So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
An absolute joy to be around! ??? People can’t get enough of my sunny demeanor, and my cup runneth over with patience. (Yes, that was sarcasm.)
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
My left. It’s the one that bothers me the least, even with Raul (a.k.a. “the bald spot”)! My left brow is longer than my right, and I like where the arch is positioned, so it’s easier to fill in. My right brow is significantly shorter and straighter than the left one, and the arch isn’t as defined, so it takes more work to fill in.
3. What makes your skin ? happy?
When I get enough sleep, drink obnoxious amounts of water, and use Kate Somerville Anti Bac Clearing Lotion.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
GIRL, I’m not cooking for three families! I made a reservation at a restaurant, which means, for once, that all I have to do is show up! And I’m here for that!
5. Who runs the world?
Cats. And rich old dudes. ??
Who caved in the second weekend of the Sephora VIB sale?
Alternatively: Who fell prey to the second weekend of the Sephora VIB Sale? LOL! Come on, come clean!
I must’ve checked to see if the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Glow Palette had been restocked, oh…about 100 times. Never mind that I had signed up to get a restock notification last week, ha ha ha! Apparently, I really, really want to go there.
I didn’t though, but I still put a bunch of stuff in my cart anyway, just for kicks (including this CT kit and the Drunk Elephant Marula Oil, which everyone raves about).
Totally not makeup-related, but thanks for all the meal recommendations for feeding guests. I went to Costco over the weekend, got some pre-made dishes and side dishes from the refrigerated section, a few salads, and a rotisserie chicken (which just happens to be gluten-free, hooray!). I also made a huge pot of chili, which has carried over for several meals. Seriously, where would I be without you? Probably in a corner rocking myself back and forth slowly and whispering “safe place, safe place.”
Thanks again.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Rachel says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Crabby and expecting everyone to feel sorry for me!
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
I would say my left one, I think because I’m left handed it always looks better!
3. What makes your skin happy?
Origins powerful lifting cream. I switched over when my skin started getting really dry from winter and it seems to be working.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Going to my aunts’ house. I am making a wild rice side dish and a Waldorf salad, I need some veggie options!
5. Who runs the world?
My cat thinks he runs my world!
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
I could do with some wild rice and a Waldorf salad right now, too! 🙂 For Christmas this year I volunteered to take charge of the veggie sides, because if I don’t do it, it will be an all-meat holiday, LOL! What do you put in your wild rice?
Rachel says
I found a recipe I haven’t tried before that’s pretty simple, basically cream of mushroom soup, fresh mushrooms, onions, and celery…hopefully it’s good!
Karen says
Sounds delicious. Do you toast the rice first?
Rachel says
No the recipe says to cook the rice like normal, then add the other ingredients and bake so it’s kind of like a casserole, required fare in the Midwest!
Karen says
Interesting! I bet toasting the rice would bring out the nuttiness, but hey, if you can skip a step why not?
I love casseroles, by the way. I didn’t eat them often growing up and now as an adult I can’t get enough of them.
Syahidah says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Oh…this was not too far away for me! Postpartum was HELL in so many ways and the sleep deprivation did not help things. Surprisingly though, I’m OK for 2 days with little to no sleep but on the 3rd day, NOTHING is funny anymore.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
I’ve been told my right (?) is a bit shorter than my left and that there’s a bald patch.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Probiotics, sleep, water, weekly LED treatments.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
We already celebrated Thanksgiving in Canada !
5. Who runs the world?
Let’s just say I agree with you, Karen. 😉
Karen says
Nope, nothing is ever funny on that third day of no sleep!
Ruchita says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Very grumpy and I don’t talk much. If I am not standing up, I will fall asleep right away.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
My right one. Of course that is the one that gets covered by my bangs.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Taking off my makeup every night, moisturizer.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
I ordered food from a local restaurant that serves Amish-style meals. It’s only going to be three of us, but I just don’t have the time/energy to shop and cook this week.
5. Who runs the world?
Cats.
Happy Monday!
