So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!)
Broccoli (you can do so much with it), spinach (like broccoli it’s super flexible), bok choy, napa cabbage and green beans.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”?
First thing on the list is to invite my parents and brother over to spend the night so we can all just chill, eat pizza and watch a couple movies.
I’ve also decided that once the world starts really and truly opening up again, I’m going to wear sequins everywhere. All over the damn place. To the grocery store, to the library, to the park. SEQUINS EVERYWHERE!
3. What mascara are you wearing these days?
Bite Beauty’s new one has been in the rotation as of late.
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen?
Pencil liner. That way I can also wear it on my waterline. ?
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid?
Crayon!
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake?
There’s a bakery in town called Creekside that makes a delicious, light-as-air vanilla cake with whipped cream and strawberries. YUM! They’re my go-to for birthday cakes.
7. How good are you at hemming pants?
Well…not good at all! You’d think it would be a skill I’d place a high priority on since almost every pair of pants I’ve ever owned has needed to be hemmed, but alas, no.
Mind you, I can make a borderline functional hem in a pinch… Borderline though.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman?
I honestly haven’t a clue. It may have been sometime in the early 2000s? I vaguely recall going someplace snowy with El Hub early in our relationship and being very grumpy while we were there because I was so cold, LOL!
9. What’s your signature makeup look?
Some variation of smokey eyes with a nude lip, but that might change in 2021! You just never know.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!) Chinese broccoli, broccoli, bok choy, tatsoi, napa cabbage (because kimchi!), wild aster leaves (Dear Daughter picked this one out at the Korean grocer for me), kale, chard, spinach, romaine and every other salad green.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”? IF this is all over this year, I’m planning on going to Japan or Korea or Singapore or Australia.
3. What mascara are you wearing these days? I found a sample of Clinique High Impact mascara in my stash and I’ve been wearing that. It gives me fluffy, feathery lashes which I like.
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen? Pencil. It’s just easier for me.
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid? Crayon. Never really liked liquid lipstick.
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? Dear Daughter! But if she’s too busy to bake Geri’s Cakes, even though they’re not quite what they once were.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? I’m short. I’m a pro at this. I’ll be honest though, I hate doing it myself. Most of the time I just have it done in store.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? Can’t remember but I’m gonna guess it was when Dear Daughter was very young and we were visiting family at Christmas time.
9. What’s your signature makeup look? Mascara, brown or gray liner and a mauve or plum toned “my lips but better” lip color.
Raining up your way? They kept predicting rain around here but it never really showed up. So even though it was predicted for today I went for a walk because there was a bit of sun peaking through the clouds. About half way through it started to drizzle. By the time I got back home it was really raining and I was soaked. I barely crossed paths with anyone. It was so wonderful!
Karen says
Yes! Raining for most of the morning but now it’s clearing up. It sounds like you had a lovely walk, although I remember the last time I trotted about in wet socks for fun. (I did a Bay to Breakers one year in the rain and that was sufficient enough to traumatize me for the rest of my life, LOL!) Did you go hiking, or just around and about the neighborhood?
Tatiana says
I’ve never gotten up the nerve to do Bay to Breakers. Good for you. Running in wet socks is never fun. Just went around the neighborhood. I like looking at all the houses being built or rebuilt.
Karen says
I did a few of them in the ’90s and had a great time! They were always super fun and very silly. The last one I did was in 2012 and the vibe was totally different! Not nearly as crazy and not as many people. If you ever do get the chance to do one (will people ever do races again?!), walk it. It’s need to be able to travel down all the iconic streets of the city.
Random but there was a very brief window a few weeks back when El Hub and I thought we might have to move down to the peninsula and so I started looking at houses and schools and WHOA. The real estate down there is CRAZY!
Tatiana says
My knees are in no condition to run a race anymore. If I was to do Bay to Breakers I’d probably just walk the course with Dear Husband on a non-race day. We’d probably break it up over a couple of weekends, too.
Houses and schooling in this area is nuts. If my father-in-law hadn’t left us his house when he died, we probably wouldn’t have the house we have right now. It also helps that we bought into the market 30 years ago, when people said, “Wow this is crazy it can’t last.” And houses were a third of the price they are now.
But hey, every now and then I see Steph or Ayesha Curry in the grocery store or around town.
Karen says
My feet are no longer in the condition to run, period! I’ve been looking into Hoka One Ones, have you heard of them? They’re a line of workout shoes that people with feet/knee issues seem to love. I don’t plan on running in the future (I think that time has passed), but I would like to still be able to do long walks.
Anywho, you should totally do that Bay to Breakers walk! The best part is going through the park, aka my old stomping grounds.
I was looking at houses in the Santa Clara area and the only truly “affordable” (air quotes) places seemed to be over-priced tear downs that were on the verge of falling into the ground! LOL!
Tatiana says
I’ve never heard of Hoka One Ones. I’ll have to check them out.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about the real estate situation in this area. When I think I want a different house I cry. When I think how we’ll make out like bandits if we leave this area, I laugh. I saw a listing before the holidays for a 980 sq. ft. cottage for $1.98 mil. Laugh or cry, you tell me. It’s insanity. Every time I cross the Dumbarton and pass by Facebook I curse at them.
Karen says
I know a few people who swear by them! El Hub got a pair recently and loves the cushioning. They’re pricy but I’m thinking of making the jump because apparently my feet hate me now. I’m thinking about either the Clifton or the Rincon 2.
OMG, I know! I was looking at houses in other parts of the country and it’s amazing what you can get for the price of a teardown here!

