So…what is the Monday Poll?
Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
I did! She arrived one Christmas morning, but it was after the initial Cabbage Patch Kid craze when parents were body-checking each other at Toys ‘R’ Us stores to get their hands on one of the dolls.
She still lives at my parents house, I think.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
OPI Chills are Multiplying (I’m three days into another seven-day nail experiment).
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
A loose black long-sleeved scoop-neck dress with a peach flower print. It had a separate little black clip in the back to cinch the waist, and I wore it with opaque black tights and black ankle boots… (Yes, I thought it was the sh*t, LOL!)
I wish I’d kept that dress so Connor could wear it someday. I held onto it through college, but then I donated it and most of the rest of my teenage wardrobe to a thrift shop in Davis right after graduation.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
GIRL…I don’t know with the level of petty treachery on those shows, but if enduring a bunch of ladies throwing wine at each other at lunch meant that I could grow my own multi-million-dollar side business selling frozen reduced-calorie non-alcoholic margarita mixes for cats, then HELL YEAH, I would most certainly find a way to make it work!
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Yes, I am! I mean, I’m not the type who busts out the pumpkins in August or anything (ha ha, I’ll wait till September), but I do love the holidays.
Happy Labor Day
I was driving the other day when someone on the radio said, “Why is it called Labor Day if you have the day off? Shouldn’t it be called Less Labor Day?”
Ha ha! 🙂 Hope you’re doing something fun.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Tatiana says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? Nope. I was in college when they came out. Besides they’re kinda creepy looking.
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Nothing.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? A plaid parochial school uniform skirt.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? Nope. Wouldn’t want to either. I’m all about my privacy.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Haven’t really thought about it. It seems too early. Trying to convince Dears Husband that we should go somewhere for Christmas. I’m not up to all the decorating, shopping and cooking fuss this year.
Karen says
May I suggest Hawaii for the holidays? Back in the day we spent a few Christmases on Oahu. There’s no other place quite like the beach at Christmas. 🙂
Tatiana says
Yeah, we did that one year. Dear Husband’s boss let us use his house on the windward side of Oahu. The place was so gorgeous, I actually cried when I got on the plane because I didn’t want to come home.
Not sure what state the islands are in right now after all the rain they’ve had from hurricane Lane.
Karen says
My heart will always belong to that side of Oahu; we spent a lot of time there (Kaneohe) when El Hub’s parents lived there. Did you guys stay in Kailua?
P.S. Last time I went to Oahu I cried on the van ride back to the airport. It was me, El Hub, Connor and my mom, dad and brother, and it was the first time in probably 20 years where my immediately family was together for an extended period of time. I full-on had a breakdown in front of a bunch of Japanese tourists, LOL.
Michele DiCola says
Hi Karen ,
The best part of retirement is I have the whole week off . Tomorrow we are hitting the shore for a summer rental .
My daughter had a cabbage patch kid and she happily sits in her bedroom along w all her dolls.
Nails : French dip powder ! Love it ?
No Real Housewives for me ! Maybe a Kardashian mom
Teen self wore , jeans, black stockings , black eyes and black hair ( dreaded by my dad)
Excited about Halloween ?!
Sometimes thanksgiving and Christmas ?
Karen says
Hi Michele,
I bet that’s one of many perks! How long have you been retired? Both my parents are retired and they’re loving life, LOL!
Stephanie Smith says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? I did! I had diapers for it too, but I didn’t like that they were spendy and it felt like I was wasting money. I wasn’t a big doll person though. My daughters had them too.
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Nothing right now. I just took off Moonshine Mani’s “The Naughty List” a fantastic charcoal grey linear holo.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? Scrunchies. And I had a pair of overall shorts that I lived in. I need to get another pair. I’d wear one overall clipped and left the other one down. Man, the 90’s were a great time!
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? I’m too lazy for the hair/makeup/wardrobe. And I’m pretty boring, I’m not into cat fights. But it would be fun to be around women so petty and catty, to see it but not participate in it.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Yes! I love the holidays, it’s pretty, the mood is always fun, it’s not a million degrees, I’m looking forward to it!
Karen says
Hi Stephanie,
I wore my overalls like that too. Mine were dark blue acid washed Guess, LOL! I thought I was the stuff.
Hope you’re having a great Monday so far!
Chelsea says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
Yes! He had red hair and his name was Gabriel.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
Nothing!
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
I feel like my style changed a lot from the beginning to the end of high school. I wore the most ridiculously low rise pants throughout though.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
Definitely not!
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Yes! I love costumes and turkey.
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
Your answer to #5 sounds like something Tabs would say, LOL! He loves costumes and turkey too! Could he be your soul mate? Hmm…
Chelsea says
We obviously have to meet face to face and find out!