Karen says
Hope you had a wonderful Monday, Ruchita. 🙂
Ruchita says
Thank you! Hope your Monday went well also. It snowed here today, but it is a short week and a long weekend coming up. That’s something to look forward to. 🙂
Jaclyn Levy says
1. Is it boring to say “sleepy?” Mostly I’m grouchy.
2. My right! The left one misbehaves and takes twice as long to do!
3. Sunscreen. I’ve worn sunscreen every day for over a decade and it’s finally paying off. 😀
4. Traveling to New Orleans! My husband’s mom is an amazing cook so we are looking forward to celebrating the holiday with her.
5. These days I feel like it’s Bezos and Zuckerburg.
Karen says
I love New Orleans, Jaclyn! Eat ALL THE GOOD FOOD for me, please!
Leah G. says
Hi Karen,
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! 🙂
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? Low on patience that’s for sure.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? I would say my right one. But I’m long overdue for a brow wax!
3. What makes your skin happy? Lately it’s coconut oil! Believe it or not that’s really been helping with the acne I get on my chin (due to hormones).
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? We are heading to Western MA. Both sets of parents, my Aunt & Uncle, and my brother will be there. We combined all of our holidays years ago and my husband is an only child so that makes it easier.
5. Who runs the world? I wish cats! But like you said it’s old white guys.
Karen says
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too, Leah. Have safe travels out to Western MA.
Diana says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Super grumpy and irritable. I basically breathe fire but don’t make any sense when I talk. I feel sorry for people who are around me at that time. Usually it’s no one though because I go straight for bed in a dark quiet room…or car. LOL
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
My left eyebrow. It’s got a nicer shape and arch to it but it is less full. My right brow is a mess so I try to match the left to the right.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Water, moisturizer, birth control, exfoliation and sheet masks. Basically, moisture because I have dry, dull skin. The birth control keeps my acne in check and my skin smooth.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Spending it with my family: parents and siblings. I’m spending the weekend in San Diego with my boyfriend’s family…they’re a bit less stressful than my own so hopefully it’ll even out my stress levels. Thanksgiving with my own family is always STRESSFUL.
5. Who runs the world?
Rich white people. No offense intended but from where I’m at, it’s true.
Karen says
Diana, I breathe fire too when I’m really, REALLY tired. You make me laugh, girl!
Amalia says
Rich old dudes, runs the world… YOU CRACK ME UP!
E.D. says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Most lethargic, but I can really snap at people if I get woken up too much. It’s a better idea to walk my zombie ass to a bed.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
The left one. The arch is better and it tapers more. My right one needs a lot more plucking to try to maintain a shape.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Surprisingly, giving up creams. My skin is insanely dry, but almost any cream cleanser or moisturizer manages to clog pores. I’ve switched almost exclusively to cleansing cloths, toners, and masks and there has been a huge improvement.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Hosting. Originally it was just DH, my sister, and I, but now my parents and grandparents are coming down. We’ll have a full meal now that it’s up to seven people (instead of just sides like I had planned).
5. Who runs the world?
Admins. Never piss off admin assistants!
Karen says
Hi E.D.!
Re: your answer to question 5… SO TRUE. (I’ve worked as an admin assistant many times!)
Erin says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
I’m almost always tired. If I’m really bad, I’ve got no filter on my mouth.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
Left, it’s longer and with a slightly more defined arch too!
3. What makes your skin happy?
Sleep and water of course! But ZIIP and a few products seem to really be my skin’s jam. Those products that make noticeable difference: UFO, Luna, Good Genes, Tidal and Ceramic Slip (Old Version) by SR. Farmcy Honey Drop and Sleep Tight. I’m Real Honey Mask. Korean and Japanese stuff from Whamisa, Klairs, iUnik and Hadolabo.
Jury is out on my newly acquired C-Tango and Protini but so far they seem to be legit. Caudalie The Premier Eye Cru Eye Cream work well too but not always for me.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Feeding the troops on T-day after work and then our own T-day on Saturday so my sister can be here as she also works on T- day.
5. Who runs the world?
Beyonce it seems but she’s doing a piss poor job if you ask me.
Karen says
LOL, yeah, what’s up with that, Beyonce?!
