So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
1. Can you dance?
I want to say “YES!” because, you know…I just want to. 🙂 I used to take dance classes back in the day, and when I was in my 20s and early 30s, you would have found me dancing until the wee hours every weekend. Now, though? GIRL! My dance skills are questionable. I mean, I can still stay on the beat, but it’s not like I’m doing anything cool while I’m moving. My arms swing, my feet shuffle, but that’s about it.
Soooo, I guess my answer is “yes, kinda. But mostly no.” Hahaha!
2. Tote bag or backpack?
Backpack, because my hands need to be free!
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
Swimming, ideally in a heated pool or a tropical sea, because I do not relish cold bodies of water.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
There’ve been so many, but the one for the infamous Razor Incident of 1999 was the worst! A stylist at a bougie SF salon hacked away at my hair with a razor like she was cutting a path through the Amazon jungle with a machete.
It was a mess. The top part of my head puffed out, and the bottom half was super flat. I ended up with a mullet that took me two years to grow out.
As you can see…I never gotten over the trauma.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
All of them, but I particularly love freesia because they’re so dainty and fragrant. Note to self: plant some freesia bulbs this year.
6. Fringe or feathers?
Fringe. Why not?
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
It was in middle school in the late ’80s. I had this whole “hair bear” situation happening, and the prep work for it was INTENSE. Every morning, I curled my bangs, then cemented them into place with layer upon layer of hairspray.
It was huge! I swear, a strong breeze would have carried me away. It took about 30 minutes every day to do. All the girls did something similar, though. I remember what a big deal it was to go to school without your bangs, LOL! So silly. I should’ve just taken that time to sleep in.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
100% adequate!
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
Totally on point, because I get a lot of practice assisting all of the neighborhood cats.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Danielle says
1. Can you dance? Yes, but only in private.
2. Tote bag or backpack? Tote
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? Neither, but I like to power walk.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? Omg…. I had wings (the sides of my hair stuck up) for FIVE or SIX YEARS. That’s how long it took me to grow out that haircut. (Still traumatized. I was 6 years old when it happened.)
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? Lilacs and rhododendron
6. Fringe or feathers? Neither, but fringe if I had to pick one.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? Probably when I had it long, but sort of flipped/feathered at the sides. It took forever to style. Short hair is difficult because you have to style it instead of putting it in a ponytail.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? Not great, but I’m trying!
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? Pretty good- I lost my cat about a year ago, but I still have my cat-niece (my sister’s cat) and love to spoil her with catnip and cuddles!
Karen says
Power walking is so good for your body, Danielle! I wish I would’ve figured that one out sooner. I trashed my feet by running way too many miles over too many years, and now I have a great appreciation for power walking. What brand of shoes do you wear when you do your walks?
Danielle says
Nothing fancy- New Balance 577 v5 Sneakers.
Karen says
OK, thanks. I’ve been asking people lately because I’ve been looking into walking shoes with lots of arch support!
ericca says

8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? still poor. e for effort
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? ajax does not assist . he is the sultan of leisure and expects to be treated as such . but my skills have also been poor too he has to wake me up to feed him. he has now starting laying beside me letting out little meows. he even nipped me on the butt because i was studying too long in his opinion
Karen says
Car dancing is a legit skill!
P.S. Ajax sounds like a demanding employer. Tabs would’ve approved!
ericca says
he is a real taskmaster.
Chelsea says
1. Can you dance?
Not well!
2. Tote bag or backpack?
Tote bag because I hate having to take the whole thing off to get something out.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
I haaaaate running and am medically discouraged from doing so, definitely swimming for me.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
I had this short page boy thing when I was in late elementary / early middle school.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
Daffodils
6. Fringe or feathers?
Fringe! Feathers shed everywhere, cleanup after is terrible. (I’ve helped friends with a lot of burlesque shows, feathers are a pain).
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
I’ve never had a truly high maintenance hairstyle. In middle school I used to do these buns with colored pencils stuck through them that I definitely got made fun of for.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
Pretty good!
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
I’m sure Jiji thinks they could use improvement but pretty darn good! They discontinued his wet food though ?
Karen says
WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT! How dare they discontinue his wet food? Rosie is very particular about her nibbles, and if this happened I honestly don’t know what we would do!
Suzanne C says
1. Can you dance?
No, I haven’t danced in years, other than many sanity-saving Impromptu Dance Parties with my girls as they were growing up. (One of the best ways of dealing with a bored and/or grumpy kid!)
