Whenever I play Maroon 5 in my office Tabs runs out of the room (he will hang out for Biggie though, LOL!). I’m telling you this because I can’t get that Payphone song out of my head, and I’ve been listening to it repeatedly, much to Tabs’ chagrin.
El Hub came home singing it the other day, and now it seems like we don’t go 20 minutes before one of us starts, “I’m at a payphone…”
Tabs has not been thrilled. 🙂
I’ve been trying to remember the last time I actually used a payphone, and I think it might’ve been around 1993. Hard to believe there was a time when you couldn’t easily get a hold of people 24 hours a day, isn’t it?
Now, I feel weird whenever I’m without my iPhone. Although, truth be told, I use my phone more to take pics of my cat than I do to speak with people, haha!
I just don’t have the patience to sit and talk on the phone for long periods of time anymore, not that I’m a bigger fan of texting, especially when it comes to sharing important news or well-wishes, like “Happy birthday!” or “Merry Christmas!” For things like that, I think you still gotta pick up the phone.
A single gal pal of mine tells me that texting is the big thing now in dating. She says that when boys ask her out, they always do it via text.
I don’t know if I could handle that if I were single. I mean, what if you met a really cute, great guy who texted terribly? I’m not down for dudes who send texts like, “C U 2NITE!” Please, I beg you, take the extra 5 seconds to spell out your words. Please.
Then again, I broke up with a guy once because he used ellipses at the end of every sentence in his emails… (I know I use them a lot, too…and I purposefully leave off that fourth dot at the end of sentences.)
I’ll say this about El Hub: the boy gives GREAT email.
I’ve been out of the dating game for a while, so I’m curious — what’s it like nowadays? For the single gals (and guys), do you think it’s easier or tougher to find a decent date? Does technology help or hinder dating?

My worst date was where dude asked me out (and this was in my 20s), and at a dinner of fish and chips no less wanted to split the dinner and couldn’t afford to even by a drink to go with. Now it’s one thing if it’s agreed your both broke but I didn’t even know this was the deal… I didn’t want to make him feel bad so I went along with it but suffice to say that was our last date ;-(
I think dating is tougher these days. Reason said, the social networks and todays society leaves no room for someone to really get to know another person on a face to face level, or just by having a nice lunch or dinner. Everything is either done by facebook, or via texting. No bueno!

I haven’t dated enough to have a ‘worse’ date. It’s all been so-so dates.
My BF and I have been together eight years now. I can’t even remember what a date was like, we so lazy and comfortable at this point. Although the first weekend meeting and staying with his parents was pretty interesting when their Dalmatian bit my face. 911, ambulance ride, 13 stitches — it was pretty memorable.
I actually prefer texting to talking these days, BUT if you’re a terrible speller,call,lol. I like to spell words out and use perfect English in texts. 🙂

My best date has been with my 3 year old daughter .. She loves makeup and clothes and yesterday we were together at Nars counter at Sephora .. I tried Nars Schiap and she beamed “” Mumma, it’s awesome” .. Though I found it too much on me, but I still bought it .. Love makes you do crazy things.. We had vanilla cup with banana ice creams .. I also bought her 5 sundresses .. Ready to hit the beach and I’m definitely wearing Schiap today !!
The best date ive ever been on was a blind folded car trip to monterey bay aquarium, then walking around the beach boardwalk and ending at a nice restaurant by the pier with a beautiful view of the ocean 🙂
The worst date I was ever on was a blind date. My best friend fixed me up with a jockey! I am 5’9″ and of course I wore heels because we were going dancing!
The best date I ever had was with a really sweet boy who borrowed his brother’s Corvette to impress me. It was a stick shift and he couldn’t drive it so we lurched and bumped during the whole ride. After a late movie, he pulled over to a park and opened his trunk. Inside was a picnic basket full of food, (that he made himself) a bottle of wine. We had a romantic midnight picnic! I found his thoughtfulness and desire to impress me so charming and will never forget him.

Worst date I ever had was back in college days. It was a fix up and he called me by the wrong name all night. I would correct him and he’d get it right once then go back to the other name. Clearly he had someone else on his mind. lol
I had been dating my bf for several months but he hadn`t still met my frieds. They even made fun of me saying that it was actually an imaginary guy! At last he agreed to come for dinner, but half an hour earlier he called me to say he had an inexpected family thing and was really sorry but he couldn’t make it. 5 mins later I received a text that was obviously not for me “Hi!I’ll be there in 20. What movie do you feel like?”