Jennifer says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? The biggest biatch! I’ve got to have sleep
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? the right
3. What makes your skin happy? lots of water, Sunday Riley products and lots of sleep and yoga and walking
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? I’m cooking a feast, we’re talking turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato praline casserole, cranberry relish and pies! Lots and lots of pies. And wine, and pumpkin pie martinis to start!
5. Who runs the world? the money men
Karen says
Girl I wish I could go to your house for T-day!
Katie says
Sweet potato praline? I think I just started salivating.
Suzanne C says
1.. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
I’m Mary freakin’ Poppins, of course. ?
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
My right one. My left has these super fine hairs on the top that never come off.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Allll the moisture. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream is my bff right now.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Shopping!
5. Who runs the world?
Let’s just be honest: my girls, lol.
Karen says
LOL, my girl runs the world too, Suzanne. 🙂
breyerchic04 says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
I get a buzz of energy after about 18 hours awake and am silly, but not actually good at anything I try to do.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
Left has a better tail, right has a nicer arch.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Going into winter very much oils, using Sunday Riley Juno so much right now.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? Very little, thank goodness
5. Who runs the world? Putin? I think it’s Putin.
Karen says
I’ve used Juno before and liked it! Do you layer it with Good Genes?
Tatiana says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? Cranky arsed beeyotch. Sorry for the language.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? Depends on the day. Mostly it’s the left one. It has a better arch.
3. What makes your skin happy? Haven’t figured that one out this year. As I get older it keeps changing.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? Dear Husband and Dear Daughter and me. Cooking a stuffed pork tenderloin (DD doesn’t like turkey). Dear Husband just wants stuffing. Green beans. Yams. A salad. I kept dropping restaurant hints but Dear Husband kept making up excuses. (Real reason, he hates paying money for other people to cook, when he loves my cooking.)
5. Who runs the world? Rich, old white dudes.
There was another weekend for the Sephora sale? Is it still on today? I need to go back and see if I can find some workable skincare.
Karen says
Yeah, it ends today! Jump on it!
Tatiana says
The Sephora near me was supposed to move into a larger remodeled space this past weekend. I’m gonna go check it out to see if it’s real or been construction delayed. (Dear Husband is away on a business trip.)
Karen says
Or you could just jump online! Hopefully what you want is still available.
Rachel Runyan says
I’m glad you got the food figured out. Yay for Costco! You were smart to make reservations for Thanksgiving. Enjoy and have a wonderful Turkey Day!
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? I’m an air-head and really, really irritable and b*tchy.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? My left. It’s fuller, longer, and has a better arch.
3. What makes your skin happy? Staying out of the sun and removing my makeup at night.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? It will be me, hubby, our two sons, and my brother this year. Because my boys have Asperger’s, we stay home so they can have food they’ll like and not too much stimulation. My brother’s smoking a brisket (divine!) and we’ll make a small turkey, too. Most of the traditional sides.
My husband took a few vacation days, so he has the whole week off. He’s making shelves for the top border of the kitchen, and I’m going to put my Funko pop figures, unicorns, and other ridiculous things up there.
5. Who runs the world? Rich men the world over.
Karen says
SERIOUSLY, yay for the Costco! Some of the dishes, I probably wouldn’t touch if it was just us, but for a bunch of people a tray of scalloped potatoes is a godsend!
I’ve never had a smoked brisket before, but it sounds delicious. Do you eat it with any type of gravy or sauce?
Rachel Runyan says
I eat it as is, but it’s also good on sandwiches with barbecue sauce. My brother makes a dry rub of brown sugar, onion powder, garlic, some pepper, and chili powder. He puts apple cider vinegar and merlot wine in the water trays and slow cooks it at a low temperature till it’s ready to melt in your mouth.
Michele DiCola says
Hi Karen ,
When I’m really tired all my aches and pains come alive like my knee that now has arthritis and needs replacement!
Left eyebrow . Just had a microblade fill and they ate both different .
My skin is happy with rest , fluids and moisturizer!
Cooking for 13 people but I’ve done up to 25 ??
Dogs ? run the world .

