Festival Makeup: Yes or No?

I think that everyone in my timeline last weekend was at Coachella, which reminds me — festival makeup. Lots o’ dots, crazy lip colors and shapes and graphic designs painted all over faces.

Are you into it? I like a lot of the looks I see on other people, but it’s not really my style. It depends on whether I’m actually at a music festival.

How about you? Festival makeup: yay or nay?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Festival makeup looks gorgeous, in my opinion. It looks super different and unique and maybe it won’t be every day but once in a while it’s good to have fun 🙂

I just keep wondering, where did the dots come from? Like who started that/decided that festival= put dots all over your face? I don’t mind a different look at a festival like that, just curious about the dots.

      Hi Erin,

I think the dots are mostly tribal-makeup inspired. Have you ever been to a music festival? Last one I went to was in the early 2000s (YIKES).

Festival makeup looks awesome but when I went to Coachella it was so hot I sweat off whatever makeup I tried to wear!

      Hi Rachel,

I’ve never been to Coachella, but I figured since it’s in the desert it must be really hard to keep the makeup actually on! At least it was a dry heat, though, right? I think humid heat is 1000X worse.

Definitely, and at night it cooled off nicely.

I love the idea for performances! I haven’t been to a legit, go-out-into-a-field-and-spend-days-listening-to-music festival in AGES. Maybe someday soon, though! In the meantime, I’ll have to see about rocking some of the swirls, dots and crazy colors on stage.

Nay. When I go to an outdoor festival, I’m going to sweat a lot and need to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Adding makeup to that equation seems like insanity to me. I just wear sunscreen and bring some face wipes to wipe away the sweat, dirt, and old sunscreen before I reapply.

And your eye makeup in that picture is amazing, Karen. I love that

Umm, I have never been to a festival like that, Maybe just maybe I would try it if I see it suits me well. I like emerald green maybe a kind of poison ivy inspired makeup?

It totally depends! I’d probably not wear feathers, flowers, and war paint to the grocery store. I wear a statement lip to the mailbox! It just all depends on the venue!

I’m headed to Coachella this weekend! I have no plans to go crazy with the makeup because I’m sure the heat will more than likely melt it off (UD all-nighter spray, please do your thing). If I actually do put anything on my face, it’ll be my BB cushion with SPF, lip color, and maybe some shadow and mascara. But that’s it.

I like festival makeup but I don’t go to festivals. Just gotta watch out for some of the culturally appropriative stuff. I was thinking about doing the flowered eyeliner for a show this weekend.

Same problem! I love such artistic looks on others, but, on me, I like them to be more subtle and wearable.

If I were at a festival, I think I would at least try it. But here at the office? I think I’ll pass on the blue lips and sparkly freckles.

I love festival makeup, although I think it has kind of become an umbrella term over time and each look doesn’t necessarily appeal to me. For instance, some of the work and time it takes to apply these super hashed-out makeup looks for Coachella is not appealing to me at all, as impressive as the end results may be. I go to smaller, indie festivals all summer long and need to be able to work with a single small makeup bag (after all, hiking into my campsite to stay for 3 days calls for a light load), a couple or no brushes, and a hand mirror- I am too busy festivaling to paint intricate renaissance art on my face! So I guess I am a minimalist with festival makeup, which i know many others are, too. Something more out-there and colorful to defy my everyday routine, but still pretty toned down.

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
