Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 542

September 17th, 2018 by Karen 55 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

1. What’s your current pedicure situation?

It’s pretty dire and has been for a month. Unpainted toenails and scraggly cuticles FOR DAYS, man.

But on the glass-half-full side, I’ve been good about shaving my toe hairs and moisturizing, ha ha ha! ?

I need to visit the nail salon ASAP because while I could easily do my own pedi, I never feel like I have a long enough block of time at home to sit still and actually DO THEM, ya know?

2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?

Oh, for sure, many times. I’ve been pooped on by birds. Twice. Once was in middle school while I was walking to English class, and again in high school while we were eating lunch outside one day. (Side note: To make band sound even more geeky than it actually is/was, most of the band nerds in my high school ate lunch at the tables right next to the band room. It’s like we couldn’t be away from our instruments for too long or we’d melt.)

And in my adult life, both of the little animals I currently serve have “number two-ed” on me multiple times.

3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?

Eye roll, ya’ll! It’s what I do best. ?

4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?

Hmm… Seeing as how I’m currently doing a load of laundry as I’m typing this (WHEN AM I NOT DOING LAUNDRY THOUGH?!), and I’m already tan, I’m going to pick gym…but only if you pronounce it like “YIM.” ?

5. Fish tail or french braid?

Neither. Dutch braid all the way.

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger?

Ya know…I almost reflexively said no to this, but then I thought about it. There have been countless times when I’ve sat next to people on planes or in lectures at school and they offered me a stick of gum or a Tic Tac, and I accepted. Also, technically, those ladies who work behind the counter at See’s Candies are strangers, and I gleefully take candy from them.

Also, Halloweens. I don’t know all of the people in all of the houses we’ve gone to.

So, my answer is yes.

Sorry, Mom! Apparently, all of those warnings were for naught.

Pumpkin madness has begun

OK, now that we’ve officially made it to mid-September, I feel like I can succumb to the pumpkin madness surrounding me.

I even have a plan!

I love these mini ones.
They kinda look like garlic, yeah?
Someone has very strong opinions about pumpkins.

Don’t laugh. (OK, you can totally laugh.) I’m going to decorate our living room with festive pumpkins because I believe that if you ever have an opportunity to decorate your home with plants from the Cucurbitaceae family, you have to take it.

And I want ALL THE PUMPKINS!

Well…except for this one.

Freaking me out!

What say you — cute or creepy? Looking at it makes my skin tingle (and not in a good way), and I feel like slathering myself with Lubriderm.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation? Just got a pedi on Friday afternoon. So my feet are looking pretty great. I got a navy color, thinking about doing a little gold glitter on the edge in a couple weeks when it starts to wear.
    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you? Nope
    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll? eye roll. I don’t even realize I’m rolling anymore
    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry? Can’t tan because of skin cancer, don’t gym so I guess laundry but I think if I’m home, I’m always doing laundry except for when I’m sleeping at night.
    5. Fish tail or French braid? French–although I don’t know what Dutch braid is.

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger? All The Time

Ooh, I love navy for fall! Not just for nails, either. A smoky navy eye and a dark plum lip = yes!

Anywho, I hope you had a nice weekend. What’s the plan for the week?

Happy Monday, fellow sci-fi geek. That brain pumpkin reminds me of the creature that was killing the miners on Star Trek but then Spock mind-melded with it and found out it was just in pain and protecting its eggs! You remember that, right? 🙂 The Horta. I had to google it.

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation? It’s good because we attended a wedding on Saturday and it was hotter than Hades, so I wore sandals. So, feet were hair and callus free – and toenails were painted (albeit, quickly).
    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you? Maybe our bunny when I was little. I don’t have any specific memory of being pooped on.
    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll? Totally side eye, though I would not have thought about it/realized it without your question.
    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry? Never tanning. I’m going to say home gym while doing laundry. That does actually happen.
    5. Fish tail or French braid? My hair looks best down or half down but if I had to choose what I like best on others, I think I’d say fish tail.