2. Tote bag or backpack?
Tote bag, preferably with a cute graphic.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
Swimming.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
A bad post-breakup perm situation.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
Azaleas. They’re the sign around here that Spring is just around the corner.
6. Fringe or feathers?
No. But I will indulge in a little glitter now and then.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
I don’t know how to describe it, but it was very short on the sides and back, a little longer on top. Cute, but so. much. work.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
Non-existent. I’m proud if I successfully manage a smear of cream shadow and some mascara.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
I don’t do cats. But I am a well-trained dog assistant.
Karen says
Improv dance parties are the best. 🙂 We did one out in our front yard last week! Have a great week, Suzanne!
Kim says
Hey, heeeeeeyyyyyy! It’s actually Monday and I’m doing the Monday Poll! 😉
1. Can you dance? Depends who you ask. I think I’m fine, but not fancy. Two of my friends call me (and another friend) the Bad Bookends and push us to the outside or BACK while they do their thing. Jerks. 🙂
2. Tote bag or backpack? Backpack. Everything seems to slip off my shoulders.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? If all my joints and parts were 100%, I’d rather run. But, these days, I’d have to choose swimming (though I wouldn’t prefer it).
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? Probably my 6th grade, short, boy-cut that feathered all around to a duck’s butt in the back.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? I’m going to be boring and say tulips.
6. Fringe or feathers? Fringe.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? Same time frame as you and similar style. Lots of mousse – the copper tinted was a fave – then teased my bangs sky high (with a side part), diffused the rest of it for max curl on my spiral perm and finished with a can of hairspray. Every. Day. HAHA! I remember being mortified when we had to take sports group pics on days we had swimming because my hair was so embarrassingly flat. Now, when I look at the pics, I’m like “oh, hey, regular looking hair!”.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? I would guess p*ss poor.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? I think I’m pretty strong with the assisting. I have three, often-demanding bosses to keep me on my toes.
Efrain says
1. Can you dance?
Let’s say yes, but I haven’t practiced in a while (unless Kpop videos count). On the other hand, my sister is a natural dancer.
2. Tote bag or backpack?
For everyday backpack and tote for going out.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
Swimming even though I can’t swim a lot.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
Once an aunt cut my hair and it didn’t end up nice.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
I actually don’t have one.
6. Fringe or feathers?
On clothes, fringes.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
I’ve always been low maintenance with hair, maybe when it was long it was more work due to braiding.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
I’ve just put eyeliner, and I think it’s ok but I still struggle to find a cat eye that suits me completely.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
Well, I take it “to walk” daily so I’ll say Zeus is going to give me a bonus.
Tatiana says
1. Can you dance? Define dance. I’m taking Zoom ballet from the SF Ballet. Other than that, nope.
2. Tote bag or backpack? Tote bag. Unless I’m hauling around books, then a backpack.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? Neither. My knees are shot from running and the cat inside of me hates water.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? The one I got before lockdown. It was choppy and uneven (went to a new stylist) and I hated it. I had an appointment with my regular stylist to fix it and that got cancelled because of lockdown. Almost a year later and 6 to 8 inches longer, I finally got to see my usual stylist to have it all cut off and I feel like me again.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? Calla lilies, lilacs, hyacinths and freesias.
6. Fringe or feathers? Fringe.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? In college I had a perm to give me a wave, but if I didn’t set it on rollers it would become a kinky mess.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? Non-existent. I’ve never done cat eyeliner.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? Dear Husband says I’m a cat magnet because every time we go for a walk at least one cat runs up, meowing and begging for attention. He says it never happens when he goes alone. I need to brush up on my cat assistant skills because Dear Daughter got accepted to grad school and she’s moving across country and has decided to leave Nibbler with me and DH.
Jennifer Emmett says
Lately I find myself waking up on Mondays looking forward to the poll!! So, yay that’s today!
1. Can you dance? Probably not but that’s not gonna stop me if I hear some LL Cool J.
2. Tote bag or backpack? Sassy tote!
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? Swimming sounds so lovely right now, I want to do that!
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? Thinking I was improving my lewk I cut actual sideburns. So. Bad.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? Crocus, because they are some of the first around Colorado.
6. Fringe or feathers? I’m putting fringe on that afore mentioned tote bag.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? Those darn sideburns…
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? Good with the right eye, awesome with the left.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? Hopefully good! I try to donate to as many rescues and feeders and TNR folks as I can. I really need to get back into the volunteer force!
