How to Not Lose Your Damn Mind When You’re Shopping for Beauty Products

May 17th, 2017 by Karen 10 Comments

Nope!

When I’m at Sephora and one of the sales associates walks up to me with an empty basket, I turn into the emoji with the crossed hands, like, NO!

Literally. So. Me.

Those baskets are my downfall, man. I can go into a Sephora with one specific item in mind, but if someone hands me a basket while I’m there, it’s suddenly, “Oh, shampoo! I definitely need a new one, and here’s an eyeliner I’ve been wanting to try, and what a pretty glitter shadow! Yup, I need that too. Now, hmm… What did I come here again for??” Seriously, those baskets are a free-for-all, and I’m throwing stuff in there like there’s no tomorrow.

So, I live and die by this beauty shopping rule: I can only go up to the cash register with whatever I can hold in my hands.

It sounds so #basic, but it’s surprisingly effective! If you, too, are prone to walking into a Sephora (or a Target or Ulta or really anyplace with shopping baskets) and going into a fugue state while beauty shopping, limit yourself to whatever you can hold in your hands. It’ll basically save you from yourself.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I use a similar trick and take the kids with me. After 10 minutes I am so annoyed of having to catch them I leave the store. No aimlessly wondering around.

I am so glad I am not the only one who does this! Even if both my hands are full, I will refuse any offer of a basket for exactly this reason. Those baskets just magically pull things into them.

Cannot believe the timing of this. Today was sale day at Harvey Nichols – finally. So…off I went, and of course, got handed over a basket…and everyone can guess what happened next. 😉

Oh boy. I spent way, way too much. :-/ Ya know, they probably should have filmed this with me in it instead: http://bit.ly/2riyymY

Well… on the bright side… got some stuff I was *dying* to have:
    – the Honeymoon palette from TF, which is every bit as amazing as I thought it would be,
    – Le Gel Coat from Chanel, which is seriously good too
    – and the TF Paradise Lust cheek duo

Also discovered a couple more unexpected things – a lipstick from Armani: Rouge Ecstasy in 102 Essenza – a light, pinky nude, which is surprisingly opaque given how creamy it is. It’s opaque enough to cover my real color, but doesn’t go on cakey and horrible…. Aaand, possibly the most luxurious deep pink I’ve ever seen – the Rouge Coco in 452 Emilienne. 🙂 Already obsessed with it!

Man, good thing some social events are coming up this weekend. Gonna be able to wear this stuff. Can’t wait!

Yup. It always baffles me to see people pushing shopping carts through Target just shoveling random stuff into the cart. I always go with a list and my own small shopping bag. Still, that doesn’t stop me from having similar experiences at Ulta and Sephora when I go in for eye makeup remover and come out $90 poorer. This past weekend I had an extremely rare experience of going into Ulta for eye makeup remover and coming out with …. only eye makeup remover! It was strange!

YES! I agree, only what one can carry. Except in Kiko the other day (first visit there ever!) when a security guard handed me one, haha. They had £1 nail polishes, plus eyeliners on sale and all these products that I had never tried before. Candyland! Bought the most fab glitter eyeliner, now I just need somewhere to wear it!

Love your hairstyle Karen! And damn… that volume! Love it!

My problem: I can hold a hell’uva lot in my hands! I just did that at Ulta – came in there for sunscreen and ended up walking out with two bottles of sunscreen (Algenist and LaRoche, two becca items (bronzer and blush) and a lipstick…..uggh….

I really, really hate it when the people at Sephora try to push those baskets into your hands. One time, an associate didn’t even wait for me to say no. She grabbed the things I had in my hands, put them in a basket and then handed me the basket. I seriously wanted to smack her with it. My main reason is because… do you have any idea how dirty those baskets are??? It goes beyond what you can see. Honestly. Of course, I smiled at her and when she turned around, I took the stuff out and made my daughter return the basket somewhere. What I should’ve done was left the store without buying anything. But yeah, I took home those things she put in the basket. Sigh. Back to shopping online…

I take my toddler. At Ulta in a carrier and since he is heavy I can only wear him for so long. I tried going in there with him loose… bad idea. He knocked down a hairspray display that I had to fix. At Target he goes in a cart and he is losing his mind within 20 minutes (unless we went to Starbucks).

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