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger? Halloween only. It helps that I don’t really like candy so I’m not tempted to take those offers. HAHA!

GIRL, believe it or not my knowledge of the Star Trek cannon is spotty in some parts, and that storyline just happens to be one of them. I know, I know!

So how was the food and music at the wedding? I hope the ceremony and the party were indoors, ’cause it sounds like it was hot!

HAHA! If you ever get a chance to watch, it’s called The Devil in the Dark. The original ST was always my favorite. 🙂

It was such a fun time. The music was a good mix of “way too current for me” and songs I know from decades past. 🙂 The food was very good with the highlights, for me, being the mac & cheese, french bread, rolls and croissants. It was like a month’s worth of cheat days. Actually, I think my fave was the asparagus in hollandaise. I could have eaten the entire pan. The ceremony was outside and just brutal for the poor wedding party. Luckily it was short and sweet. The rest was a combo of indoors (with AC) and outside under a tent. They had a beautiful day, and it was also the Hubs’ and my anniversary so that was nice.

    3. Eye roll. I perfected this before middle school.
    4. Laundry.

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation?
It’s rapidly becoming critical. I did manage to finally take off the polish my niece put on me at the beginning of August, but that’s as good as it’s gotten lately. (It was a gorgeous navy and it still looked pretty good after 6 weeks. That girl has nail polish skillz.)

    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?
    No.

    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?
I have a black belt in both side eye and eye roll.

    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?
The closest gym is over an hour away, so no to that. I burn rather than tan, so no to that. So I guess laundry, because I always seem to be doing that, lol.

    5. Fish tail or French braid?
I prefer French braid, but my hair isn’t quite long enough for any kind of braid.

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger?
    Not that I remember.

P.S. Was the pedicure her idea or yours?

Happy Monday! She was doing all our nails, since we were going out of town for the weekend. We made an evening of it.

I hope Connor is a better napper than my girls. The two littles look at me like I’m insane when I say it’s nap time. But then the two older ones used to be like that also; now all they do is eat and sleep.

That sounds like a fun time. I can’t wait to paint nails with Connor, although I’m not sure when I’m going to allow her to start. Much as I love beauty, I want her to be able to not care about things like that for as long as she can. Silly, I know, and probably an uphill battle. But I’m going to try.

Soooo naps here are still pretty good, but only if I wear her out. When she was teeny tiny I used to be able to put her down for a nap and she’d fall asleep no matter what, but now she needs to run at least half marathon before it’s even a consideration, LOL!

I have to share with you the bane of my existence lately: the school lunch. I try to pack her a healthy lunch along with a couple treats (like a TJ’s fruit leather or some cookies), and all the healthy stuff will come back. Maybe she’ll take a bite or two if I’m lucky. Of course the treats get eaten. Le sigh!

Girl, yes! School lunch- the struggle is real. Our 12 year old is the same way and I’m happy if the 15 year old eats at all during the day.

Try making the healthy stuff look fun, like making ‘kabobs’ out of lunch meat and cheese, rather than a sandwich. That might work for a week or two, lol.

Ya know, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I kinda miss those diaper days sometimes. Especially when I see those teeny, tiny newborn diapers. What I don’t miss is the “I’m interested in playing with my poop” phase! GIRL THAT WAS ROUGH.

The biggest obstacle for my brother is that he has Chronic Venous Insufficiency in his legs, and it will keep getting worse. His leg skin can split from being scraped through his clothes, and he’s at increased risk for blood clots if he stands still or sits still for extended periods. He’d rather work, and we’re looking into some programs, but we applied for disability for him just in case. We’re not sure he’s quite bad enough to qualify for that yet, though. We’re going to see if Voc Rehab can help, but they aren’t even taking applications till December.

