So…what is the Monday Poll?
Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Yea! (Or YAY!). Particularly if there’s a a wee bit of tasteful warm golden shimmer up in the mix. I’m into it.
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Nay…unless we’re talking about something for Halloween. Basically, though, I’m just not an orange nail polish person.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
I was in third grade at the time, and my friend and I went trick-or-treating ? by ourselves in our neighborhood… We came upon a house with a porch light on, but there were no kids waiting at the door.
We thought, “Cool, we won’t have to elbow anybody for candy!” We strolled up the walkway, la-dee-da, thinking business as usual, and rang the doorbell.
After about a minute of waiting for someone to come to the door, BAM! — the lights suddenly started flashing really fast. Seemingly out of nowhere came a loud “MWAH-AH-AH-AH-AH-AH!” Then somebody screaming bloody murder as REALLY LOUD scary Halloween music started playing!
Man, we ran back to the sidewalk and all the way to our houses so fast you would’ve thought we were Junior Olympic sprinters. We were also screaming the entire time, LOL! I bet we gave whoever set up that house a good laugh. ?
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Pecan, baby!
5. How’s your line dancing?
I can’t do any fancy footwork or anything, so I’m not a professional, but I can hang. 🙂
What the heck they do with those XXL pumpkins?
You know, the ginormous ones you see at pumpkin patches and fall displays? They always have at least a couple at the Honor System Pumpkin Patch in Larkspur, which is a town in southern Marin County. We were there yesterday and I couldn’t help but wonder about their fate after Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Does somebody gut the pumpkins, then roast all the pumpkin seeds? Are the pumpkin seeds XXL, too? What happens to the actual pumpkin? Is it turned into lots and lots of pumpkin soup? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
I’m dying to know, so if you have any insight please spill the beans.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
5. How’s your line dancing?
Barb says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Yea – if it’s a coraly/orangey color!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Nay – I think I only have one orange nail polish and I think I’ve only used it once when the Flyers were in the playoffs.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
I’ve got plenty. Putting on those plastic masks/costumes over your bundled up clothes. The inside of the mask being all sweaty and hot from breathing in it. Barely being able to see out of the eye holes in them.
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Pumpkin, with lots of whipped cream!
5. How’s your line dancing?
If it’s nothing fancy, I’m good.
Karen says
Hi Barb,
I remember how uncomfortable those masks and plastic costumes were too. Somehow we always made it work though, LOL!
Hope you’re having a nice Monday so far. Anything exciting happening on your end?
Barb says
Hi Karen. Not a thing. Finally feeling back to almost normal. Had a pretty good weekend. Might get a new color on my nails tonight, if I have the time. Hope you’re having a good Monday!
Karen says
I have a new color set for Wednesday and I can’t wait (although I’m super impressed with Sally Hansen Bronze reflection so far). What color are you thinking? I *might* take a SH break for a minute and try a polish by Oribe. They have a beautiful jade green that is totally up my ally! We’ll see though, since Sally has been rocking my world so hard lately. LOL
Barb says
I never did them last night. Once I get home from work and get changed, that’s it. All bets are off. I have a gorgeous purple shade. Not sure of the name though.
Chelsea says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Probably not on me!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Nay.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Having to wear my princess costume over a snowsuit due to northern Michigan weather! Dad made me a wand / scepter to go with it.
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Apple with streusel or crumble topping! Lots of ice cream on top.
5. How’s your line dancing?
Not good at all, LOL
Karen says
Hi Chelsea!
Your pics from your performance were so cool. Did it go well?
Happy Monday!
Chelsea says
It did! Unfortunately I was rotated toward the wall for a good portion of the performance since I lost my spin but I’m pretty happy with it! Snakes stayed in! All the acts were amazing.
Karen says
Ahh, the element of surprise that comes with performing live! It makes every performance an adventure, doesn’t it? Glad the snakes stayed in… That to me would be the hardest part!
Jaclyn Levy says
1. Nay. I’m a traditional pink girl
2. Yea! My favorite is an orange-red by Essie. It always looks good on me!
3. The year i dressed up as a Princess Bride Fairy Angel. My family still talks about it!
4. Pumpkin. Yum!
5. Terrible!
Jane says
Ok, here goes:
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? It depends on whether you mean pumpkin orange or coral orange. Not a big fan overall.