ericca says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? quiet mixed with a flat affect. not animated at all
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? girl. like omg. i just was talking about this. i believe its my left side but its my whole left side thats bomb
3. What makes your skin happy? moisture
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? making the ham. and thats all im eating because turkeys are making people sick
5. Who runs the world? not a person but money
Katie says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Definitely silly and punch-drunk, and then cranky. Also, weirdly hungry?
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
My right one (the one on the left for someone looking at me). It’s more evenly dense and has a more elegant shape, while lefty is thicker in some spots and thinner in others, and has a wonky shape. They can be evened out by brushing the hairs up to hide weird spots and obviously by filling them in, but there’s a definite prettier sister.
In other eyebrow news, I was at Sephora today and in an icy shock realized I’ve been using the same brow powder for more than SEVEN YEARS. Not different pans of the same product, the same exact one. I am very sparing with brow powder so it’s still going but has serious pan on it, but it simply needed to be replaced. It’s so old, ABH has actually tweaked the color of the brow powder since then and the back sticker is completely different. Yikes!
3. What makes your skin happy?
Chemical exfoliation, light physical exfoliation, all of the exfoliation. If I don’t exfoliate regularly, I get super flakey and whiteheads pop up everywhere and my pores seem to expand to the size of small sinkholes. Not cute.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Going to my mom and stepdad’s house on the actual day to have dinner with them, my brother, my stepsister, and her fiance. My stepdad is making duck! How could I turn down free duck? The day after I’m going out to visit friends from college for a “friendsgiving” dinner, where I’ll be bringing one of my pumpkin pies. It’s the Garam Masala Pumpkin Tart recipe published in the NYTimes, based on a dish from Marcus Samuelsson. I personally significantly reduce the amount of sugar that’s in the recipe and add some lemon zest. It honestly converted me from a pumpkin pie hater to a lover!
5. Who runs the world?
At this point probably Rihanna, if she wanted to!
Sephora Sale: I went over today and replaced my brow powder (ABH powder duo in Auburn) and saw that the Becca Volcano palette was reduced to $28. I’d been back and forth on it when it came out, but with it reduced and then the 20% off on top of that, I just went for it. Very excited to play with it soon!
Chelsea says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
Whiny AF!
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
Neither are great, LOL.
3. What makes your skin happy?
Some humidity, not being in the sun, lots of moisturizer. My skin is NOT happy after wearing glitter and eyeshadow this weekend.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
We’re hosting! My husband does most of the cooking because I’m generally a terrible cook and considered not helpful LOL. My parents, my brother, and brother’s wife are coming over. I ordered this pie I’m really hype for from a local place – a caramel apple ice cream pie with an oatmeal cookie crust! It cost more than the turkey LOL
5. Who runs the world?
Cats and old white dudes.
I bought a Volition Beauty Illuminating Sunscreen during the extended VIB sale, but I think it’s a bit drying for me 🙁 It’s a shame, it looked really nice on.
Kate & Bree says
Hi Karen! Guess what? Bree destroyed her very first stuffed toy! She’s going through a massive puppy phase since being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on the proper medication.
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired?
A real princess. [sarcasm] More like you will be dealing with the Wicked Witch of the West mixed with Maleficent.
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow?
Left!
3. What makes your skin happy?
Lots of sleep and a hideous amount of water.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?
Celebrating Bree’s first rescue-versary! Thanksgiving happens to fall on it!
5. Who runs the world?
Dogs and horses. Definitely dogs and horses.
Eileen says
1. What are you like when you’re really, really tired? I lose interest in people and things around me. I just want to be left alone to nap. Zzzzz . . .
2. Which eyebrow is your “good” eyebrow? My right. It has a lovely soft arch.. My left is more angular and has a little bald spot.
3. What makes your skin happy? Sleep! And La Mer.
4. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year? We had my sons and their special ladies over for the big turkey feast this weekend as one of my sons will be flying to Hong Kong tomorrow. Thanksgiving itself will be pretty low key in comparison. A couple friends will be coming over and I’ll fix Lebanese food.
5. Who runs the world? With all the chaos, violence, and destruction we’ve been witnessing this past year, it’s pretty obvious to me that no one is!