Suzanne C says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
Yes, two of them.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
A really janky Essie clear polish that has nearly chipped entirely off in under two days. Everyone goes so crazy for Essie, but I’ve been really disappointed every time I’ve tried one of their products.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
Steel toe work boots, with jeans, a tee, and a navy or black plaid flannel shirt. (During the Nirvana phase) Or something like the outfit you described, which sounds very teenaged Kate on This Is Us. (If you haven’t watched that, go binge both seasons right now. Just trust me on this one. You will Love. The. Living. Daylights. out of it.)
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
I would rule that show, which is why I would never be on it. I have to stay far away from that side of myself.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
I organized my decorating closet today, so that I’ll be ready to decorate my Fall mantle on the 22nd. Soooo… maybe just a little excited, lol.
Karen says
Hi Suzanne,
I’ve watched a few eps of that show and totally know the style you’re talking about! I have to pace myself though with it because it’s kind of emotionally overwhelming, LOL!
Re: Essie. The Gel Coutures are pretty good! Have you tried that line yet?
Suzanne C says
Mom, my aunt, and I (we’re all watching together and texting) were pacing ourselves with This Is Us, too, until a certain point and then it was just not possible to stop, lol. Can’t. Look. Away. So. Many. Feelings.
I haven’t seen the Essie Gel Coutures. I’ll have to look for them. Maybe there’s something Fall-appropriate! I’m feeling a nice dark berry coming on.
Karen says
Oh, that’s so cute! So you guys watch it when it is on live TV, huh? We cancelled our cable and subscribe to Hulu so I have to wait until it’s available. Hulu is definitely more convenient but I miss having that kind of group experience, you know?
The Gel Coutures came out a while ago, and I have a few colors that are my go-tos. There’s a dark blue called surrounded by Studs that’s very fall. Spiked with Style is pretty too. I swatched a few a while back if you want to see some shades (here’s the link).
Suzanne C says
No, we ‘cut the cord’ a few years back, so we’re watching on Hulu, too. We came late to the TIU party and just started watching in April. We all watch the same episodes within a couple of days of each other, then text about a million times about what happened, lol.
I like Surrounded by Studs. (And the pancakes in the same post! We’re having waffles and homemade sausage for supper.)
Lulle says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
No, I don’t think those were a thing in France. I mean they look familiar but I don’t even remember what they were called…
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
Nothing, I haven’t found time to do my nails in… months?
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
Very, very long jeans that would slowly get ripped at the bottom from grazing the ground. Timberland boots knockoffs. Black velvet chokers.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
I can’t stand drama so there is absolutely no way!
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Not really? We don’t live close to any family so it’s always on us to drive for a full day for big holidays, and after about 5 years of doing that, it gets old. We’re considering traveling somewhere for fun instead – but holidays are the worst time for that because prices go up like crazy.
Karen says
Hi Lulle,
How about Hawaii for the holidays? I just mentioned this to Tatiana earlier here in the comments. There’s nothing like the beach in the tropics during Thanksgiving or Christmas. 🙂
Rachel Runyan says
Happy Labor Day!
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? No. I was in high school when they came out. We would have been too poor to get one, anyway.
2. What are you wearing on your nails? NexGen nails. It’s a cobalt blue with silver and holographic microglitter.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? A long emerald green pull-over sweater with a giant black griffin design on front and back.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? I hate reality TV and drama. No way.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Always! I love the holidays! My kids and I still dress up in costumes to give out candy at Halloween. I’m *all* about Christmas lights, too! My younger brother is living with us now, so it’ll be great to have him join in on the fun. He’s a good cook, too!
Karen says
Happy Labor Day, Rachel!
How nice that your brother is living with you now. It’s always nice to have family around. Will he be with you guys for a while?
Rachel Runyan says
Yes, he’ll be with us probably forever. He was taking care of our mom before she passed, so he no longer is in their rental. He has a degenerative disease in the veins in his legs, so he may need himself within the next few years. He’s a sweet guy and worked hard to care for Mom while I was raising my kids and couldn’t, so we don’t mind giving him the spare bedroom and caregiving for him later if he needs it.
Erin says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
No, someone made a knock off, it was sweet but hideous and I didn’t even want one at the time.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
Au naturelle
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
Oh I had a few things, a beautiful dress slightly sheer with a faded floral print, a vintage halston trench, a few sundresses with delicate straps… I was quite fashionable but it a dark way…
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
They’d have to pay me a lot of money to be that fake!
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Yes and no. I am excited for them, I just wish a windfall of cash would drop in my lap!
Kate & Bree says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
I had a few.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
Nothing. Nail polish and horses just don’t mix!
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
Message t-shirts! I have a few, but they say stuff like “Let the horse be with with you,” which I got at the Tempel Lipizzan show and it just had to be done. I mean, horse puns.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
Noooooooo. I have no patience for drama. Nope.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Nope. Holidays mean people! It’s great training for Bree, but I’m more of the “I want peace, quiet and time with the horses,” person.
