Happy Labor Day weekend, guys. ? If you need me, you’ll find me in the front yard, otherwise known as “The neverending project that has haunted me for months.” I’ll be knee-deep in dirt today because we’re laying down sod…which leads me to these beauties! El Hub came home with these Improved Meyer Lemon trees from Costco the other day. He knocked on the front door, and when I opened it said, “Look what I got for ya!” (I’m picky about my lemons and have been known to ramble on and on about the virtues of the Meyer lemon.)
I often see these big, bushy lemon trees around the neighborhood, so I’m hoping that will happen with these guys, and the day will come when I’ll be so overloaded with lemons that I won’t even know what to do with myself. I’ll be making pasta al limone and lemon bars left and right! ? Let’s manifest that food dream, shall we? LOL!
Now, while I go set this citrus vision in motion, here’s your beauty reading for the week… ?
- This fall, more celebs are entering the beauty game with new makeup lines. Singer Selena Gomez just launched her Rare Beauty line at Sephora. One percent of all Rare Beauty sales will be donated to the Rare Impact Fund (started by Gomez last July), which ambitiously aims to raise $100 million over the next decade to help address the gaps in mental health services for underserved communities.
- Former MTV reality TV star LC, otherwise known as Lauren Conrad, just launched a makeup line as well. Who would’ve thunk the girl that Stephen didn’t choose on Laguna Beach and that Heidi betrayed on The Hills would become such a marketing force? Good for you, Lauren! Make lemonade out of those lemons!
- And it’s not just celebs launching makeup lines, either. Swedish perfume brand Byredo (two words: GYPSY WATER) is now selling a makeup line with lipsticks, multi-use color sticks, lip balm, mascara, black liquid eyeliner and three eye shadow palettes with the funkiest packaging.
- Speaking of new, here’s what’s hitting shelves this month from Anastasia, L’Oréal, Urban Decay and more.
- Just in case you were lookin’ to do some online beauty shopping during the Labor Day weekend…
- I can’t wait to watch the new live-action remake of Mulan, which is available now for $30 on Disney+ (but will stream for free starting in December), and you better believe I’ll be checking out the hair and makeup. It took two years for hair and makeup designer Denise Kum to bring the movie characters to life.

One of my favorite movies, ever. Easily top ten!
Fun fact: I used to eat at a Thai restaurant in Marin County where Bonnie Raitt was known to hang out, but I never saw here there.
Awww
I just watched Salma Hayek in a movie with Alec Baldwin called “Drunk Parents,” and her comic timing is impeccable. Love her!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Happy Caturday Karen! I hope that your lemon trees flourish and bear for you gorgeous fruit! I watched that Drunk Parents movie too and Salma Hayek was by far the best part! I love listening to her accent! We are headed to the lake for the weekend!
Karen says
Happy Caturday, Rachel! Have so much fun at the lake this weekend. Enjoy yourself and stay safe!
Ewa says
Oooh, super intrigued by the Byredo makeup line!
Karen says
The packaging is bananas, but in the best possible way!
Sherry says
Karen…you are so right about Salma Hayek. She is quite the comedian. I watched Drunk Parents recently, and I died laughing. My favorite line is when Salma tells Alec Baldwin that she will miss him so much when she goes to Yale, but she means jail. She is too cute!!
Karen says
I was cracking up laughing at that part, too! 🙂 Both she and Alec Baldwin have really great comic timing. I thought they played off each other really well!
Happy Saturday to you, Sherry!
Marcia says
Hi Karen. Hope your lemon trees do well. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
Karen says
Thanks, Marcia! I hope they do well, too. I can’t wait for the day I can just walk out to a tree and grab a few lemons.
Happy looong weekend to you!
Eileen says
We have both a Myer Lemon and a Eurika Lemon. They’re “dwarf” variety and are only about 8-10 feet tall. Once established, they yielded tons of fruit. We’re always giving away big bags of lemons to friends and family. My husband is from the Middle East where they use lemon in and on everything 🙂
Apropos all the celebrity releases: I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but I am so over that. There is nothing really new or innovative to get excited about. Since so much of the TV and movie filming has slowed down, I guess celebs have to make some money somehow.
Salma Hayek-Pinault is a hoot. I imagine she’s a lot of fun to be around.
Have a safe holiday weekend, everyone.
Karen says
I have a friend who was a Cosmo beauty editor and apparently Salma is really funny in person, too, and very nice!

I’m wondering what makes that an “Improved” Meyer Lemon tree. I hope it thrives for you. When it does, I’ll take some of your excess fruit. I love making Moroccan preserved lemons and Meyer lemons are the best for it.
I want some Byredo makeup just for the packaging. Is that wrong?
OMG! Those bengal kittens are so adorable! I’d love a Bengal cat, but they’re so darn expensive.
Hope you

I’m a bit disappointed that her donation is only going to be 1%. Honestly that just feels a bit like a marketing tool more than anything.
I’m always happy to see brands do good and donate to causes. But 1% is just shocking really.

That El Hub. What a good gift-giver! We wouldn’t have much with lemons here so they’re not really available (I thought it would be nice to have some dwarfs that could live in planters and come inside in the winter). Our pear trees produced so many pears this year that we would have been able to supply the neighborhood. Sadly, we didn’t get a single one because the squirrels ate EVERY.SINGLE.PEAR (and there were over 100) before they ripened. This is the first year that’s ever happened. We need a solution by next year. 🙁 Good luck with your lemons!! I hope they thrive!!
