Two Ways to Win $102 in NYX Cosmetics, a $200 American Express Gift Card and MORE!

July 15th, 2010 by Karen 996 Comments

  • The giveaway is now closed, and the winner is being contacted. Before you go, check the home page for ongoing giveaways.

For turning 30, my parents threw me a birthday bash at a crowded drag queen karaoke bar in the South Bay. I wore a pink outfit, sported a jewel-encrusted tiara and wobbled across the stage singing songs in four-inch heels. When the queens, rocking fierce hair and makeup, dragged (ha!) me up on stage to harmonize We Are Family with them, I felt like a star. 🙂

I’ve always adored drag queens, so when the folks at Logo, the channel that airs the hit RuPaul’s Drag Race, offered to host today’s giveaway and share deets about their new RuPaul show (RuPaul’s Drag U) premiering July 19, I jumped for joy (not in heels, though)!

Bust out your most glittery shadow because…

At RuPaul’s Drag U, class is in session!

In the show, RuPaul serves as the Dean of Drag at Drag U, guiding women (the kind who, um, don’t have to tuck) through extreme makeup, beauty and confidence transformations — drag queen style.

The students are everyday women looking for a little help with their style and confidence (false lashes, anyone?).

At the start of the show, RuPaul inputs each student’s info into the Dragulator (cutting-edge technology, LOL!), which assigns them drag names and gives a glimpse of each woman’s potential.

With the help of Drag Race alumni, the ladies learn how to get in touch with their softer sides and unleash their inner divas! The pressure’s on, too, because each show ends with the women doing a musical number in front of a live audience of friends and family.

There can be only one — valedictorian. One of the ladies in each episode is chosen as valedictorian of her class, but every one leaves Drag U a lil’ more confident, sassy and knowledgeable about makeup and beauty.

Drag U and you

Catch Drag U on the Logo channel starting July 19 at 9 p.m. (check your local listings). You can also follow Drag U on Facebook and take the Dragulator out for a spin.

I have been Dragulated!!

Time for the giveaway!

To kick off the show, the folks at Logo put together a fantastic prize package worth $322.

I definitely unleash my inner drag queen with bold, bright shades of eyeshadow. My favorite is to use two contrasting bright shades (like Too Faced Mess in a Dress and Urban Decay Peace) on my lid and then hit the corners with a little Chrome Yellow. I also love ridiculous shoes.

I unleash my inner drag queen whenever I dare to wear bight makeup to work and beyond! Drag queen diva-dom is about learning to embrace who you are along with your inner and outer beauty – working a purple eye or a hot pink lip makes me confident that I’m being ME to the most I can be.

    Happy belated birthday!

I love karaoke!!! As I like to joke, I’m one of the few people I know who likes karaoke even when she’s sober. lol. To bring out my inner drag queen, I like to hook up my karaoke machine, grab the microphone, and launch passionately into one of the most disco-queeny-fierce-woman track on my karaoke CDs. I dance, my arms flies up, I like to add an arm flutter a la Patti LaBelle. I also have a red and black boa. (In retrospect, I don’t even remember how I came to get those boas. lol.)

I think if I broke myself down to the most basic of compounds I would be glitter, lipstick, and water. My friends like to joke that I must have been a queen in my past life since I have this unnatural obsession to put glitter and rhinestones on my face for going out dancing with my girls. They also like to joke that if they see a speck of glitter anywhere then I must have been there recently. I can’t help that I love sparkles. But what (drag of drama) queen doesn’t? lol

The closest thing I do to drag queen makeup is actually my “lazy days”. On those days, I line my eyes with way thicker eyeliner than I do any other day. Granted, thats the only thing I put on my eyes but it’s still very thick liner.

OMG – are you kidding me? Drag Race is my favorite reality contest show! If Ru hosted ANTM I would never miss an episode. I cannot go on enough on how much I love Rupaul and this show!!!
I turn on my inner drag queen by amping up my glossy lips and learning from Season 1’s Rebecca Glasscock when she was teaching the butch chick how to walk in heels:

“IF YOUR FEET START TO HURT WALK FASTER!”

Yup – I do that when I wear my stilettos at work.

