Seemingly random question: Have you visited the toy section at Target lately? — because HOLY SPICY GUACAMOLE. Times have changed.
I was at the store with Connor the other day because she’s been home from school this week for mid-winter break, and well, apparently, dolls as a general toy category have become Instagrammed out!
Yup, did you know that there are dolls with color-blocked eyeshadow, bladed brows that could cut glass, and smudged-out smokey lower lash lines?
Is it just me, or do these dolls look like they received lip injections?
Instagram baddie winged liner is also alive and well (in case you were wondering).
It’s interesting to see how social media beauty standards have influenced so much! — including dolls in the toy aisle!
I guess that’s a good thing? Hmm…
One welcome change, though, is the variety of skin tones that are available for dolls now. It’s a much more inclusive world! There are so many more skin tones and hair types than there were when I was a kid.
Now, there are even male dolls with fabulous, fluffy hair, and guess what? They’re wearing makeup too.
I thought they were girls with short hair wearing suits at first, and my immediate response was, “That’s cool!”
I’ve since been informed by my friend Cindy that this trio of dudes is the Korean boy band, BTS.
Please note their Cara Delevingne bushy brows… 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!

Hahaha… those guys are not only wearing makeup, but their eyebrows are ombre!
So instagram!
Those girl dools… well… I can even see through phome how they have caked and baked their foundation.
And all in all… I have abit dual senses on seing these dolls: it’s a nice souvenier from late 10’s and early 20’s of this century, and in the meantime – we quite know how much distortion of natural beauty it represents…
Karen says
Ha ha, I noticed that about their brows too!
Michele DiCola says
Some of them look like they are drugged , look at those popped out eyes ?
Karen says
I was thinking their eyes looked a little off!

we have jeffreestar to thank for these very makeupped dollies
Karen says
That first one kinda looks like him, right?!
FaeFrau says
LOL, yeah. Even the Lotta Looks, based on his uber-hyped Bloodlust palettes. 😀 I never seen such over-the-top fandom!

Wow, I can’t believe Instagram-type makeup has made it to dolls. So strange! But like you I’m glad to see some diversity finally, and I like that there are boy dolls too…I find toy aisles to be endlessly gendered and it drives me crazy!
Karen says
Yes, I think the boy dolls are a good thing. A few of the moms I know let their boys play with baby dolls… Love it!
Tatiana says
Such pretty boys! The sold over 2.6 million copies of their most recent album in about 6 hours the day it was released.

And they can dance, too!

Seriously, good for them! You know you’re doing it right when your doll makes it to Target!

I pass. I go to the toy aisle offer, like every 2 weeks as I have two toddlers but I have not seen these dolls. I wouldn’t buy them either, they look scary. My cousin bought my three year old an American girl doll for Xmas. They have a line named Truly Me where you select from different features to look like your kid. Hella expensive for a doll but if Connor really likes them then maybe she will take extra care of it. Mine doesn’t play with hers, at all. Maybe you can get her one of those and if you do I’ve been told the doll clothes for the My Generation dolls at Target fits the American girl dolls. These weren’t around when I was a kid.
Karen says
Hi Claudia,
Connor has a few baby dolls but that’s about it. She mostly plays with stuffed animals! How old are your toddlers?
Erica says
Times haven’t changed. You got old lol. My daughter is 17 and had Brat Dolls and Barbie. Dolls always reflect the time. Heck when I was little Barbie ALWAYS had fake lashes and full beat. She dressed always glamorous or sexy. JS she was never sweet and inmocent. That was reserved for Skipper?
Anne says
These look weird! Not as weird as some people on the streets wearing the full InstaGlam, but still. I think they would freak me out in a dim light room at night.
