Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 643

September 14th, 2020 by Karen 29 Comments

take it easy mug

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. 🌻

    1. Last show you binged and loved?

Ted Lasso on Apple TV. It stars Jason Sudeikis, who — fun fact — is a solid basketball player in his own right. The show is about an acclaimed collegiate American football coach who moves to England when he’s given the chance to coach a professional football (as in soccer!) team there. It’s got a lot of what we like to call in our house “potty talk,” a.k.a. “lazy language,” a.k.a. “four-letter words,” but I really like the characters, and I love the overall optimistic feel of the show. The main characters, shockingly (for a show in this day and age), continuously choose to be kind. It’s very refreshing.

    2. Last thing you drank?

I just took a sip of Nestle Pure Life Protect in Blackberry, which I got as a sample with my usual monthly water bottle delivery. It has zinc and is supposed to maintain a normal functioning immune system? I dunno… It tastes alright. Actually, it tastes terrible. Like water with a semi-rotten blackberry in it. LOL! I’m not loving it, but it’s here, it’s open, it’s cold, and I’m drinking it.

    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy?

One was when Connor Claire was about two or three. I had just put her down for the night, and she was there in her crib underneath the covers, looking up at me very sweetly. She has lullabies that play in her room every night, and she started singing one of the lullabies while it was playing… She just lay there, looking up at me, singing. 😊

    4. A concert you’ll never forget?

Oh! — easily, Janet Jackson at the Shoreline Amphitheater in 1994 with my friend Jen. It was outdoors, and we had decent seats. We danced and screamed the whole time. SO. FUN.

    5. Something that people often get wrong about you?

LOL… My age? I don’t know if it still happens as much as it used to, but back in the day people would always assume I was younger than I really am. When I worked as a legal secretary in my 20s, I would often be asked if I was one of the college interns, hahaha. If I’d only known how fleeting *that* season in my life would be, hahaha!

    6. A favorite movie?

There are so many, but I really do love Clueless.

    7. What are you deeply grateful for right now?

My education, because I was just telling Connor that there are countries where many girls aren’t even allowed to attend school, and I’m deeply grateful to have had the chance to finish high school and go on to college.

    8. Something happens, and you’re called upon to be brave, but all you feel is fear. What’s the first thing you do?

Put my hand on my belly, and take a few big, deep breaths. Then I repeat to myself, either out loud or in my head, “I know I can do this.” And I say it over and over again.

    9. What shoes are you wearing today?

My white Nikes, baby! El Hub calls them my “nursing shoes,” but whatever. I wear them all the time because they go with everything!

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

    1. Last show you binged and loved?
The Boys! I thought it was cheesy-looking but what a story arc. I never read the comics and I understand the producers of the TV show took artistic liberties with it to make it relatable to 2020. Great job all around.

    8. You’re called upon to be brave, but all you feel is fear. What’s the first thing you do?

    1. Last show you binged and loved? I just got caught up with “Lovecraft Country”. Such a bizarre show but I’ve been sucked in. LOL

    2. Last thing you drank? I just finished a decaf Nespresso lungo.

    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy? Seeing the dog asleep under the tree, lying on her back with all four legs sticking straight up. I don’t know how she can sleep that way but she does. I smile because she looks so silly but it also gladdens my heart because she is secure and feels protected.

    4. A concert you’ll never forget? I’ll never forget the first time The Beatles performed in LA in the mid-sixties. I’ve been to some incredible concerts (nothing beats “living music”) but for the force of energy generated by the audience, nothing will ever beat that moment when will ever compare to the moment that the announcer said, “Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.” The stadium went wild!

    5. Something that people often get wrong about you? Hmmm. . . I’d have to think about that. Of course I’ve had misunderstandings with people, but in general, people know who and what I’m about. I’m pretty straightforward.

    4. A concert you’ll never forget?
The Rolling Stones. Thursday, September 8, 2005. My First Unsupervised Concert®. Fifteen years of age. Warm late summer evening.

My friend Spewgie wore the t-shirt I made for her. In fact, she was kind of inundated with people coming up to her before the concert asking her where she got it.

At the time there was an advertising campaign sponsored by the American Dairy Council. got milk? Commercials with a photograph of a grinning celebrity with a milk “mustache”.

So. Determined the distinctive font was Phenix American. Printed it to clear acetate instead of paper and silkscreened it on a black tee.

    got mick?

Now here comes the good part.

    Friday, September 9, 2005. 10:30 AM CDT.

The next morning still in the afterglow of the concert, we went to the art museum because some of the girls had never been there and we were spending the day doing touristy things. While I was backing up to get a better look at a statue, I almost bumped into someone.