Miss Karen– Can’t tell you how in love I am with you!! I lurve your fierce style and sassy hair. What I wouldn’t give for a wig that looked like that!! I think you are simply adorable and makes me miss my former years as a hawaiian. 🙂

I love your blog, I love your sense of humor, I love your ghetto-ness (makes me feels soooo at home), and I love your pics and thoughts and all the effort you put in. Your voice seems so natural when you write, with the exception of the adorable Tabs (Im HIGHLY allergic) I think we would make a great fag/hag team. LOL

I also love RuPaul and being a drag queen. I get my dragiliciousness on just about every weekend. I love lashes and great skin and sparkles and color….my makeup kit is REDONKULOUS. If you are ever in Phoenix Arizona, come by IcePics VideoBar and see the show each Saturday at 10pm, or check me out on youtube, search for ‘Roulette + tampons’ and ‘Roulette + new products’. You can see two commercials I wrote and made about my OWN fake line of products. 🙂

Coincidently, I am doing a show here in town with Raven from the Drag Race next Saturday the 24th. Anyways, I love your blog and read it everyday. Keep up the good work!!!

Sure it’s over the top, but it ain’t easy to achieve the look! In any casy, my inner diva comes out when I go to Indian weddings, since our outfits are so over the top and colorful, it’s ok to actually pull off the big lashes, smoky eye, and dark lips at the same time. =)

If I were brave enough my inner drag queen would be unleashed with my eye makeup. I’m not sure I’ve seen a better cat eye or any kind of eye makeup than on them! But alas, I’m usually not that brave enough to go the full distance when it comes to any kind of makeup.

OMG a Drag U contest! If I don’t win this, I’ll die! I am such a huge Drag Race fan and have been counting down the days ’til Drag U starts. I even called up a web radio show when Jujubee was a guest a couple of months ago and tried to pump her for details about the show! (I think the Logo people must have told her not to give too much away, but she was a sweetheart anyway!)

I unleash my inner drag queen by doing bold makeup- I love bright colors and glitter, and when it comes to contouring, sometimes, in the words of Miss RuPaul herself, it gets “severe up in here!” I am not ashamed to admit that I have watched Drag Race exclusively for picking up makeup ideas!

I also sing all of RuPaul’s songs from the show to my cats, changing the lyrics to be about them. (e.g., “Kitty cat! Put the bass in your walk!”)

*Whew, ok. Need to stop before you think I’m TOO crazy!*

I absolutely LOVE karaoke! I own my own Magic Mic karaoke system and would often karaoke at home by myself for the sake of my mental health. I can’t pick just one favorite karaoke song since I’m an avid karaoke-er and I go through song moods. There have been times when my set staples have included songs like White Flag by Dido and The Scientist by Coldplay. When I’m feeling extra super ambitious and just need to belt it out I go for songs like Run to You by Whitney Houston or Voice Within by Christina Aguilera. And then I lose my voice. Hahahaha! Lately I’ve been on a Pink and Gwen Stefani mood so I’ve been singing Just Like A Pill and Cool, but not Hollaback Girl! That song is NOT good for karaoke…

I unleash my inner drag whenever I put on my San Diego Cheer Elite uniform, fierce makeup, and sparkly eyelashes to boot 🙂 I’ll be unleashing my inner drag this Saturday at a performance on SD Pride’s main stage at 2:45pm 🙂

This is such a great giveaway in honor of your birthday!! 🙂

My favorite karaoke song is “I Love Rock n’ Roll.” I know it isn’t the most original song to sing to but I love getting to belt it out with friends on a microphone in front of a bunch of people. It’s always something that can make take my frown and turn it upside down. 🙂

When me and my best friend go out and get our drink on, people are in trouble if there is karoake going on! We are both completely tone deaf, and she is the loudest person I know.
We always sing “I Touch Myself” by the DiVinyls much to the mortification of her hubby and my man, lol, but we always have a blast and that’s what makes it so much fun!

Guy Pierce pulls off drag surprisingly well. I almost didn’t believe it was him in Priscilla Queen of the Desert! His muscular arms give him away though…and speaking of fierce drag queens, has anyone seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch? It’s a pretty edgy film but, holy crow, Hedwig’s insanely glittery makeup is so, well, insane! I wish I was gutsy enough to pull off big, glittery, red lips.

I used to work with a man whose given name was Jade. He had the craziest, archiest eyebrows I had EVER seen! On weekends, the whole store used to go downtown to see his drag act. He performed as “Jade” (like Sade!!!). He was amazing! We used to bring in shoulder pads that we cut out of jackets and shirts so he could use them to pad his dresses!

