Makeup and Beauty Blog’s Hell-to-the-Yah List: Nov. 15

November 15th, 2008 by Karen 23 Comments

Hell-to-the-Yah! #1: Blue and Green Eyeshadow

Why did it take me so long to get on the blue and green eyeshadow train? I can’t believe I lived through my 20s only wearing beige, brown and taupe on my lids. Although I still love those neutral shades, in the last few months I’ve become obsessed with blues and greens! They set my heart a-flutter. 🙂

Hell-to-the-Yah! #2: Indian Summer in the Ess Eff Bay Area

Fall sunset in Tiburon, California

‘Twas a balmy 70 degrees today in the San Francisco Bay Area. I went for a long run around my neighborhood wearing a t-shirt and shorts — no jacket required! The sun on my skin felt heavenly.

Hell-to-the-Yah! #3: Girl Power Workout Songs

During the toughest part of my run, I listened to a playlist on my iPod named “Girl Power Workout Songs,” LOL. Totally cheesy, I know, but the songs on that list always give me an extra boost. I blasted Nelly Furtado’s Maneater during that last grueling hill and charged up it like a woman on a mission. I guarantee that if you crank this song you’ll push through that last part of your workout with everything you’ve got left.

Hell-to-the-Yah! #4: Weird Holiday Catalogues

When the holidays roll around my mailbox gets flooded with a plethora of weird catalogues! I never buy anything from them, but I still like to look through them for fun.

Mars’ Cheese Castle in Wisconsin just sent me one featuring fascinating things I’ve never seen before, like spicy sausages shaped like beer bottles and cakes made with whiskey. SO WEIRD!

Hell-to-the-Yah! #5: Morris Chestnut

Last night I watched a movie called The Perfect Holiday. It’s a cute chick/family flick starring Gabrielle Union, Queen Latifah and cutie pie Morris Chestnut.

In the last 24 hours I’ve developed a massive crush on Maury C. If we’d been in the same chemistry class in college in the late 90s, I would have wanted him to be my lab partner so I could have stared at him while he did titrations all semester long. Le sigh!

In Other MBB News

So sorry for the late post, ladies. After my run I watched a few episodes of The Tudors and then talked to El Hub for a while on the phone. Next thing I knew it was 5!

Part of the reason why I’m in a good mood is because El Hub’s coming home from Hawaii today, but I’m mostly happy because his mom’s operation went smoothly. She’s now recovering at home. Hopefully El Hub and I will both be able to go back next month to see her during the holidays. It’ll all depend on how she’s feeling.

I wanted to thank you for your positive notes and well wishes. And thank you especially for sharing stories of how your families coped when illness struck. Your stories lent me so much hope.

Have a lovely Saturday night. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

yay!! I am so happy fly you Karen I am glad the surgery was a success and that your mil was in good spirits- I will continue to keep her in my prayers during her treatments
I wish I could run [I sigh ] my trainer tries to make me run but I have no endurance instead she has me do 5 minute sprints inbetween my weight sets and even that’s a challenge LOL she thinks it has to do with my short dense fibrous muscles LOL I envy your running skills!!
I am super glad your playing with blues and greens -aren’t they fun !! My fiancé went out tonight to hang out with a friend and my dorky behind has makeup allover the bed with 2 different eyeshadow looks – one on each eye -catching up with last seasons entourage. Isn’t the Tudors awesome I love it have you seen the other boelyn girl and Elizabeth ??

    Hi Yadiq,

LOL, I do the same thing with my eye makeup when I’m experimenting. Once I answered the door and the UPS guy looked a little shocked to see one smokey eye and one very bright purple eye. 🙂

That’s great that you do weights. I haven’t been consistent over the last few months and I’ve lost a lot of muscle. Do you do free weights? Running is probably the only thing I can do! I am terrible at any sport that requires projectiles!

I got into The Tudors after reading The Other Boleyn Girl. I saw the movie but liked the book more. Both Elizabeth films are awesome. Cate Blanchette is an amazing actress.

yeah I do lots of free weights to the point I sometimes threaten to throw them at my trainers head LOL these days she wants me to do more yoga cause all the free weights and streetfighting is shortening my muscles and as women we don’t want bulk – she also wants me to cut my protein intake to stop some of the mass I have packed on – it’s a blessing and a curse to be able to gain muscle so easy it def makes losing weight really really hard on the plus I am less suceptible to injury because my muscle support my skeleton well

I guess we are never with what we have LOL

I am playing with an orange and green eyeliner combo right now the colors are blending into one another where they meet in the center on the top lid it’s kinda cute for a going out kinda eye look

    Hey Yadiq,

Yoga does amazing things for muscles. I used to take classes and I remember feeling all stretched out and lean all of the time. The only kind of yoga I can’t hang with is the one done in a hot room. Ugh! I did it once and it was awful. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. And then all the old dudes in the classes started taking off their shirts and I swear to gawd they were so hairy it was like I was in a room full of werewolves. Bluh!

