) and Woody Green (a dark metallic green). I just got a few of their other eyeliners too, more like MAC’s Technakohls in Kamikaze (lime green), Flamingo (hot pink) and Aqua Line (turquoise). I’ve not worn any of them yet, but I’ll give them a try at the weekend. If they’re good, I’ll be getting more shades – there are tons!

Hope you’re having a good Wednesday!

My biggest makeup mistake is when I tried to overdue it with blush. I had someone come up to me and say,”Are you wearing blush?” I realized that I was wearing to much and that blush is supposed to blend and look natural.

I’ve always loved red lipstick so i went out and bought a tube of MAC’s Russian Red. It looks so bright against my Asian skin, but i don’t care-it’s hot!! It takes a lot of confidence to wear the red lip WELL because women these days don’t sport the look. I say…BRING THE RED BACK!

Probably using artists brushes for makeup, it was a risky move to me. Now it works wonderfully and I don’t regret getting them at all. The worst mistake I’ve ever made was buying that makeup remover from Rimmel. It’s worse than water to remove my makeup! The 2nd worst move was the Maybelline eye makeup remover because it’s pure mineral oil => big time blur vision 🙁

    1. I LOVE you blog and I love that you’re a fellow Pinay! 🙂

    2. I’m addicted to your slot machine.

    3. My biggest makeup risk was with a clear greenish MAC lipglass called Squirt. (Does anyone remember it?) It was horrific by itself, but layered with a lipstick like Touch it gave something very neutral a nice depth.

Also, there was a MAC lipstick that was like a silvery/pewtery color. Horrific now, but was trendy in the late 90’s.

Loving that slot machine! It’s setting the mood for my trip to Vegas in July. I guess the boldest I’ve ever gone with makeup was wearing red lipstick. I’m such a neutral lover it’s not even funny! But one of my girls had a red themed birthday party, so I decided to give it a try. I used MAC’s Viva Glam I. It didn’t turn out that bad!

    Happy Hump Day Karen!

The biggest risk I ever took was wearing blue eye shadow. I never wanted to look like Mimi on the Drew Carey Show. I just had to learn to wear it the right way or really, the way that it suit me.

Also another risk was liquid liner. I have the shakiest hand and have had such a hard time mastering this skill. But I finally found a formula and technique that works for me.

And Karen, I am a gamblin’ fool!

I saw a green Lipglass at MAC the other day and got very curious about it! I’ll have to ask about when I go there next. It seemed really interesting.

So, I totally know what late 90’s look you’re talking about. I totally rocked that Faith Evans lip, with the purple-ish liner and the silver/pewter lipstick.

Hmmm, I’m just beginning to get a tad daring with make-up. Before it was neutrals all the way and a wash of a pinkish-gold colour.

I actually rocked Mutiny to school last week, it was really fun and I got a lot of compliments on it. That and blush. I was terrified of blush and how it would make me look like a clown. But now I can’t do without my peaches 🙂 I’ll pick up some blushbaby next time I’m there, I think it’ll look better in winter when I’m a bit paler, then the orange of peaches’ll just look weird I think.

Hi Karen! Great game! Mine was MAC Chrome Yellow all over the lid with black eyeliner and Nars Fire Down Below lipstick. Very modish, very cool. Unfortunately, no matter what base I use after about an hour it turns kind of dirty yellow with olive on me, like an old bruise. I’d like it to look as vibrant as in the pan. I have a medium pale skin with olive undertone. Any ideas?
P.S.: MAC Chrome Yellow and Nars Barbuda look amazing together… on other people…. on me they look even more like a bruise.

I know! The funny thing is this is the one make-up product my mum actually really likes on me. She’s been complaining how I look pale (aka sickly to her) for years and now I started wearing blush she’s like: you look infinitely better, what have you done?
    And me: Make-up mom, blush!

This is a good one because it really made me think. I’ve always been eager to experiment with makeup and try new things (with the exception of a black liquid eyeliner, pencil thin brows and harsh lipliner phase I went through in the 90s *shudder*).

So this question made me realize that I tend to be much more daring when experimenting with eye makeup and blushes, bronzers, etc. I’ve been wearing a lot of low key peach and nude glosses for the most part on my lips though.

Last spring I got an itch to have red lips. For as gutsy as I tend to be with makeup, I’ve been scared to death of red for years. I think it has something to do with a blue-red lipliner that came in one of those cheap all-in-one makeup kits I had as a preteen, but I digress.

So on a whim I strutted into the MAC store and told a salesgirl, “I want red lips. But not classic winter red lips. I want fun, bright, spring red lips.” She didn’t skip a beat. Without saying a word, she held up one finger and walked away, returning in a moment with Fafi Flash-N-Dash glaze (the Fafi line had just come out). I took one look at it and had an impulse to sprint out the door. It wasn’t red at all, but a sparkly bright red-orangey-pinky color that I thought would look horrible on me. At her insistence, I tried it on, and it actually looks red on me. And it was beautiful! I bought the last one and three other girls in the store went downstairs to the Nordstrom MAC counter to get the same color because they liked it so much. So this is my go-to red for the warmer months. Maybe next year I’ll try a winter red.

I had permanent makeup tattoes for my eyebrows and lips. It was TERRIFIC. I liked having my eyebrows so well defined. My lips were in a pink neutral and they put a brightener in the ink. I lasted a long time and I loved it.
