So…what is the Monday Poll?
Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
Now, obviously. Is someone bringing coffee?? If not, I volunteer as tribute, since there can be no ? doughnuts without ☕ coffee.
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
Not for, like, legit purposes, HA HA HA! Like, I’ve never won a pageant or been a queen or a ? princess in a parade… I actually do own a tiara, though! I wore it for Halloween a few years ago when I dressed up as the girl from the cover of Hole’s Live Through This album.
I have to say…it was surprisingly comfortable! I should bust that thing out again.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
Girl, this question is just rude. OK…after much internal debate (imagine not ever having to fill out your brows, EVER!), I choose the naturally longer lashes, because I think I’d get more bang for my buck.
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
Frozen yogurt.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Disneyland ? Paris, because hey! — I’d be in Paris. ?
Hold me…
Seriously, HOLD. ME. As tight as you possibly can! Because every time I walk into TJ’s temptation beckons from every corner.
Remember the sugar skulls from last year? They’re baaaaack. And dare I say cuter than they were the last time around? They didn’t do much for me when I first saw them but now I’m feeling them. Must be the black skull with the aloe (most succulents don’t do a damn for me, but I’ve got a thing for aloe, go figure).
Of course the limited edition snack situation is all that and a bag of birthday cake popcorn right now (yes, you heard me right).
I popped in yesterday to buy some honeycrisp apples (my fave), and in the quick lap I did around the store, I found many, many tasty treats.
The only treat I picked up was this grapefruit scrub though…
What do you think of that Carrot Cake Spread? I think it could be really good or really gross.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Question time! Here are they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Amy says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
Now! Hot, fresh apple cider doughnuts at the cider mill. Or potato cake doughnuts from Holy Doughnut in Portland, Maine. Or fresh off the rack at Bigmouth Doughnuts in Cleveland. Just one, though, or half if it’s monstrously big! They are really filling. Sometimes I like just a doughnut and coffee for dinner.
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
Like you, if I have, it’s been for Hallowe’en.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
Lashes. My brows are quite full already. I often fill them in, but if I don’t, they still look respectable.
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
Just one thing?? There are dozens. Leaving aside the philosophical and global answers for the moment, how about laundry and moving. Nooooo thank you!
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Knoebel’s in Pennsylvania or Canobie Lake in NH. Both family-run parks with wooden roller coasters. At Knoebel’s, you can bring your dog on some of the rides!
Karen says
Hi Amy,
Ya know, I’ve never had a doughnut for dinner. I must rectify that very soon!
Have a great rest of your Monday and a wonderful week. 🙂
Barb says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
Now, of course!!
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
Nope, not even for Halloween.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
My brows are the sparsest they’ve ever been but I’ll go with the lashes, please. Thanks!
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
This sickness I’ve been battling for almost 3 weeks now! Going back to doctor today at 3:00. Wish me luck!
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
I’ve never done Disney, so I guess I’ll go with that just for the experience.
Karen says
Good luck, Barb. I hope you feel better soon!
Ericca says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later? now. you never know what will happen later
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara? no. my head is too big for that
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes? longer lashes
4. Something you’re completely and totally over? bills
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose? disney world. they have so many choices
Karen says
Happy Monday, Ericca. I hope you had a good weekend!
ericca says
hello. i love the plant photo. i am glad you are now donut type of girl
Karen says
Ya know, I always have been! It kicks in full force every once in a while. I’m a fan of simple glazed doughnuts. I also like cake doughnuts, too, but I gotta be in the mood.
Kim says
Happy Monday! I think that carrot cake spread could be good but I’m trying to figure out what to put it on. Maybe carrots? Might make them a little less carroty and a little more cakey? 🙂
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later? Please help yourself. I’ll just gab your ear off while you eat so you don’t have to try to eat and carry on a conversation!
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara? Yes, a few times when they were part of a friend’s costume. Also, the paper crowns at Burger King. HAHA!
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes? Oh, I’m going with the brows but only because you didn’t say “thicker” lashes. Nothing would trump that, for me.
4. Something you’re completely and totally over? Smoking. It took me a very long time to think of something, to be honest. It’s been many years since I’ve had even a tiny puff after a few drinks and I don’t miss it at all.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose? Europa Park. I’ve never been but it’s supposed to be awesome and I love southern Germany. 🙂
Karen says
I just got my TJ’s Flyer today and they suggested toast, and eh, I don’t know how I feel about that. I think I’d just rather have a regular carrot cake.
And LOL about the Burger King crowns! I wonder if they still have those around.