Hahaha don’t even get me started. Thick black eyeliner (usually top lid only, but ocassionally I’ll use a lil on the bottom outer corner) and black volumizing mascara (Maybelline Colossal!), then usually a plain lip/near-plain lip (maybe use a light pink) since I don’t want the makeup to look too fake. But if I’m feeling daring enough I’ll grab some deep plum or dark red lipstick, maybe some hot pink if I’m feeling like it…but usually I’ll keep a neutral eye with the lip to keep all attention on it. For blush I’ll always be VERY careful…because although I do like bits of dramatization, I just don’t like the I-used-everything-in-my-kit look.

    I love RuPaul’s Drag Race!!

To me, unleashing my inner drag queen means very arched, bold brows, huge lashes (requires falsies), perfect face makeup (foundation), bronzed skin, and pale pink, almost stripper, lips. Hair should be very big and glamorous (something along the lines of Beyonce), dress should be skin-tight and show off every curve, there should be LOTS of cleavage, and heels should be sky high. A bold, confident personality is also required. =)

Well, my inner drag queen usually doesn’t come out until I tie on a serious buzz. Liquored up I go into the bathroom and find myself bored with whatever neutral look I am wearing that day. I proceed to apply dramatic makeup that I would otherwise not have the confidence to wear, like thick cat-eye liner, loads of mascara, and fuchsia lips! Then when I realize I am outta booze, I head to the gay bar with my pals and hang out with some real drag queens!

Forget having boring neutrals on all the time! I love to have an eye-full of color (haha!). I wore false eye lashes for my wedding and a whole new part of my soul opened up!

Oh. My. God. I am a devoted fan of Drag Race. Nina Flowers will forever be my favorite queen. She can WERK! As for why I love the queens? They’re men; men who impersonate women and make me proud to be a lady. It may be silly but I truly look up to the queens. They are gorgeous performers and mighty talented. I love their bold make-up. Now if only I can do my own make-up as good as Nina. *sighs* One of these days. <3

I LOVE the “Prance I said” picture! It reminds me of an episode of Made on MTV where Janice Dickinson was teaching the “Pony Prance.” It’s the move you do when you are wearing stilettos and walking on grass. You walk on your toes and pick your knees up high with each step so that the heel doesn’t sink into the ground.

Whenever I think of make up and drag queens, I think of MAC’s Heatherette collection! Lolol! So, I’m dying to see what RuPaul’s Drag U has to offer with his drag queen makeovers. How would I release my inner drag queen? I would amp up the volume of my hair and pick out some bold colors for my eyes. Maybe that teal eye you should us in the Saturday Surfing post and I would put on some false eyelashes to match! And some confidence? What’s a drag queen without confidence? Lol.

What’s a girl gotta do to get some fierce up in here? I’m in love, and I mean, in LOVE with make-up. In fact, I may enjoy playing with cosmetics more then most men probably do. Hell, do most men even enjoy make-up? Oh well, I do! Some day I dream of being a glamorous drag queen, but until then I like to practice make-up on myself and my friends. Practice makes perfect, and no one wants to see sloppy joe performing ‘I am woman’ on stage! I want to look like a hot mess and without a doubt I’m sure that NYX Cosmetics could unleash the inner drag queen inside me tugging at my heart saying, “Bitch! Put that wig on! Who cares if it’s not yours! Bitch, you better work! Or else!” of course, she’ll also be singing ‘Jealous of my Boogie’ by RU over and over again until I end up stealing that wig! I guess I wouldn’t have to steal wigs if I had that gift card, but we’ll see now won’t we? Please don’t make me steal wigs. Pretty please?

I do, however, have no shame in expressing myself through song and bad choreography as often as possible with my kids (16, 7 and 6). It can happen anywhere…in the car (arm choreography included) and always at home.

RuPaul is THE ultimate Drag Queen. Although she/he does everything in excess, eyshadow, lipstick, eyelash, big hair, shiny, loud clothing, 6 inch heels, it somehow works for her and she looks fabulous. As a woman, if I looked half as good as she did, I’d be in heaven.

By emulating her attitude, which is just as outrageous and Big as her appearance, which is what makes her a star, I release the inner drag queen in me by wearing bright eyeshadows and lipstick/gloss together even though the experts say “the rules” are one or the other. I LOVE huge eyelashes and wear a lot of mascara, as long as it doesn’t flake and have that spidery appearance, I wear my hair super long although not necessarily the style most women wear today. I create my own look based upon what makes me happy, not because the experts say so. And particularly, I always have my eyes overdone because I believe my eyes are my best feature and I like attracting attention to them. I love wearing the bright colors and am not afraid to experiment with color. But none of this would ever work if I didn’t have the attitude to match the outward appearance. So Atitiude is the key to releasing the inner drag queen in me.
