So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. 🌻
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces?
Nope. But I have friends who have (Army and Air Force), and my dad was in the Navy.
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike?
Mostly me, since I was left to my own devices to figure out most childhood things (my parents worked a lot). My cousin Beverly also helped. She would sit behind me on the banana seat and drag her feet on the ground while I pedaled, and then she’d occasionally lift her feet off the ground until I figured out how to balance.
3. Coral or berry?
Coral!
4. What are you allergic to?
Tree and grass pollen, and the occasional cantaloupe makes my throat itch.
5. What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Nutella (the Trader Joe’s version) on whole wheat toast, berries and a bite of scrambled eggs.
6. Your thoughts on the super-shiny highlighting trend?
Quite frankly, I’m surprised it’s still going strong! I was into it about five years ago, but I’m not the biggest fan of the look on myself right now.
7. ’80s or ’90s?
Ooh! Tough choice. I’ll go with the ’90s today.
8. Sandals or flip-flops?
Flip-flops.
9. Oversized tee or crop top?
The crop top, worn with high-waisted workout pants.
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit?
El Hub and I took Connor to Disney on Ice at the Oakland Arena the last weekend of February, and I remember being freaked out about the virus at the time and administering hand sanitizer to the fam after we touched anything, but the all-encompassing magnitude of the crisis here in America still wasn’t really real by then, you know?
I still can’t believe we were in that space with all those people… Only three months, and it seems like a lifetime ago.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

My daughter and I spend the last week, first few days of March in Austin, Texas for a mini vacation. Austin is a big music town and we went to lots of clubs for comedy and music. One of my favorite clubs there was called Esther’s Follies. The show has skits in the tradition of Saturday Night Live. It was so fun! I certainly didn’t realize a Pandemic was upon us!

90s nostalgia!
8. Sandals or flip flops?
Sandals.
9. Oversized tee or a crop top?
Lately, oversized tee with the off-the-shoulder vibe. As it gets warmer….I am seeing the merits of crop tops LOL.

So over it. I don’t like it on myself, and I’m starting to dislike it on others too. I prefer a subtle highlight, or a blush that’s a little glowy (not metallic!) I wish Mac would release those extra dimension blushes in a satin formula!

Sandals.
9. Oversized tee or a crop top?
Oversized tee.
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit?
Had fiancés family over for a gathering sometime in February. Approximately 12 people. I feel like hosting for large crowds is a skill you lose if you don’t use it often. I was just starting to get good at it, too!
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces? No. My eldest brother’s draft number sucked, but Nixon ended the war before he was inducted. My cousin was in the Navy and when he came back he barely spoke for 30 years. Lots of the young men in my neighborhood either came back damaged or didn’t come back at all.
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike? My Dad! He was the best. He’d push me along in circles in our tiny backyard for hours on end after dinner until I got it.
3. Coral or berry? Berry
4. What are you allergic to? So many things. Rx drugs, pollen (I sneezed like 8x’s in a row last night.) The worst, I’m allergic to macadamia nuts and their oil.
5. What did you have for breakfast this morning? A 7am workout. Lol. After I came home I had a fully caffeinated cup of coffee and tofu scramble with avocado and kimchi as toppers.
6. Your thoughts on the super-shiny highlighting trend? Was never my thing. Never will be.
7. 80s or 90s? Hmm. Both? I worked in the 80’s and thought I was going to be rich and famous. Lol. But married Dear Husband in 90 and had Dear Daughter in 93, went to grad school. But mostly I had fun raising Dear Daughter that decade.
8. Sandals or flip flops? Flip flops!!!
9. Oversized tee or a crop top? Oversized tee.
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit? Went to LA for Valentine’s Day with Dear Husband then to Tokyo with him while he worked. I walked over 24K steps one day and saw the new Olympic stadium which sadly won’t be used this year. I remember being on the plane and worrying about germs and wiping everything down with disinfecting wipes. This was just about the time the cruise ship in Tokyo harbor was found to have an outbreak of the virus. When we got back we were supposed to go to Houston for the ballet and the Rodeo the first weekend in March, but I was starting to worry about the virus by then. My doctor urged me not to go so I stayed home. Dear Daughter still went, but while she was on the plane there, both the Houston Ballet cancelled all performances and the Mayor of Houston asked the Rodeo to close down. Gosh I miss traveling. But mostly I miss being in Tokyo while Dear Husband works.

No.
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike?

My dad, though I’m sure my brother pitched in with constructive criticism.
3. Coral or berry?

4. What are you allergic to?
Annatto, ragweed, eucalyptus, whatever adhesive is on Band-AIDS, latex and a mystery ingredient in some juices (I’m guessing beets).

Skipped it and had lunch, which was cheesy potato casserole made from leftovers. Yum!
6. Your thoughts on the super-shiny highlighting trend?
Not for me.
7. 80s or 90s?
80s for the music, not the makeup.
8. Sandals or flip flops?

(Bless them!)
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike?

Both? I tend to wear more corals/neutral eye makeup during spring and summertime, and berry/cooler makeup during fall and winter.