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? No.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? I remember just going with my friends up and down the block. It always was fun. If I can indulge, the best Halloween memories are with Zack in the city and seeing him in his Buzz Lightyear costume on the elevator in our building. He wore that thing throughout the year when he was ages 3 thru 4. I do miss those days! Had some good ones in NJ as well.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? I am a big blueberry pie fan year round, but I love Pecan pie for Thanksgiving with a little Vanilla or Dulce Le Leche ice cream (Haagen Dazs).
5. How’s your line dancing? Damn good ,if I do say so for a 59 year old broad! I can do a mean Electric Slide!
Be well!
Karen says
Hi Jane,
People say that to me all the time — the toddler years are the best years. I’m trying to enjoy every moment of it (even the meltdowns).
P.S. I’m so surprised that so many people aren’t into orange nail polish!
Hanna Rose says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Yes in theory, but no in practice! I haven’t found one that my ghostly white skin could pull off yet. If it’s more of a peachy shade, that’s usually just peachy for me!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Yes, but only at Halloween for me too. I think orange makes my fingers look like carrot sticks. Or like they’re tarnished by cigarette smoke! Again, I think my skin tone doesn’t suits the warmth. I know it looks incredible on some people.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Halloween scared me way too much as a child to enjoy it but I do remember loving doing spooky drawings. As a teenager, I loved Halloween parties! Great excuse to get dressed up, go out and have some fun!
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Cherry pie! Or even better, Bakewell Tarts! (Wiki: English confection consisting of a shortcrust pastry shell beneath layers of jam, frangipane, and a topping of flaked almonds). Yummy!
5. How’s your line dancing?
Terrible! Truly terrible! But I love Cowboy boots and denim skirts. I wish I could be like LeAnn Rimes in Coyote Ugly. Admittedly, that’s more bar dancing than line dancing but still…! Either way, it just ain’t happening for me sadly.
That’s me all done!
Hope everybody has a good week and thank you Karen for helping to get things off to a great start with this lovely Monday Poll!

Karen says
Thank you for doing the poll today, Hanna! You have a wonderful rest of your day. 🙂
Jane says
Check this out if you want to see a mammoth pumpkin Karen, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6282555/Britains-biggest-pumpkin-weighing-1-14tons-carved-freaky-face-ready-Halloween.html
The pumpkin weighed in at 1.105 tonnes!! That’s a whole lot of soup …
Karen says
UM… WOW! I seriously wonder how big the seeds are! They’ve gotta be XXL for an XXL pumpkin, right?!
Jane says
I should imagine so, yes. Apparently other monster size veg growers pay through the nose for the seeds in the hope of growing an even bigger whopper!
kellly says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? My coloring is sort of on the golden-ish side, so orange is ok with me.
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? Same, but I hardly wear polish any more since I chip it within 12 minutes of putting it on.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? My grandma had those paper maché pumpkin heads that are sort of spooky-cool.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? BOURBON Pecan
5. How’s your line dancing? Line dancing? What’s that? (jk) but no line dancing skills at all.
Karen says
You gotta look into those Sally Hansen Color Therapy polishes, girlfriend!
Rachel Runyan says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? Yea. It’s not my most worn color, but I like a nice tangerine or orange-coral shade on me.
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? Yea! I like sparkly or shimmery oranges of all shades.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? Winning costume contests at school, even though we were dirt poor and mine were made by me from stuff scavenged from what we had around the house.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? Pecan
5. How’s your line dancing? Non-existent. I’ve never done it in my life and don’t want to.
Karen says
Girl! Believe it or not line dancing can be fun! I didn’t think I’d like it either but the repetition is strangely freeing and fun.
Anywho, hope you’re having a lovely Monday so far. 🙂
Rachel Runyan says
My Monday is OK, thanks. I’m in the midst of a cold that my younger son was nice enough to give me for my birthday. lol Otherwise, the weather is beautiful and it’s calm around here so far, I’m pretty happy with the unseasonably sunny and warm weather we’ve had hear all October. This week, it looks like it might get cooler and rainier finally (i.e., normal), but then I get to wear my sweaters, so I don’t even mind.