Kim says
Oh, yeah. I’m with you on not being too keen on the toast (with cc spread). Maybe it’s more of a carrot cake flavored cream cheese – maybe on like a cinnamon raisin bagel? I think you sort of have to try it now. 😉
They do! They also have them at Buffalo Wild Wings. They have different sayings on them (like Wing Nut and Minor Winger)- the kids come home with them sometimes. I think you need to ask at BK and B-dubs.
Karen says
Oh, you know what? I read recently that TJs will pretty much let you try anything in the store! All you have to do is ask one of the associates and allegedly they’ll give you a taste. I hope it’s true.
Kim says
No way! I’m glad mine is an hour away or I’d be snacking on the regular. HAHA! You’ll have to let me know. And, no joke, I’m looking at adult (knee length) tutus. I might wear one for every Halloween from now on. That reminds me that I need to google fairy wings, too. 🙂
Isabella says
save my donuts for later
did you know there is a Traders podcast?
I saw those skull planters last week, not my thing but they are nicely done. but you need to try the new squash soup it’s amazing
Karen says
I just found out about the Podcast recently. 🙂 I haven’t tried the Squash Soup yet… I have tried the Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese from the frozen section, though. TBH it’s not all that tasty.
kellly says
OMG those things you show at Trader Joe’s — now I’m going to have to go check out what they have at my store. I don’t go that often because the one closest to me carries alcohol (the other ones in my state don’t) so parking is always beyond impossible in their small lot. So when I go I stock up on everything I could want that won’t spoil until my next trip. My dogs love the Turkey & Cranberry (? i think?) dog treats and they are almost out, so I guess a trip is on order.
Also did you notice that in the first skull planter picture on the second row just to the right of the price sign, the black skull is winkin’?
Karen says
OK, so I didn’t notice that before, LOL! Could that be a mistake by an artist who was temporarily distracted? LOL!
Jaclyn Levy says
1. Later! I often take my boys out for donut dates. We just had one this past Saturday.
2. Yep! At my wedding.
3. Brows!
4. That sequin fabric that changes colors when you rub it in the other direction. It was cool last year on the occasional throw pillow, but now it’s on EVERYTHING from dresses to backpacks to coffee cup warmers and I’m just DONE. Done. The trend has been absolutely murdered.
5. I’m not much of a theme park girl now that I’m in my 30s. I’ll say Disneyland in Singapore because then I’d be in Singapore. ? Happy Monday!
Karen says
Happy Monday to you, too, Jaclyn!
Suzanne C says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
Yes. But I’ll have milk with mine. Both times. ?
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
No, the opportunity has never come up.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
Lashes! My brows are pretty good, but my lashes are sad.
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
American TV. Other than This Is Us and sports, we watch British TV almost exclusively.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Disney World!!!! Particularly Animal Kingdom.
Karen says
Suzanne, I need a list of your favorite British shows! (I just started watching Land Girls BTW.)
Suzanne C says
I loved Land Girls! And you have come to the right place for recommendations, lol.
In roughly order of favorites…
Mysteries:
Inspector Lewis; Shetland; Hinterland; Broadchurch; Vera; Collision (5 part mini-series); Safe (Netflix UK, but available here); Whitechapel; Midsommer Murders; Wallander
In a class all by itself: Fawlty Towers
Period Dramas:
Victoria; Downton Abbey; Larkrise to Candleford; Robin Hood (the one that stars Jonas Armstrong & Richard Armitage); Doctor Thorne (4 part mini-series); North and South (4 part mini-series; stars Richard Armitage- you might be noticing a theme there, lol); Mr. Selfridge; Upstairs, Downstairs (the original); Call the Midwife; Poldark; Grantchester
Honorable Mention: The Crown (Netflix)
Mom’s Shows (I haven’t seen yet):
Miss Marple; The Vicar of Dibley; Rosemary & Thyme; Endeavor; Father Brown
Karen says
GIRL! Thank you for the hookup! I’ve watched quite a few of these but see many things that are new to me. If you haven’t yet seen it you have to watch The Paradise. I think you’d love it!
Tatiana says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later? No, no doughnuts. If I start eating doughnuts I’ll never stop. And yes, they need coffee.
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara? Yup. Went to Disneyland with family, had wine with dinner in the fancy hotel there and bought and wore a tiara in one of the shops afterwards. Dear Daughter still has that tiara.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes? I want both. I have the fuller brows, so I’d love to add the longer lashes with them.
4. Something you’re completely and totally over? Avocado toast. Because there’s avocado in everything now. I remember when I could get 7 avocados for a dollar. Now I’m lucky if I can buy one for under $3. All that avocado toast has created a shortage.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose? Disneyland/CA Adventure in Anaheim because it’s the original or Disneyland Paris, because “Paris” and I haven’t been to that one yet.
I’m sorry, but birthday cake popcorn is just a huge NO in my book. Depending on the ingredient list, I might be tempted by the salted caramel hot chocolate. Usually I’m just not tempted by any of the processed pre-packaged food at TJ’s.