Fantastic post as always =) I don’t think that technology has hindered the dating process. I actually think it has made it easier to figure out if the guy’s right or not. As far as texting goes, one of my pet peeves is that people in general don’t spell out all their words, I also don’t like abbreviations when it’s not necessary to do so.
Worst date ever was when I was 20 and I met a guy who told me he was 20……by the end of our first date he revealed he was 17…….almost.

I went on a surprise date once. He took me to a rodeo. They were selling confederate flags in the little gift kiosk. My shoes got totally ruined. Pretty much a mess all around.
My worst date was the icing on a crappy day. It was during Summer break in HS and I was already bummed because my favorite actor was leaving my favorite soap (I’ve only ever watch one soap, Santa Barbara). I was woken up around 5am ( loved sleeping late during the Summer) by my mom telling me that she accidentally slit her wrist getting the last of the mustard out of a squeeze container, so I had to get up so we could go to the hospital. So, after all that was taken care of & I was home that afternoon, I told my boyfriend & he decided to treat me to a surprise date. His dad blew the surprise while he was driving us to the bowling alley to meet up with a couple of my girlfriends & my boyfriend’s brother & his friend. Just one thing: I do not bowl. So we three girls just hung out in our dink town’s bowling alley (BORING!), while the guys bowled. Plus, it turned out my clueless boyfriend was horrible at bowling, so I don’t know what the heck he was thinking with the whole thing. What a crappy ending to a crappy day.
Just had a huge event last night – spent weeks planning for it, and everyone came together smoothly! So happy (and tired!)

My husband and I differ on this. The first movie we went to see together as a couple was “Waking Ned Divine”,which I loved, and he hated. However this was when we had our first kiss, so in the end we both agreed that it was a success! 🙂

Favorite date night look is a simple, neutral eye (say, UD’s Underground with Bourbon 24/7 liner) with a bright lip color (MAC Color Saturation has been my go-to for the latter as of late!).
Best date was when my hubs and I were dating. We were at a fancy-schmancy restaurant, and he decided to order milk to drink with dessert. The server was completely caught off guard, but we ended up with milk served in wine glasses 🙂

My best date was when my current boyfriend took me out before he went home for the summer. We weren’t even together yet, but he wanted to hang out before he left. I told him to surprise me and he ended up taking me to the park on a really nice, sunny day. We sat by the pond and talked for awhile. It felt like I was in some cheesy chick flick, but I had a great time!
My first date with my soon to be husband (yay!!!) was AMAZING!!! We both lived in London (UK) back then (we now live in California) and it all started as friends. He took me out for dinner to this really romantic restaurant close to the river and after dinner we took a long walk until we got to the Big Ben and then went to my place for some drinks, we talked all night and made out a little. He was such a gentleman! that’s why we are still together and getting married 🙂

I sort of feel like all of my dating experiences didn’t really happen until after I got into a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with them since I’ve never used dating as a means of getting to know someone. I’ve always ended up with people that I already knew and us getting to know each other never really happened during formal dates but more through just hanging out with mutual friends and what not.
Currently in a relationship with my first boyfriend. However, we didn’t really get here without a lot of trouble. XD Broke up, pretty much hated each others guts, I dated other people for several years, and now we’re back together again after both of us grew up a bit. Been weeding the yard and consequently going thru my sunscreen about 5 times the normal rate. Yay for nice weather though!
BEST DATE EVER: first date with my now hubby. We started out walking around some shops and having dinner together…then we literally danced all night!! He was and still is the sweetest gentleman! Got home at 6 in the morning and knew I was hooked!
I’ve never really been on a normal date (get asked out, go out on date, wait around to see if he’ll call). All my relationships have kind of gone from “we’re hanging out” directly to “we’re together” without all the first date stuff I see on TV. I have asked a guy out though… the most significant time was in 11th grade. I asked a guy that I was friendly with and had a huge crush on to go to junior prom with me. He said he’d tell me after spring break (wha?), but we did end up going together.
That’s so weird!!! I literally just read another blog entry where someone said they couldn’t stop listening to Payphone and I was listening to it when I read this blog entry. Haha what a coincidence!
decided to do a big purge of my makeup collection, use up some things that have just been laying around, toss really old stuff and donate/giveaway back-ups of products I no-longer life. So cathardic and now I don’t feel so bad for the makeup haul i’m planning in a couple days!
I don’t think I would be thrilled to get an invite for a first date via a text msg- I just wouldn’t accept the offer. Am I considered too ‘old school’ ?

Happy Saturday! I’m single. I like being independent and being able to do my own thing. The only time I hate being single is when there is a bug/spider in the house & I have to be the one to kill it. The worst is a roach. Gag, throw up. Oh and the only other time it sucks is when people are coupled up and think therefore you should be with someone. Like somehow you are not complete unless you are with someone or they try to hook you up with someone just because they are “niceâ€. Ok that maybe true, but there’s got to be something more than just “nice’ & oh nice on the outside does not equal nice on the inside!