It’s not so much the dancing part of line dancing, it’s the fact I’d have to listen to country music. Aside from some old school Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers and a few random songs, I really hate country-western music.
I hope you’re having a great Monday, too. I never thought about what they’d do with the giant pumpkins. I’m intrigued with the possibility of giant pumpkin seeds. That would be awesome.
Diana says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? If it’s like a coral orange yes
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? Nay on me
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? My mom made me an I Dream Of Jeannie costume fro her silk pjs &I won 1st prize at school
4. Your holiday pie of choice? Pumpkin pie with whipped cream& drizzled carmel sauce
5. How’s your line dancing? I dance better in a square lol non existent
Karen says
Hi Diana,
That costume sounds amazing! Hope you’re having a nice day so far… It finally feels like fall here! Crisp and cool outside, but still sunny.
P.S. Give Black Jack a kitty hug for me. 🙂
Katie says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Ummm, I don’t know! I have never worn/bought orange blush. It might look weird on fair skin? I can’t decide but now I am curious!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Nay, unless its for Halloween. Then its fine.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Haunted houses! I am such a wuss though.
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
PUMPKIN.
5. How’s your line dancing?
Its alright.
Tatiana says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? Nay
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? Nay. Like with the blush, orange just isn’t a color that works with my skin tone.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? About the time I was in 7th or 8th grade I decided I wasn’t going to go trick or treating anymore. I stayed home to give out the candy. I wore these bell bottom pants with a yellow, white and black flower power mod print all over and a yellow turtle neck with love beads. I think I may have even wore a headband. I thought I was all sorts of hippy cool. NOT. Lol.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? Spiced apple.
5. How’s your line dancing? Not good. I’m uncoordinated.
There must be hundreds of “biggest pumpkin contests” all around the country, because that’s the only reason I can think of anyone trying to grow a pumpkin that large. I can’t imagine the flesh would be very tender or taste very good considering how much fertilizer they pump into them to make them grow that big. I feel like they just get converted back into to compost to spread in the fields again.
Dear Daughter carved pumpkins with some friends and she brought hers over to me to use. It’s all fancy with a cat, haunted house, stars and a moon carved into it. Don’t know where she got that talent from as I usually rushed to carve two triangles for eyes, one for the nose and a crooked mouth into my pumpkin every year.
ericca says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? yes. it looks great with red lipstick
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? yes, why night
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? i never celebrated Halloween as a child , so it was sitting the cafeteria or library alone.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? cherry or sweet potato.
5. How’s your line dancing? girl i have no rhythm but i want to cha cha slide
Kate & Bree says
HI KAREN! I am back from Special Olympics and it was craaaaazy! My horse was in Sith Lord mode! She was not going to listen to me no matter what! I received a gold in English Equitation and silver in Dressage, so I’m really happy with my results.
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
I tried it once, but I didn’t like how it looked on me. I’m a little too fair for orange blush!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
No matter how much I dislike orange blush, I do happen to like orange polish, when I wear polish!
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Oh my gosh, I have so many great Halloween memories thanks to growing up on the military bases. The military bases would go all out for Halloween because it was one of the few holidays that they could bring consistency for kids. I have vivid memories of walking home and every house would be covered in webs, graveyard stones, coffins, spiders, witches that had smacked into trees, stuffed Army uniforms with pumpkins for heads (that was my house, along with a scary mat), little ghosts hanging on tree branches, Jack O’ Lanterns piled on top of each other. It was Halloween Town brought to life.
I’ll never forget this one house that I used to be so scared of. This guy (I think he was a doctor) used to decorate his house with grave markers and a large coffin rested against his house; the coffin would open and close randomly. He had bats that flew on a track around his yard and he played the creepiest music. In order to get the candy, you had to go into the foyer of the house which was kept dark and foggy. There was a witch’s cauldron and next to it was a sleeping wolf. When you put your hand in, the wolf (the guy who decorated the house) came alive and scared the living daylights out of you. I was so scared and my dad had to take my candy for me as I wouldn’t take it from the wolf. HA HA HA. He had the best house every year.