OoOOoo, I love orange and green or orange and teal! I bet it looks really tropical. What lips would you pair that with? Maybe coral?

BTW, I just pulled out some Shu Palettes and had to say out loud, “Mika Shu, Mika Shu!”

Right now I am plowing through my stash and playing with some Dior palettes and watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta. I’m still trying to figure out what makeup to wear to my friend’s wedding. Now I’m now leaning to a classic cat eye.

    Hi Karen,

Glad your mother-in-law’s operation went well. I hope she continues her recovery nicely all the way.

It’s cool that you’re color brave..it’s fun..I admire it when people take risks with makeup and fashion and just simply enjoy the colors and shapes bravely. But I completey relate with your 20’s as I am a bit of a blue-eyeshadow-coward.

    Hey Karen

I’m so glad to hear that the Operation went well, thats great news!

I’ve been really slacking on my workouts (although I have had a cold and then lost my voice for a few days) and I need to come up with a good playlist for the treadmill. I think I’ll add Maneater to it – I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner!

Also, I just saw in your other comment, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”? Is that the same as The Real Housewives of Orange County because I *loved* that show!

Hope your Sunday is a good one!

Hi Karen! I’m glad that your family is doing well. My thoughts go out to all of your family during this difficult time.

I live in Wisconsin now and there are these weird cheese “chalets” along the highways. They sell cheese, meat, and cheese/meat creations. Want a 3-year cheddar shaped like a Packers helmet and then dipped in wax? I love the cheese, but I want in a rectangle shape. Am I boring?

Great to hear you MIL is doing well.

That Cargo palette is AMAZING! A cargo counter/stall thing recently appeared at my local supermarket! yeah! But I feel weird paying £20 for a palette at the supermarche!

    Hi Emme,

Thanks… I’ll pass along your good thoughts.

I still don’t have the guts to go FULL ON CRAZY with the color during the day. I’m 33, so I don’t know if I can get away with it. A pop of green liner here, a little slice of blue mascara there and that’s enough for me. 🙂

I think that when you’re ready for color it’ll just come to you!

    Hi Beth,

Thank you! I hope she recovers quickly.

Yes, girl, it’s part of the same series. It’s entertaining, but I still think I like the OC ladies a bit more because they are the originals!

Maneater is a perfect treadmill song! I dunno if you like dance music, but another one that always gets me going is a song by Kascade (he’s a DJ) called Stepping Out. What do like to listen to when you’re on the treadmill? I need some new music!

    Hi Pepper,

Thank you for your note. I really appreciate your good thoughts. 🙂

That’s so funny that you can hit up a cheese chalet at any given time! And what’s going on with the shapes? Gimme an old school triangle of cheese any old day.

    Hi Lexi,

    What a fun Saturday night!

What does your hair look like? I need to hack mine off…

And those cupcakes sound yum. I lack the willpower to eat just half. I am such a junkie for sweets. 🙂

    Hey Karen

I’ll have to keep an eye out for the Atlanta show, I don’t know if they’re showing it here yet

Lately, I’ve actually been watching TV while on the treadmill. My gym has 26 channels built in on each station which is pretty cool. It makes the time fly, but it doesn’t motivate you to go harder/faster. I’m a rocker at heart, so when I have had music on I’ve been listening to Foo Fighters, Disturbed and Stone Sour with some Nickelback and Metallica thrown in for good measure. Its fairly upbeat rock so you can run to it and because its angry it makes you want to work a bit harder. Its definitely a personal taste thing though, I’m willing to bet I’m the only girl in there rockin out while running! LOL

Thanks 🙂 It was on Saturday.
I had a great day and my mum had invited over all the family for a surprise party (I had rehearsal until 8 and when I got back home all of them were stationed in the living room).
No Lancôme presents, but I did get a gift card for Planet Parfum (where you can buy Lancôme…) so I’ll treat myself this week 🙂 Any recs?

That is great news about your mother-in-law! Hope the recovery goes just as smooth!

I was cracking up reading your list today – there’s a Mars Cheese Castle in my hometown in Wisconsin – some of my friends worked there in high school! We do love our beer and cheese in the good ‘ol ‘sconnie:)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