    IT WAS MICK JAGGER!

My little darling. ❤️ Doki doki.

    Our eyes made meaningful contact.

But before I could pop the question and ask him to marry me, the guy in charge of the museum and a couple of guards whisked him away. “Ah! Sir Michael! A fellow Londoner!”

In retrospect I should have bumped into him because that would have been a cute ‘icebreaker’. Or ran after them and tackled him.

    5. Something that people often get wrong about you?
My nationality is USA. I was born here.
    6. A favorite movie?
    The General starring Buster Keaton.

    1. Last show you binged and loved? Oh, gosh so many since shelter in place. On Netflix Giri/Haji, Crash Landing On You, The Mandalorian, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. We’re watching the NBA Playoffs, too. Since the Warriors aren’t in it, we cheering for any team that will beat the ones we want eliminated.

    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy? Dear Daughter and Dear Husband both trying to be the first to open and assemble the Concept2 rower I bought. I loved watching them trip all over themselves. While I had to correct some of the assembly mistakes, because I actually read the directions. It was cute. 4. A concert you’ll never forget? Uh… I know I’ve been to concerts, but none of them has really stuck with me. But a ballet I’ll never forget is Houston Ballet’s “Murmurations”. I was crying at the end of that ballet because it was the MOST BEAUTIFUL ballet I have ever witnessed.

Ok, I put my email in at the beginning of April for that rower. I think they’re actually producing them again, so go to Rogue Fitness and ask them to email alert you for one when they come in. I got model D (home version). The ones they have in my gym are Model E which are a little heavier and have a slightly higher seat rail, but also about $150-$200 more. Also, keep checking Amazon. I keep seeing them pop up there every now and then. But keep an eye on the price, because there has been a lot of price gouging on Amazon these days.

IT’S GONNA HAPPEN. I WILL IT!!!!

For now, though, please enjoy a good sweat session in my honor. LOL!

Oh, and I have to say, I can only really row decently if I’m next to someone who knows what they’re doing, because that way I can match their body positioning and their cadence. I had a few friends in my HIIT class who were rowers (like real deal ones), and they were the ones I was always trying to sit next to because THEY DID NOT PLAY. lol! I miss the gym so much.

Yeah, I miss the gym too. Sorta. I miss going and working out. I don’t miss some of the other trainers who had issues with space even before this whole virus mess. I have to admit I miss the gym I worked out in a few years ago. I had lots of friends there and the owner did a good job of building comradery. But the landlord put him on a month to month and kept raising the rent every month, so the owner closed up shop. So I just followed one of my trainers to another gym.
I miss going to my daughters CrossFit gym every now and then and working out with her. Her gym is really friendly and it’s a challenge keeping up with my 20 something kid. But I’m not about to join a gym that takes me 25 minutes to get to when there’s no traffic.
There are tons of videos on rowing form on YouTube. If you find one of those you can mirror them. I’m not a natural either, but I kept at it and I keep taking all the advice I can to improve my form and cadence.

    2. Peanut Butter whiskey.
    3. Picking and applying my lipstick for the day. A simple thing that just brings me joy and connects me with myself.
    4. I haven’t been to very many. But I did get to see Macklemore for free last Fall and it felt like church. I loved it.
    5. Ooo, good question! The only thing I can think of is people tend to think I weigh less than I do. I lift a lot so I’m heavy for my size. Not that my weight comes up a lot…I guess another thing is my cultural heritage? I’m white and grew up white and pass as white and culturally I’m white, but my dad’s family is Hispanic and is from Mexico AND Spain. I wish I kept my Spanish maiden name. I feel like I lost that part of me when I changed it after marriage. Now I wear hoop earrings almost exclusively to help me feel connected to my Latina side. And I’m obsessed with Dia de los Muertos. It is such a beautiful holiday and I started celebrating it a couple of years ago.
    6. EVER AFTER. So freaking good. I think about it at least once a week. That movie has impacted me more than I care to admit.
    7. Just today as I served my family dinner I felt so grateful that I’m able to put food on the table for my babies. We are so fortunate to be food secure. <3
    8. Hyperventilate!
    9. I wore my red sneakers from Walmart. 😀

Jaclyn, can you change your name so your maiden name is your MIDDLE name? Then you can use it whenever you want to. (Also… PB whiskey?!?!)