Karen says
Thanks for filling out the poll today, Rachel. Happy new year to you and your family!

4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen? Pencil
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid? Crayon
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? When I was in NW Indiana, my favorite bakery was Butterfingers. Every thing they made was sinfully delicious. Now that I am in Arizona, My Daddy’s Italian Bakery and Cafe has some fancy goodies that I enjoy.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? The bomb! Alas, it is a necessary skill because I am vertically challenged.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? 12 years ago, when we left the Chicago area.
9. What’s your signature makeup look? Light foundation, just enough color on the cheeks to keep me from looking dead, nude eye shades with brown liner and black mascara, a little defining of the browns, and bold lips.
Thank you for a great site that I always enjoy, every day, since its inception. ?
Karen says
Thank you, Lisa. That is so nice of you to say!
Happy new year and may 2021 bring you all the good things.
Eileen says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!) Seeing as I’m a vegetarian, I love vegetables in general. My preference, though, is for veggies I can eat raw. That being said, I’ll say my favorite green is lettuce–of all kinds.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”? Catch up with a million and one in person visits. since I’m a hugger by nature, that will means lots of hugs and kisses. We do what we have to do, but I think Zoom pales in comparison and always leaves me feeling a bit let down.
3. What mascara are you wearing these days? Bobbie Brown Smokey Eye in black.
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen? Most days, I reach for a pencil. I’m partial to Chanel or Sisley for pencils and Tom Ford for a pen.
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid? Crayon. I never really embraced the liquid lipstick trend despite having had a few nice ones over the years.
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? Viktor Bênes or Paris.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? Very good. When I was in junior high school (grades 7-9), all girls had to take a sewing class. I used to sew almost all my clothes myself.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? Probably more than 30 years ago. When my sons were tiny tots, we would visit my grandparents who lived near Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. Sledding, ice skating, snow ball fights, and building snowmen were always on the to do list.
9. What’s your signature makeup look? Nowadays its more neutral than it was pre-pandemic. I gravitate towards a smokey or misty look for my eyes and a tinted lip balm. That’s it for most days because of masks. I’m beginning to feel more optimistic and therefore more colorful so I anticipate adding more color to my looks come spring.
Karen says
Eileen! How interesting that you should mention lettuce, because I’d always felt kinda “eh” about it until last summer, which is when El Hub grew romaine lettuce on our deck. It was the tastiest, most flavorful lettuce I’d ever eaten. I’d go back there and tear off a few leaves and have a fresh salad… MAN. So good!
Eileen says
I’ve always loved garden fresh lettuces. My grandmother used to call me her little rabbit.?
Karen says
Now that I’ve had fresh lettuce I am forever changed. LOL! I just never knew that they could have so much flavor. I’m going to push for romaine and butter lettuce next summer!
Chelsea says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!)
Broccolini and spinach!
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”?

3. What mascara are you wearing these days?
Right now Lancôme Hypnose Doll Lashes!
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen?
Pen!
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid?
Crayon
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake?
Hmm. I haven’t had to buy a birthday cake in a long time. I’d probably go to a place called Plum Market – it’s a local chain kind of like Whole Foods, but it has a nice bakery.
7. How good are you at hemming pants?
Not terrible but I never have to do it. (Also I rarely wear pants!)
8. When was the last time you built a snowman?
I have NO idea. Probably babysitting in the mid 2000s?
9. What’s your signature makeup look?
A wing, mascara, brows, and a sheer seasonal lip – plummy or berry this time of year, more peachy or orangey red in the summer.
If it’s a show, an even BIGGER wing, lots of glitter on my cheeks (chunky glitter so it looks like I have glitter freckles), and a lipstick to coordinate with the costume, often a glittery one, often an orangey red.
Karen says
GREAT idea to give lots of hugs. I’m doing the same.
Jennifer Emmett says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!) chard all sautéed up. And zucchini, but I call it doopkini because my cat Uma’s nickname is Doop and you know…
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”? Maskless yoga!
3. What mascara are you wearing these days? Karity Bold Mood. Chunky rather than feathery lashes.