Yeah, they playing with their own poop stage is no fun. Same for the stage where they learn to take off their own diapers and go potty wherever they are. Yuck!

Aaaw I kinda like the warty pumpkin! Though I would like it on someone ELSE’S porch, lol!

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation?
Not as dire as it could be. I was rocking 2-month-old polish that was looking seriously scraggly for WEEKS… finally removed that a week or two ago, and am now contemplating what my next steps will be. Profesh pedicure? Perhaps.
    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?
Yeah man. Mostly by rodents (pet ones, thankfully). Mice, rats… those were the big ones. I’ve also definitely gotten hit by a bird outside, too. And have at the very least had some close encounters with tiny humans.
    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?
My side eye is LEGENDARY. I so wish “side eye” was a FB emoticon reaction!
    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?
Hmm… I loathe (LOATHE I say) laundry and am not a big fan of the gym… but my tanning days are behind me, so I think I’ll bit the bullet and say gym! Get my workout on.
    5. Fish tail or French braid?
Aw, it totally depends on the situation! French braid for a quick ‘do, but fishtail is so refined and better for elegant looks.

Hi, Karen! Summer is slowly going away which is sad because that means my days in the outdoor arena are coming to a close. I love the outdoor arena, but the indoor one is a lot of fun at my new barn too.

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation?
My feet are clean? Does that count?

    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?
Yep, just the reality of rehabbing an abused dog and horses (although I mostly get out of the way with the horses.) Things happen, especially when they are ill.

    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?
I have a permanent resting BF, but I am apparently really good at the eye roll as well.

    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?
Just…give me the laundry, okay. I will do your towels to as I don’t like gyms (mirrors! DE and mirrors = bad) and tanning is bad when you have lupus.

    5. Fish tail or French braid?
    Depends on my mood.

100 days?! 100?! OMG, I don’t even have any idea on what I want for Christmas except, like, two things. Ha ha ha.

Uh, maybe I should think about that? Sigh.

Bree has been great! She volunteers to be a guinea pig (my behaviorist calls her a “guest”) for other shy dogs at shy dog class and she does really well and still has breakthroughs. We try to make it to as many walks as we can, but the morning ones are just killer. (NOT a morning person.) She really enjoys being pampered by her groomer. She really shows off her silly and sweet personality. She’s quite quiet. Barks rarely; I almost thought she didn’t possess the ability until I heard her barking at my dad while he was watering the flowers with a hose (she does NOT like the garden hose. She barks at it endlessly.)

I’m really working on her fear of children now, particularly my nephew. She does really well with not responding poorly to children on walks or when they are outside the window, but we’re still working on my nephew.

For Christmas I want a nap and a whole day all to myself. LOL Really, I don’t ask for much!

Bree sounds like she’s growing and blooming with your care. You are so patient with her, that’s wonderful. 🙂 I hope she and your nephew grow to love each other.

BTW I think you’ll appreciate this: Connor loves a cartoon about young girls and their horses in the wild west called Spirit (it’s on Netflix). I was wearing a tank top with the silhouettes of horses the other day, and she pointed at each of the horses (which she calls “hor-keys”), and then proceeded to do a long babbling toddler speech on each horse, ha ha!

HA HA HA I have seen the little photos for that show (I stubbornly won’t watch it because…the movie. I love the movie and I don’t want the movie ruined in my eyes. It’s a stubborn “This is a Katie thing.” Like sometimes I pretend the last book of a series doesn’t exist because it was s***. Or an epilogue…you get the idea.)

My nephew calls horses ‘orses. He went with us to the new barn a couple of weeks ago because there are mini-donkeys there (think Eeyore.) We didn’t know the other way to see them, only through the lesson horse barn at the time, and he was doing great until we got the the lesson barn and a horse named Candy stuck her head out to say hi. My nephew screamed and ran into my mom’s arms and preceded to say, “GO HOME! GO HOME!” at the top of his lungs as the size scared him (Candy is actually quite small for a horse; she’s near pony size.) The farrier saved the day by giving him an old horseshoe…well, T-Rex (said nephew’s online name) wouldn’t take it FROM him. My mom was given the shoe then he took it from my mom.