Karen says
SEVEN FOR A DOLLAR? That’s unreal. I’m over avocado toast, too. Avocado pesto, though, I still love. Have you ever made it? It’s super good!
Tatiana says
Avocado pesto? Can’t say I’ve tried that. Isn’t that just guacamole?
Had a good weekend. Dear Daughter finished her outdoor survival school and texted us selfies. She must have had a pound of dirt caked on after two weeks in the wild. In her post shower photo her nose is sunburnt as heck. I cringed inside a bit when I saw that. I can’t wait to pick her up at SFO this evening.
Karen says
It’s surprisingly really good (although it doesn’t keep very well). Here’s the recipe I use:
https://ohsheglows.com/2011/01/31/15-minute-creamy-avocado-pasta/
I can’t wait to hear about your daughter’s adventures!
Erin says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
Now pls
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
Hell ya! BOTH!
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
Lashes! They seem to be growing in shorter!
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
Is it wrong to say periods?
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Probably EuroDisney!
Karen says
My lashes seem to be growing in shorter too! I think it’s the whole growing older thing for me.
Rachel Runyan says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later? Now, always now.
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara? My wedding veil had a beaded crystal tiara. Other than that, just at Halloween.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes? Longer lashes
4. Something you’re completely and totally over? Neutral colored makeup collections, and ABH Modern Renaissance copies. Let’s see some creativity, please!
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose? Disneyland, for sure. When we last went (2006, oy!), it was during my birthday week (mid-October). The Halloween decorations were so cool, especially The Nightmare Before Christmas decor at the Haunted Mansion. I’d do that again in a heartbeat.
Karen says
Oh, that’s such a great idea to go to Disney during Halloween! I’ve never thought to go at that time. Adding it to my bucket list. 🙂 Thanks, Rachel!
Rachel Runyan says
Back then, the lines were so much shorter in October, too. I don’t know about now-days.
Kate & Bree says
Hi Karen! Last week, I got to see Abby at her new place! I was so freaking happy! She looked so much happier. I nearly cried seeing her as she now has a walkout to a paddock so she can walk whenever she wants to (important as her feet are so bad. So, so bad. The walking will help get rid of the toxins) and she has lots of footing.
Saturday, I went to my mentor’s public funeral which was so difficult, but I knew I had to do it. If I didn’t go, I would regret not being able to grieve with so many others. It was, to date, the shortest Catholic funeral I’ve ever been to (it was an hour. My grams’ funeral was 1.5 hours.) I was so happy to see his wish of having a therapy horse there to comfort others there. Doffyn, a former police horse, was dressed up in a saddle pad, bridle, saddle, martingale and girth that all bore the initials “N.E.B. Coyne” on them – my mentor’s name. I had to give Doffyn so many pets and not cry seeing his name emblazoned on the gear. It was really touching. Nick would have loved it. I’ve been really weepy since then because it’s been hard to process everything. He was such a great guy. After that, Bree, my dad and I went on a 2.3 mile hike with some of her other shy dog friends around Lake Andrea. I can’t believe Bree walked around the entire lake! That’s a long walk for her!
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
I’ll have to hit up Paielli’s bakery (aka the best bakery in town), so rain check? I promise it’s worth it, *especially* if you love glazed donuts! So good.
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
I have for ballet. The amount of pins it takes makes them so uncomfortable. I have terrible memories.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
I have long lashes naturally, but I did this thing called pluck my full brows to death so…fuller brows please!
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
Those super sugary frappe things. They look and smell so disgusting.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Disneyland purely because I’ve never been and it’s the Sleeping Beauty castle. I love Sleeping Beauty!
Lulle says
1. Shall we have doughnuts now or later?
You know what, I’m not actually such a huge fan of doughnuts. I often like the idea of doughnut more than the doughnut itself. Can I have a croissant instead?
2. Have you ever worn a crown or a tiara?
Nope! Not for more than a few seconds anyway.
3. Would you rather have naturally fuller brows or naturally longer lashes?
I have naturally long lashes (although they point down) but very sparse, uneven brows so definitely the brows!
4. Something you’re completely and totally over?
Soda. I used to drink so.much.coke when I was a kid (yes, in France…). Now I literally only use it as medication for upset tummy – works great. I absolutely never, ever drink sugary sodas, whether the real sugar or the sweetener versions.
5. If you could celebrate your birthday at a theme park, which one would you choose?
Probably Universal Studios in Orlando? I went to the one in California earlier this year and it was fun!
I love those TJ’s skulls! I might get the one with the air plant tomorrow!
Sarah Lowes says
Salted caramel hot cocoa! Wow…I wish we had that in the UK…
