Saturday Surfing, October 20th, 2018

October 20th, 2018 by Karen 22 Comments

Morning, kitty cat!

Short-ish Saturday Surfing today because I’m about to get Connor ready for a Halloween party at her school, and we need to work out her face painting situation, as evident by the somewhat funky monarchs there in the pic (that one on the bottom tho, ha ha!). It was a test run I did on my swatching arm with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils. Now let’s see if I can pull off something “Tabs approved” because you know how picky he is about body art.

Your reading (beauty and otherwise) for this weekend…

  • This shop in NYC’s Little Italy neighborhood sounds cute! They sell desserts and beauty products, so you can pick up a sheet mask AND a cookie on your lunch break.
  • How to rock black lipstick IRL, even if you aren’t Rihanna and it’s *not* Halloween.
  • Not that I need more lipstick, buuuuut…WANT!
  • Another royal wedding, another royal manicure featuring Essie Ballet Slippers. Side note: How do you feel about this shade? I know it’s super iconic and popular, especially with brides, but it really doesn’t excite me.
  • Speaking of nails, if you were sitting there drinking your #PSL and wishing for pumpkin spice nail decals, well…here ya go.
  • 5 ways biotech is working for the fragrance industry.
  • Actress Bella Thorne might be the cat lady-est of all CCLS because she has 19 cats! — YES, NINETEEN!
  • Let it be known that I believe black cats rock. Frankly, what did they ever do to deserve their reputation as a symbol of evil? Answer: Not a dang thing.

    Love me some black cats!

Watcha up to this weekend? If you’re looking for something terrifying to marathon on Netflix, may I suggest The Haunting of Hill House? I started it a couple days ago, and I’m already hooked AND traumatized. ?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

One of the best cats I ever had was a black kitty. Sadly lost her young but finally got another one – they are the best

I’m having trouble with Hill House. It took me like three days to get through the first episode because I was bored. I’m now on episode three. Things seemed to have picked up a bit. Where are you in the series? Should I keep going?
On the scary note, I’m trying to watch Light as a Feather on Hulu. It’s okay.
I can’t wait for the new Sabrina series on Netflix.

Did Connor have fun at her halloween party?

It takes a while to pick up! I’m into it but El Hub hates it.

Connor had so much fun, but I think that’s mostly because of the frosting on the cupcakes, ha ha ha!

I’ve been into dark lips lately. I gravitated to Fenty Beauty’s chocolate brown liquid stunna lip paint in “unveil”. The Sephora near my house is quite small and doesn’t carry the Fenty Beauty in stores (I really wanted to swatch first).

So off to my neighborhood Ulta! I bought NARS “Deborah” which seemed relatively comparable but in a cream formula (which I prefer over matte). I also found and fell in love with the NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in “Spin Me”. It’s a matte formula but the color was fantastic. It’s described as a rich red brown and holy smokes it’s dark on me. I adore how vampy/goth I look. If you aren’t sure about wearing a black lip color then I think “Spin Me” would be a good transition before you make the leap.

Thanks for all these lip color suggestions, Halley. I have one for you, too: MAC Carnivorous. Not a true black more like a deep reddish brown. Still vampy though!

Have fun at the party! You did a great test run with the 24/7. I rescued the sweetest black long hair cat named Black Jack, the most loving feral ever. As for Essie Ballet slippers I think it’s too sheer, kinda blah.

What a great name for a black cat, Diana! Love it.

What are ya up to this weekend? We got back from the party a while back (Connor had a blast!). El Hub grilled some hamburgers, we had a late lunch, and now that the baby is down for a nap I’m going to chill for a bit. 🙂

No joke-Black Jack’s feral cat mom (i did tnr her) dragged him to my doorstep in heavy rain&left him on my welcome mat! I saw her drag him by the neck. He had a bad eye infection poor guy, I swear she knew I would help. Animals are amazing!!

I saw in the comments Connor enjoyed the frosting ? Hope you enjoy your chill time tonight. It’s Sunday with Tabs day next! My hubby&I are hopping the train early to enjoy a nice fall day in NYC. Have a great Sunday xx

Over the years most of my cats have been black. When you go to the Humane Society or SPCA and they tell you the black cats are the least adopted cats, I want to adopt them all.

I wish I could adopt all the black cats. You know how wildly jealous Tabs gets, though!

Do you still have plans to capture Nibbler? lol

Nope. Don’t think I could do that to kiddo. She raised Nibbler from a kitten. While Nibs was here my asthma got worse again. Now that she’s back with the kiddo, I’m starting to breathe better in the mornings again. Kiddo had to travel for work this week, so I took turns with Dear Husband driving up there to feed her. I think I spend more time with Nibbler than Dear Hubs.
I am hatching a plot to get another horse. Or at least to ride again. A friend of mine in Gilroy is starting polo lessons and I’m thinking of driving down there to ride. My defense logic is it’s not jumping, so it’s safer. Also looking for a dressage instructor, too.

OMG I’m going to have to get to that K-Beauty/dessert shop! I went to the website and saw a pic of their chocolate chip cookie. SOLD! (And salivating.)

I think I wore Ballet Slippers in the early 2000’s for my endless French manicures. . .

Jiji is glad you’re sticking up for black cats! I just picked up a trick or treat bag from Target that’s covered in black cats. It folds into a tiny bag for portability. I’m going to buy more after Halloween to use as reusable bags!

Black cats are the best cats! My little girl is a black cat and she’s the cuddliest, sweetest kitty I’ve ever met. I also agree Ballet Slippers is booooring. It looks nice and unobtrusive so I guess it’s a good option for people who work in offices, but every time I’ve tried it myself it’s been pretty streaky/patchy, and besides, I’m always a colorful-nails fan. Also, per your comment on my comment from last week about the Sally Hansen Oil Therapy polish in Wine Therapy, it’s gorgeous and a little unusual. It’s got shimmer but it’s not a metallic, just a true gold shimmer in a deep red base, and I find it wears just as great as the rest of the line! I think it’ll be great for the holiday season.

Years ago, I adopted a black cat named Midnight (I know, so creative, haha). She was gorgeous! And a very sweet cat. I also love black cats, they are so beautiful, and beautiful souls too. My sister has a black cat who is literally the damn sweetest cat ever. Seriously. Black cats for the win!

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