My cat Rosie has so many random nicknames so I totally get you!
Nikki Wogoman says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!) Green beans.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”? I intend to put on a red lipstick the second our governor declares that it’s safe for Ohio to stop wearing masks!

5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid? Whichever has the shade I’m looking for to go with a particular look.
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? I go to my local Kroger and buy cupcakes.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? I’ve never done it.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? I don’t know if I’ve ever done this either!
9. What’s your signature makeup look? I do too many different things with makeup to really have a signature look!
Karen says
Happy new year, Nikki!
CL says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!)
None, really. I can tolerate broccoli, spinach, celery, and lettuce.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”?
Travel abroad, if my health allows. I’ve promised myself for years that I will fly first-class if I ever get to go to Europe (I don’t think I can take 6 or more hours in anything other than first class seating – my veins and nervous system couldn’t take it). I’ve never flown first-class anywhere; it’s a bucket-list thing.
3. What mascara are you wearing these days?
I’m trying out some samples I got. The Milk Kush one seems pretty good.
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen?
I like the Physician’s Formula liquid pen.
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid?
Liquid, generally.
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake?
Never bought a birthday cake, so I don’t know.
7. How good are you at hemming pants?
Okay. I do this by hand as I’ve never really been taught to use a sewing machine.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman?
If you’re talking about a decent, full-size snowman, probably 1969 (yes, I’m that old). At that time I lived in California, and we drove up into the mountains to play in the snow one year. Where I currently live, it’s not really possible to build anything but a tiny snowman (we never get more than 6 inches of snow at a time; it’s usually less than 2 inches), unless you have about one acre from which to roll the snow up into a large ball. My lot’s not big enough for that.
9. What’s your signature makeup look?
Tinted moisturizer, mascara (not heavy), light pink blush, light pink or mauve gloss or lipstick.
Karen says
Hope you had a good Monday, CL. Happy New Year!
Amy says
1. Your favorite green vegetables? (Yes, you can name more than one!)
One of my favorite summer soups to make is green gazpacho. Cucumbers, parsley, green pepper (which I normally dislike, but it doesn’t stand out in this recipe) and a few other green veg blended with gazpacho trimmings (old bread, garlic, etc…I also have a white almond gazpacho recipe that’s so, so good, but it’s not green so don’t get me started!). In winter, I melt chard into nearly everything.
2. Something you plan to do this year when “this is all over”?
Wear lipstick every day. Visit my Mom on the east coast. Travel.
3. What mascara are you wearing these days?
A layer of Kosas (gentle on lashes) followed by a layer of L’Oreal (good lift).
4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen?
Pencil. Smudges better.
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid?
Crayon. I love those chubby Clinique pencils, though my last one wore to a nub awhile ago!
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake?
It varies a lot! The past few years, Baskin Robbins or Mitchell’s! My teenager loves ice cream cake.
7. How good are you at hemming pants?
Quite good. My mother sewed all our clothes and made sure I had sewing lessons in high school. Actually doing it is another matter, though!
8. When was the last time you built a snowman?
Probably a few years ago.
9. What’s your signature makeup look?
These days, “I showered.” Normally, though, dewy skin with peach or tan blush, subtly defined eyes, and ideally an interesting lip.

4. Eyeliner — pencil or pen? Pencil.
5. Lipstick — crayon or liquid? Crayon!
6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? There’s a bakery in town called “Frank’s” and their cream filling is so good I would take a bath in it. Plus their cakes are delicious and don’t have that plastic grocery store taste.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? Ha! Terrible.
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? Two years ago when we went to the snow.
9. What’s your signature makeup look? I don’t wear much, I’m a stay at home mom, but when I do wear it, blush, brows, a little highlighter, and a lip.

6. Where do you go if you have to buy someone (or yourself) a birthday cake? Oh gosh, it’s rare I purchase bday cakes. I guess Nothing Bundt Cakes.
7. How good are you at hemming pants? Not that great. It works, but don’t look at it closely – ha!
8. When was the last time you built a snowman? Absolutely cannot remember. Probably when I was a kid. You know what I’ve never done? Made a snow angel!!!

Hopefully get married? We have a date, church and photographer. Nothing else since everything is closed and we still don’t know how many/if any guests we’ll be able to have.

7. How good are you at hemming pants? My sewing skills are subpar. I don’t believe we have a functional sewing machine so I do any small repairs (badly) by hand. I think the last time I did any kind of “serious” sewing was in Home Ec in the 8th grade. That’s not a joke!