I used a payphone at a 7-11 late last year. We were amazed that there are a few working payphones left. I think we should still have them as an emergency backup in case something major happens to cell phone towers.
There is a hospital here.that still has phone booths inside the building. They work as well.

M worst date was actually in some ways my best. Long story short: my date was running for political office. We met while both working booths at a trade show. Essentially, the first date was a nice dinner where he paid, and also vetted me. He was pretty much making sure that I wouldn’t have any awkward/bad stories/skeletons come out during a campaign, that I wouldn’t be a liability. So on one hand, it made for a bad date in that it was almost a job interview. But at least there was no pretension of getting involved and then breaking up because I wouldn’t pass muster as a political wife. Props for knowing what he wanted/needed, being a gentleman, etc… Maybe could have waited for the second date though. 🙂

I’m in a relationship and I think my best date thus far has been our two year anniversary. He turned our little apartment into a spa (with candles, rose petals and the whole shabam) and made me dinner. It was really sweet.

I love that Payphone song, too. Best date was my second date with my now-husband. We took a long ride on his Harley and he got a tattoo that he let me help him design. I knew even then that there was something different about him in a really good way. Just a few more weeks until our one year anniversary.
While I am happily married now, I did have a pretty horrible date while I was out searching…
I had met this guy, a friend of a friend, at college and he seemed pretty nice and normal. However, when he showed up at the bar for our date, he was dressed like a… well, I don’t even know what he was trying to do! He was a really thin Indian guy, but he had on these HUGE jeans – he could have fit 3 of himself in each leg – plus a super-baggy baseball jersey, an upside-down visor, big honkin’ gold chain with a ginormous eagle pendant, and a big chunk of diamond in his ear. He also acted like a totally different person! I was so confused!! He then proceeded to get really drunk and be a jerk. Fortunately I ran into a friend and had him come back to the table with me. I went to the bathroom and came back to find my drunk friend dancing on the table and my date slapping his ass! I decided I’d had enough and left. I got an email from the guy a few days later, saying he really didn’t want to be in a relationship with me, but would I willing to be friends with benefits?!?! REALLY?!?!?
I can laugh about it now, but WOW, the nerve of some guys!!!

Oh gosh, dating. I’m so glad I’m done with that! First dates are just so awkward, no matter what. What do you like to do for fun? How many siblings do you have? Etc. etc. etc.
Ever since I started doing activist stuff related to things like feminism and queer theory, I haven’t been able to date normally. Like, I can rage about how guys are always the ones who pay on dates and buy gifts for their girlfriends, seemingly expecting nothing in return. Until he expects the girl to have sex with him whenever he wants to, completely ignoring what her desires are, as though this is a right he gets for being a “good boyfriend”. I don’t get why it irks me so much. Maybe these kinds of heteronormative gender roles make me feel like a prostitute.
The worst date I was ever on: he took me to Olive Garden and he ate his food with his fingers.

The best date I’ve ever been on was just recently for my fiancé and I 5 year anniversary. We’ve known each other since we were 9 years old, but didn’t get together until 5 years ago. We went out to dinner then when we came home, he surprised me with a beautiful ring in front of our kids. (I had one from a previous relationship, she’s 7 yo, and we have 2 together, 3 yo and 10 mos. all girls, bless his heart LOL)
I don’t have any truly HORRIBLE date stories, but there was the one where the dude couldn’t come up with a good date idea, so we decided to meet for coffee and decide from there. Then, of course, we spent like half an hour saying, “Soooo, what should we do?”
This is why I have cats.

my friend set me up with a guy she swore was just perfect for me- he drank a bottle and a half of wine at dinner, scotch afterwards, smoked cigars, and then tried to kiss me, slurring his way thru all sorts of reasons why we were meant for each other. i finally couldn’t take it any longer and told him I would be taking a cab home and i hoped that he would also take a cab. he followed me home and knocked on my door making all sorts of unintelligible excuses for why he should be allowed in. he was too drunk to drive, too annoying to deal with and a friend of a friend. i offered to call him a cab just before he passed out on my front porch. the next morning, i woke him up by turning on the sprinklers. my friend called me later to say he thought i was a bitch but wanted to go out again? not in your booze soaked dreams buddy
The best, most amazing first date in my life ended up being the beginning of the most destructive relationship I’ve ever had. Years later, I still don’t have much desire to start another one.
Oooh I haven’t dated in so long I’ve forgotten! Which is probably good because I know there were some really bad ones in there, pre-DH, lol.