I typically don’t eat breakfast (yeah, bad to do, since I end up ravenous by lunch)

7. 80s or 90s?
80’s (rock and pop music), 90’s (pop and dance music)
8. Sandals or flip flops?
Sandals – flip flops have a unnatrual habit of flying off my feet whenever I walk.
9. Oversized tee or a crop top?
I wish I could wear a crop top, but with the ‘extra fluffiness’ I’ve gained over the years, think I’ll stick with the oversized tee LOL.
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit?
Ee gads, umm, farmer’s market? Before we moved. Where we live now, it’s a quiet little coast town, not really known for big events (I guess other than the golf event that rolls in every spring, that’s about it)
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces? No. My big sister served alongside our soldiers in Afghanistan fighting against the heroin warlords. I am very proud of her.

6. Your thoughts on the super-shiny highlighting trend? Don’t like it. It makes people look like they are made out of metal or shiny plastic.
7. 80s or 90s? For makeup, 90s. For music, 80s.
8. Sandals or flip flops? Sandals.
9. Oversized tee or a crop top? Oversized tee. (But I prefer woven cotton because I live in an extremely hot summer area.)
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic?

We went to a children’s birthday party shortly before shut down too. One of Connor’s classmates had their party at a space with a big indoor play area with slides and trampolines and ball pits! It feels like a lifetime ago.
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces?
I grew up in the military as my dad was active duty (Army.) On my dad’s side, my great-aunt Joanie (deceased, Navy, battlefield nurse. WWII, Korea, Vietnam), great-grandpa (deceased. Navy, pilot. WWII.), grandpa (deceased. Army, Vietnam), and Dad (Army, First Gulf War.) On my mom’s side, there’s my grandpa (deceased. Navy, sailor. Was there at Pearl Harbor), my uncle (Marines, I think. Vietnam.), a few cousins and second cousins (cousins once removed? Terminology is so weird) (Army, Air Force and Navy). I do believe we have a relative who fought in WWI but I’d have to double check. XD

A regular T-shirt.

Um, I don’t actually remember.
Aww, but I love flip flops! I just have to find a pair with some arch support!
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces?
No. I’m too lazy, snarky, questioning, and argumentative to do so.

I don’t remember. Probably my dad and/or my grandma.
3. Coral or berry?
Berry-it’s much more flattering to my cool skin.
4. What are you allergic to?
Tree and grass pollen, mold, the tiniest changes in temperature/humidity/precipitation (weather symptoms: sneezing, coughing, runny/stuffy nose, headaches, sinus pressure, and occasional mild heat rashes). Rubber cement (during middle school science fair time, I always had to have my dad assemble my trifold boards on the porch because the rubber cement we were told to use gave me headaches and nausea). \
Sulfa drugs (the one time I took one, I ended up breaking out into a rash that was so itchy I couldn’t concentrate).

Probably the ’90s, because I was born in ’91, but I also like a lot of music/fashion/makeup from the ’80s.
8. Sandals or flip-flops?
Sandals. The only flip-flops I like are the ones that have a wedge heel on them.
9. Oversized tee or crop top?
Oversized tee, which I wear somewhat regularly-most of my graphic tees are slightly oversized and from the men’s section, because they usually have a better selection.
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit?
I ate at a Golden Corral pretty much the day before Ohio’s stay-at-home order went into effect.
Do you ever go to pollen.com? I use it to check the levels in the morning! It’s really helpful for me, especially during May and June. This season has been a bad one here in the SF North Bay.

I hope you had a lovely weekend, Eileen!
1. Have you served or do you currently serve in the armed forces?
My Granddad was assigned to hot air balloon recon in WWI. Isn’t that such a mind-bending job title and crazily historically specific?! My Dad was a Navy pilot. My uncle was a Vietnam Army soldier. For myself, it wasn’t an especially welcoming or expected thing to do as a young woman.
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike?
My Dad gave me pointers and training wheels. My Mom assumes I’d figure it out by experience, which I did.
3. Coral or berry? Coral toenail polish on tap for my next pedi!
4. What are you allergic to?
Negativity (which doesn’t prevent me from experiencing it sometimes)
5. What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Cheerios! I prefer eggs or oatmeal, but others in the family like cold cereal, so.
6. Your thoughts on the super-shiny highlighting trend?
Slightly shiny or glowing is better irl.
7. 80s or 90s?
90’s
8. Sandals or flip flops?
Ergonomic flip flops with arch support (I buy a brand for kids called Kidzerts. They are insanely awesome, I use them as house and garden shoes)
9. Oversized tee or a crop top?
I suppose crop top, as I really dislike oversized tees except for sleeping!
10. The last big public gathering or event you went to before the pandemic hit?
I traveled to visit my Mom at her senior active living community. So glad to fit that in! They’re on major lockdown now, of course.
The balloon recon is SUPER SPECIFIC; I love it!
BTW, thank you letting me know about Kidzerts. I’ve been looking for a flip flop with decent arch support! My last pair died and I’ve been surviving on wearing El Hub’s too big slippers. LOL!
Hope you like them!!
1. No
2. I think my Dad?
3. Berry! I love Coral, but I can’t seem to pull it off.
4. Penicillin and latex apparently!
5. My usual: a bunch of zucchini and mushrooms covered in 2 sunny side up eggs with hot black tea. <3

7. 80s! 😀
8. Sandals. I can't stand anything between my toes.
9. Right now I'm wearing a sorta oversize shirt so I'll go with that.