Eileen says
1. Can you dance? Not really although I love to “move ‘n groove” in private.
2. Tote bag or backpack? Tote. I’ve never cared for the city version of backpacks. They just don’t fit in with my needs or style. The last time I used a backpack was hiking along the Crest Trail but that is obviously a much different type of backpack.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? I love to swim but there are times when the need and desire to just run seizes me. My husband thinks I’m nuts when we’re out walking the dog and suddenly I break out running. LOL
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? Back in the day I wore my hair in a feathery layered style like Farrah Facett’s. When I finally decided to move on to something else, I had a gazillion layers to grow out.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? Oh dear! Too many to choose. I love flowers be they cultivated or wild.
6. Fringe or feathers? Feathers
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? It was that Farrah Fawcett do. Keeping the layers and curl on point was just too much work and time spent getting trims.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? Excellent. I started wearing eyeliner in the late 50’s so a cat eye comes naturally to me.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? I don’t have a kitty, but my beautiful husky with her black rimmed blue eyes is my smoky eye inspiration 🙂
Ewa says
1. Can you dance?
I’d like to think so, but probably not.
2. Tote bag or backpack?
Tote! Especially with a cute graphic or a nice color, currently it’s a silver one.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
Swimming. Running is torture.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
I got a backyard cut a while ago, it was really bad. My curly hair was brushed out and cut dry, I should have known…
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
I love freesias as well, but also daphne and sweet pea flowers. Basically I am ruled by my sense of smell.
6. Fringe or feathers?
Fringe?
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
I have curly hair, so high maintenance is its natural state.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
Haven’t tried recently, so prob a little rusty.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
Excellent! My cat rules with an iron paw, so I must be at the top of my game at all times.
Susan C. says
1. Can you dance?
Used to, but word to the wise: If you don’t use it, you lose it!
2. Tote bag or backpack?
Tote bag.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming?
Swimming.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out?
The bad body wave perm. It just looked ridiculous on me.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers?
Cherry blossoms!
6. Fringe or feathers?
Let’s go with fringe for a swingy ‘70s look.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle?
Back in high school I had shorter hair. No matter how I styled it, one nights’ sleep on it made it oddly lumpy. Long hair is much easier; even if it just hangs there it looks halfway decent.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days?
Nonexistent.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills?
Much better. I am currently petless but manage to cater well to the exacting demands of dogs and cats.
Pam O'Donnell says
1. I can dance great after I have some vodka?
2. Backpack, I hate having my bags falling off my shoulder.
3. I would of said running until I tore my hamstring a couple of years ago. Swimming for me is floating or relaxing in the pool. Not exercise but enjoyable!
4. Worst haircut must of been when I was young. My mom would always cut my hair short because I had a lot of thick wavy hair she didn’t know what to do with. She gave me a short boy cut and I wouldn’t take my hat off for weeks! That must be why my hair is now 1/2 way down my back, lol
5. My favorite spring flower is from our crepe myrtle tree in our front yard. Vibrant pink blooms, so pretty.
6. Fringe!
7. Highest maintenance cut was when I had Sienna Miller’s short cut on my slightly curly hair. A lot of flat ironing to get that look!
8. No cat eye for me unfortunately. My lids are too hooded to pull that off.
9. My 2 cats have mad skills at waking me up these days! They scream outside my bedroom door until they hear me move?♀️
E.D. says
1. Can you dance? I’m mediocre at best.
2. Tote bag or backpack? Tote bag. Backpacks are for school kids.
3. Would you rather go running or swimming? Running, I’m not a strong swimmer.
4. Worst haircut you ever grew out? I’ve had several (curly hair), but the worst was in 5th grade that ended up being a puffball/Brillo pixie I got because I didn’t speak up soon enough. That took a solid four years to grow out.
5. One of your favorite spring flowers? Lily of the valley
6. Fringe or feathers? Really neither, but if I had to choose – fringe.
7. What was your highest maintenance hairstyle? All of them? My hair only looks decent with a curly cut and a fair amount of high-end product. The actually styling is the easiest part.
8. How are your cat eyeliner skills these days? They have always been nonexistent. Anything other than tightlining the upper lashes with a pencil or shadow looks ridiculous on me.
9. And how about your cat (as in the animal) assisting skills? Probably decent, although we don’t have a cat at the moment.