T-Rex finally realized I was riding and he wanted to watch, only to get squirrely every time the big horse (I was riding a HUGE horse named Quattro) rode near him…until he figured out I was going in circles essentially. Then he went, “YAY! K!” and threw his hands in the air each time I came around until I dismounted (then he ran into my mom’s arms and said crying and screaming resumed because big horsey!).

Hours later when my brother called, all was seemingly forgotten and T-Rex had told my brother how he had “taken a shoe off ‘orse” (and demonstrating how shoes go on horses…or he was trying it on. We aren’t sure to this day) and how “fun” it was there. Yet, we ask him if he wants to go see the horses, he says emphatically, “NO WAY!” (ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)

Mind you, he has been around horses since infancy. I’m not sure what happened between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2, but I guess he forgot how big horses are. I literally would bring him in the back and he would give whatever horse he wanted an apple. Silly nephew. XD

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation? I have the cutest polish on, it’s called Aria by ILNP. It’s a suuuuuper linear holo sky blue polish. I’ve been painting them myself and I hate it. I love giving myself manicures but hate giving myself pedicures.
    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you? I currently have four cats, a pug, two turtles, two snakes, and three fish. Plus two teens. Of course I’ve been pooped on!
    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll? Resting BF. There are times when I open my front facing camera and am scurred by the sight.
    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry? Ha! None!
    5. Fish tail or French braid? I suck so bad at braids, I want to be good at them, I’m just not. Double Dutch braids are so cute, but they are beyond my skill.

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation?

Girl, it ain’t good, and I have to do something because I’m going to Colorado on Friday for a wedding.

    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?

Definitely. Looking at you Quincy (RIP). He also once peed on me while sitting in my lap (though he was a baby bunny, to be fair)

    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?

    Side eye.

    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?

Gym! I hate laundry and gingers don’t tan.

    5. Fish tail or French braid?

Generally a French braid but my hair does not hold braids well.

That pumpkin creeps me out. I’m working out ideas for my costume for the Halloween aerial student showcase – I’m meant to be Medusa and I’m trying to figure out hair.

OK, so I’m not alone in thinking that pumpkin is super creepy! Thank goodness. For your hair, hmmm… Well, if you have $550 sitting around: check this out!

LOL ? I need to spend less than that and I feel like that might get in the way of doing aerial too.

I figured it might, LOL! I dunno, maybe if you put super strong gel and hairspray into your hair you could shape them into big snake like “S” shapes? I’d suggest painting them with a temporary hair color spray but some of those things aren’t all that temporary. I did a pink spray in my hair once and ended up with a permanent pink spot in my roots!

You’re welcome! Oh, so here’s another idea. There are these long, flexible rods that are used to curl hair. You could braid your hair (you’d probably have to rough it up first with a texturizing spray and backcombing), stick one of the rods into the braid, and then bend it into S shapes to look like snakes? Not sure how well it would work but in theory I think it could be doable.

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation?
Meh. I do my toes myself and exfoliate my feet at least weekly, so they look presentable, but I’m not thrilled with the lilac color I picked.

    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you?
    So. Many. Times.
I worked in vet med for a spell. Most notably, there was this pair of Italian greyhounds who were nervous poopers and hated having their nails trimmed. So my coworker and I are trying to trim their nails and we got nervous poo’d on. A lot.
And that’s why scrubs are the best. LOL

    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll?
    RBF all day!

    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?
Laundry. I really need to do laundry.

    5. Fish tail or French braid?
I love the look of a fish tail but I’m only capable of actually doing the French braid.

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger?
4 words: Halloween as a kid.
So much candy, so many strangers!