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
I don’t like pie, but I make a really good apple caramel pie that my dad is begging me to make ever since he bought me an apple peeler/corer. I’m told him this weekend. LOL.
5. How’s your line dancing?
I haven’t line danced in YEARS. I’m sure I am very rusty…aside from the Macarena. I can Macarena at least.
Susan C. says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
All the yes! Pretty!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Yaybe. It looks good on other people, but I have to be very cautious of what nail polish colors I pick because my fingers tend to be very pink.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Other than attempting to burn the evil Zagnut on the family driveway, there was the year I collected coins for UNICEF (“Trick or Treat for UNICEF!”) but discovered a hole in the small cardboard donation box at the end of the evening. I must’ve left a trail of pennies all along my Trick or Treat route. Somebody scored.
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Apple crumb, warm, topped with vanilla Haagen-Dazs.
5. How’s your line dancing?
Line dancing? Oh dear…not very good, I suppose. I’m really not one for following assigned steps, and a group of people dancing identical steps and all pivoting in the same direction at the same time kind of gives me the creeps. Maybe it’s a lefty thing.
Trude says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Not for me, but my skin tone goes sallow so easily!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Maybe a seasonal thing, but I have such a hard time breaking away from reds!
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
I have some very happy ones, luckily! When I was in 3rd grade (I think) my mom made me a bright pink popsicle costume (I wore tights so my legs were the stick, and bright pink high top Converse), and it was amazing except I mostly just remember how stinking hard it was to walk in because I had to take such short steps! 🙂
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Pumpkin! I didn’t have my first piece until 4th grade and can’t believe I missed out that long! 😉
5. How’s your line dancing?
It’s passable, I try not to embarrass myself too much!
Christine says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
I don’t know. But I am down to try it! Especially if it has a little shimmer. LOVE shimmer, glitter… unicorn…
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
I’m not really into nail polish. However, I did find a nail polish that I’m loving right now. It’s a nice mix between summer and fall. It’s Essence The Gel Rosewood Forrest. It’s a pretty color pink of pink with a nude touch.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
Every Halloween we went to the pumpkin patch and if I could pick it up, it was my pumpkin. Well, my mom changed the rules when I get a little stronger and picked up a HUGE pumpkin. I still remember smelling the cooking caramel and apple cider when going to the pumpkin patch. Mmmm!
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
Pumpkin of course!!!
5. How’s your line dancing?
Oh my.. it’s been years! I don’t know anymore. But when I go to parties and weddings where they have the group dances, I’m always in it! So, I don’t know how I’d look but I don’t really care! It’s fun!
Kim says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay? Nay for me. Anything with a yellow undertone makes me look horribly jaundiced. 🙂
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay? For Halloween, for sure. Maybe very sheer for every day. Like SUPER sheer.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories? Oh, gosh. I remember being Superman when I was in early grade school and that was the first/last time I wore a cheap, plastic mask (you know, with the dental floss diameter, white elastic band stapled on either side). So hot and uncomfortable. And hard to see out of.
4. Your holiday pie of choice? Pumpkin cheesecake.
5. How’s your line dancing? I’m picturing you asking that question to one of my friends with rhythm (about me) and the comments that would ensue. I think I’m OK. They would say I was one of the “bad bookends”. They like to put me and another of our rhythmically challenged friends on each end to make that funnier. It works. HAHA!
Wanda says
What does one do with those ginormous pumpkins? Well if you live in the Windsor, Nova Scotia Canada area, you hollow them out, paint them and race them at the annual pumpkin regatta: https://worldsbiggestpumpkins.com
Erin says
1. Orange blush: yea or nay?
Nay, coral is as close to orange as I can get!
2. Orange nail polish: yea or nay?
Also nay, orange looks terrible on me.
3. What’s one of your childhood Halloween memories?
I don’t have traditional ones, my parents didn’t let me do typical stuff. I did get to go to a pumpkin patch once, that was okay!
4. Your holiday pie of choice?
I love pie but I prefer berry pie. We’re also an apple crisp family.
5. How’s your line dancing?
Terrible!