Cara Cozy says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
Yes, I did! I have very few memories of it though.
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
Nothing :'( I need a manicure super bad but it’s on the backburner at the moment.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
I was a teen when Emo and Scene kids were a thing! Side swept bangs with bootcut, low rise jeans and more striped apparel than should be legal outside a retro jail musical…
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
NEVER! I’d be too anxious. That’s way more stress than it should be to be a multi-million dollar housewife lol
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Halloween is my holiday! Everyone’s mad that the pumpkins came out in August I’m over here living for it and picking out my fall candles haha I love seeing little kids running around in their silly costumes and driving their parents nuts on sugar highs.
Lydia says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? I did! I also had a number of hand-me-down dolls (some of which might have been made by aunt and not actual Cabbage Patch dolls)…but the one that I remember the most was the Snack Time doll. Maybe you remember this one… After they came out, there was an issue with the doll “eating” kids’ hair. I feel like you really had to try to stick your hair in there, but who nows. I never got my hair stuck though…
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Nothing. They need some serious TLC, ASAP.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? I guess it would depend on at what point as a teen… Rolled up strips of bandanas as bracelets and necklaces. Those weird tattoo bracelets and necklaces. Anything glittery. Thrift store tees. Hollister. Denim mini skirts with leggings. Doc Martens. Delias.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? Definitely not.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Definitely so. I love the holidays that are coming up. I’m one of those people that a lot seem to not enjoy… I’ve pretty much been waiting to start decorating and grab all the fun fall things for months now!
Michelle says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? Yes! My mom entered a contest at The base commissary and won. We barely avoided a small mob just leaving with it.
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Good hand cream. I am finishing my L’occitone but am looking for a good replacement. After this summer’s behavior, I won’t be repurchasing, so EL, Dior, someone has to have an awesome hand cream.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? Jeans. I didn’t have to think about clothing decisions (except on Thursday-NJROTC uniform day) and it was jeans and t shirt. I wanted more variety but didn’t have the budget or time to figure it out until later.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? No! Don’t have the time for crazy.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Yes! Rosh Hashana is next week. Already saying the extra daily prayers and planning my meals. Can’t wait!
Hope this finds you well!
Barb says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? – Yes. When they were all the rage and you couldn’t find any in the store, my dad got me one – ummm … off the streets. He worked for the gas company and would be in all different neighborhoods digging up streets, etc. He doesn’t know how these guys got them but he bought one for me for Christmas. He was the little bald one and I named him Tom.
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Avalon by A-England. Beautiful purple. If you check out my Instagram, I’ve got pics posted.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? Those banana clips in my permed hair.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? No. I hate drama and cattiness.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? Yes!! I put up my fall decorations yesterday and I love this time of year. Halloween to New Years is my favorite time of the year!
Karen says
Hi Barb,
I love that story of your Cabbage Patch kid, LOL! Hey, at least your dad didn’t have to fight anyone in the store to get Tom, LOL!
I want to see your swatches… Please give me your handle on Instagram again (I’m so sorry, I can’t remember it off the top of my head).
Barb says
Thanks, it’s barb_mcgregor.
Kim says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid? Yes, I had a preemie. I sewed an outfit for it in home ec. HAHA!
2. What are you wearing on your nails? Nada.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time? Z Cavaricci (pants and a peach button down shirt), lots of Esprit stuff, including navy pants with white pinstripes. Everything was either tight in the ankle or pegged (for the young kids, that’s the bottoms folded tight and then rolled up). Lots of Umbro soccer shorts, too. Usually with cut off long underwear bottoms under them. Oh, and spandex bottoms for whatever reason (I had an Adidas pair that I loved). CB jackets were pretty big, too, for a while. In Jr High, there were a lot of Sergio Valente and Jordache jeans. They had to have the fancy stitching on the pockets.
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast? I’ve never watched but I feel confident that I could.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays? No, not yet. The weather is still like summer here so I’m in no hurry for the cold. Though, it is the most wonderful time of the year. 🙂
Janki says
1. Did you ever have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
I had two girls- Deena Rochelle and Samantha Dyann. It was a few years after the madness. I always loved stuffed animals. I used to make them clothes. My mom always commented on how hideous the dolls were. It was like she was insulting my kids!
2. What are you wearing on your nails?
I’m doing the gels and ventured into a light lilac shade vs the normal nudes.
3. Something your teen self wore all the time?
Easy answer- plaid skirt. Additionally I’d add an Eddie Bauer squall jacket (grew up in SF).
4. Could you cut it as a member of the Real Housewives cast?
I’ve never seen a single episode! But since I am a huge people pleaser and hate anyone to be mad at me, I’m guessing no.
5. Are you excited about the upcoming holidays?
Yes! Just resting will be perfect. I’m hoping for a mini staycation or something. Our family is in the middle of an election so by then, all results will be in! Fingers crossed.