      Hi Christine,

Oh wow! I have often wondered what it’s like to work at a vet hospital. How long were you there for, and did you like the work?

I was there for about 2 years – I worked mostly front desk, but helped out “in back” when I could. I learned so much! I had worked as a pet sitter and dog walker for 3 years prior to that, so it was kind of an extension to my pet knowledge. I really liked it; but where I was there wasn’t really anywhere to grow and with chronic back and hip pain, handling dogs (and even fractious cats) started to become out of the question, sadly. I miss the constant dog and cat interaction (however, 3 cats at home makes up for it…), but I don’t miss 12 hour shifts and working at a 7-day-a-week business. It was such a good job: I was constantly learning and challenged, and it had so many hard parts to it, but I loved it.
And now I can do nail trims on all 3 of my cats in under 10 minutes! LOL

Wow, girl. Speedy cat manicuring is a *major* life skill! *props*

Do you still get to work with animals in any way with the work you do now?

P.S. Whenever I take Connor to one of the parks in town, I always see a guy walking with — kid you not — at least half a dozen dogs (I’m assuming he’s a professional) in all shapes and sizes. I am always in awe of how he manages them all, because I’d be a mess.

LOL I have no idea how the multi-dog walkers do it! The company I worked with was one household at a time, my max was 2 dogs and that was rare. I get tangled enough in one leash…
I’m an office manager for a large sales office…sooooo different animals? The running joke is I’m a zookeeper. But really, no animals anymore. I volunteer with a bird group, though – we assist getting birds injured downtown to a wildlife center & also collect dead birds as specimen for the Field Museum during migration seasons. (Nerd alert!)

Seriously that dude is a miracle! He and the dogs are always so calm, and when they all walk through the park, they glide as if on wheels. I really should get a picture or a video of him someday, or get him to tell me his life story, ha ha!

Since you’re a bird person I think you’ll appreciate this. I used to work for a utility company in San Francisco, and on the floor I worked on, there was a nest of peregrine falcons right outside of one of the windows! The falcons still nest on the upper floors of the building to this day (here’s a story if you want to read about them).

    LOVE peregrines! That’s so cool!!
We have one that nests by my office building and it’s why I got involved with the Bird Collision Monitors here – it likes to go after the pigeons here, and they hit our windows and end up injuring themselves and sitting on our terrace. The falcon is so fascinating to watch!

Yeah, it was really cool. When I was there, I’d pop and check on the babies a few times each day and would be *this close* to them.

The biggest birds I see nowadays are turkey vultures (we’re on a hill and I can get a good look at them, although to be honest they freak me out a little) and hawks.

How long have you been volunteering for that group?

    1. What’s your current pedicure situation? Um…sad. Really, really sad. I was able to do my nails a couple of times since babe was born 7 months ago but they look sad now.
    2. Has an animal ever pooped on you? I don’t think I’ve ever been pooped on. But a human child once rubbed his snot on me. And I’m saying a giant snot. I was also a child at this point.
    3. Resting BF, side eye, or eye roll? Resting BF.
    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry? Gym!
    5. Fish tail or French braid? Neither as I don’t know how to braid. Any good tutorials for people who are hopeless at hair?

    5. Fishtail or French braid?
My hair isn’t long enough at the moment for either lol

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger?
yes – yesterday actually lol a customer handed me one.

    BONUS TO YOUR BONUS:
That pumpkin is terrifying and looks like it shouldn’t be available for purchase… your toddler knows what’s up! She has very discerning pumpkin picking skills – I can already tell…

    4. Gym, tanning, or laundry?

    Always laundry it seems.

    5. Fish tail or French braid?

BONUS QUESTION: Have you ever taken candy from a stranger?

    No.

    PUMPKIN FACT!

Those pumpkins with the crazy outsides are from them having too much sugar in the squash! Or that’s what Martha Stewart told me!

    4. Off to the gym today in fact!
    5. I’m trash at braiding so I’ll take either one!

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