    1. Last show you binged and loved? My 14 year old daughter and I just finished “The Office”, me for the first time, her for the fourth. It is SO good! So so so good!
    2. Last thing you drank? The Aldi store brand of sparkling water, Belle Vie, the original one.
    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy? I have four pugs, and they drive me insane, but in the evenings they’ll all lay on me and next to me on the sofa, and sleep.
    4. A concert you’ll never forget? I’m not a big concert person, but I saw Tommy Page with Linear and Sweet Sensation in 199o. 14 year old me loved him with everything I had.
    5. Something that people often get wrong about you? Nothing really, I am an open book!
    6. A favorite movie? Shawshank Redemption.
    7. What are you deeply grateful for right now? That I don’t live where it burns. I have some friends and family members who have been evacuated because of the fires and I don’t have to worry about that. It is awful.
    8. You’re called upon to be brave, but all you feel is fear. What’s the first thing you do? I think about my hero, Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia, and she said that it’s okay to be afraid, do it anyway and the confidence will follow.
    9. What shoes are you wearing today? None! I’m a SAHM so it’s been barefoot all day!

    1. Last show you binged and loved?
Since I got a regionless portable Blu-ray player a few months ago, I’ve finally been able to crack open my Entourage complete series Blu-ray set (I don’t remember whether the disk seller messed up or I did, but I accidentally got the British disks).
    2. Last thing you drank?
I just had a glass of California Raspberry Gold Peak tea.
    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy?
When I work on one of my custom doll projects, everything comes together just right, and I post the finished photo to Instagram to finally show the world!
    4. A concert you’ll never forget?
I’ve actually had several interesting concert experiences, but I think the big one has to be Feb. 27, 2013, Muse at Cincinnati’s US Bank Arena during the 2nd Law World Tour. I’d won tickets with meet-and-greet access from a local radio station (the 1st and last time I’ve ever won anything significant!) and my cousin and I got to meet the band! They were just the sweetest British guys, and Matt Bellamy even apologized for not being able to spend more time with the fans!
Another one is that I saw Fitz and the Tantrums at a Columbus ampitheater (currently called PromoWest) in 2012 and after the concert, the band parked themselves in the merch tent and wouldn’t leave until every fan who wanted to had a chance to say hi! I’m especially happy for their recent success because they were so nice-vocalists Fitz and Noelle greeted me like we’d known each other forever!
    5. Something that people often get wrong about you?
Probably my personality. I’m rather quiet in my everyday life, so people tend to think I’m shy (nope-just quiet) or prudish (rough language doesn’t offend me nearly as much as might be assumed-see question #1!).
    6. A favorite movie?
I change it too often to have a favorite, but Disnerd (with Princess emphasis) that I am, I watched Brave recently and really liked it.
    7. What are you deeply grateful for right now?
That I’m able to work in relative safety as long as I wear a mask and clean my hands frequently.
    8. You’re called upon to be brave, but all you feel is fear. What’s the first thing you do?
This isn’t anything major, but last week I had an important work meeting and got nervous. My makeup look of the day was based on one Salma Hayek had worn in Iman’s book The Beauty of Color, so before the meeting I stopped in the restroom, looked in the mirror, and told myself that if I’d copied her makeup look I could channel her confidence too. It worked!
    9. What shoes are you wearing today?
I was wearing dark purple distressed Blowfish sneakers earlier today, but since I got home I’ve just been wearing my pink Disney Princess no-show socks with an almost anime-style drawing of Rapunzel on them.

Happy Tuesday! You totally cracked me up with your review of the Blackberry water. HAHA!

    1. Last show you binged and loved? I really like Lucifer for a bit of light entertainment.
    2. Last thing you drank? Water.
    3. A snapshot of an ordinary moment in your life that brings you real joy? Pretty much any time I’ve snuggled and laughed with the fellas.
    4. A concert you’ll never forget? I’m one of the rare people who just doesn’t enjoy concerts. I’ve been to several but none were particularly memorable for me.
    5. Something that people often get wrong about you? Before I lived in athletic leisurewear, it used to be that I was much girlier than I am. Then they’d see me play a sport, etc, and be surprised to learn that I’ve always been a super-competitive, keep up with the boys kind of gal. 😉
    6. A favorite movie? LA Confidential.
    7. What are you deeply grateful for right now? Everything about my current circumstances. I’m very blessed to be a productive member of society, living comfortably and surrounded by the best friends and family in the world. <3
    8. You’re called upon to be brave, but all you feel is fear. What’s the first thing you do? You know I love my Nike…. Just do it. 🙂
    9. What shoes are you wearing today? Black Nike Vomero Zoom 14; my daily driver.

Happy Tuesday to you too! Speaking of athletic leisurewear, my friend/HIIT teacher gave me a coupon code for Athleta and I bought some (surprise, surprise), black leggings. BECAUSE I NEEDED ANOTHER PAIR. Hahahahaha!

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
