Do you? I had a friend who did this every time she sat down for a meal (or even before she had a cup of coffee), and as much as I can appreciate the “why” behind it, I just can’t be bothered… Granted, sometimes I wonder know how much MAC Russian Red I’ve consumed along with all those spoonfuls of Nutella…but still, old habits are hard to break.
How about you? Do you take your lipstick off before you eat?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Oh no! Is it gross that I have NEVER removed my lipstick before I’ve eaten. I had never even thought about it until I read this post. If I’m hungry, I just eat. I guess I should be more cognizant of what goes in my body because lord knows I probably have at least a 1/2 tube of Mac Coral Bliss living in this body somewhere…

That is so very old school and I should know because I’m old! LOL Several decades ago (30’s, 40’s, 50’s), lipstick was quite greasy as was most makeup at that time. It made perfect sense to remove your lipstick before eating or drinking because otherwise it tended to smear on your lips and teeth. The lipstick of the day also left difficult to remove lip prints on cups and glasses which were unsightly and which had to be scrubbed off when they were washed. When I say remove lipstick, I don’t mean wiping it off completely. Only the excess was gently and discreetly wiped with a tissue—just enough so it didn’t end up on utensils. Removing the heavy lipstick of the day before eating or drinking was considered good manners.
Flash forward to the present: Although non-transferring, long wearing lip products are quite popular, there are still plenty of lip products which have a lot of slip. When wearing something of that nature, I think it makes sense for a woman to discreetly (like before she gets to the table) blot her lipstick to avoid transferring it to her teeth or utensils.

Thanks for the history lesson Eileen! I had no idea 🙂

Yup. I always take mine off before I eat, otherwise it looks disgusting – half on, half off, possibly all over my face. I’m not risking that humiliation! I think with regular lipstick, it comes off so easily that maybe you could skip this step. But with the invention of liquid lipsticks, they are much harder to get off and though some of it will stay in place, some of it won’t. And I’m sorry, I just cannot deal with that look. It’s either all the way on or it’s all the way off. I can’t deal with the half-on lipstick look!

I’ve never even thought of removing lipstick before I eat.

Sometimes, esp if Im wearing something in yo face that needs to be pristine. But it’s becsuse I’m vain, not because I gave one thought to the concept of eating it….

I remove before I eat or drink whenever possible and reapply after the meal. I’m not a fan of having lipstick marks on my drink cup, even if it’s disposable. I also don’t like the half lipstick look, which is more obvious if you’re wearing a dark or heavily applied non-sheer bright color. I recall someone specific every time I think of this as she loves a bright matte berry and she leaves it on and I can’t stop staring at her mouth while we eat. It attracts negative attention, so why not avoid that by discreetly wiping off the color before the meal? I’m not really concerned about ingesting the lipstick but I’d wipe everything off completely anyway after the meal so I can reapply on clean lips.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I have never considered taking off my lipstick before I eat or drink. Now, that is something for me to think about. I am sure I have plenty of MAC “O” in my system. Not sure if I will now take my lipstick off. Must do my research to see what the effects of long-term eating of lipstick will do to my body.

It could come out to 8 lbs of lipstick over a woman’s life. Don’t know how this was figured out but ew.

LOL Lipstick has to be made with ingredients that are safe for consumption. I mean, in small doses at least LOL. It’s not meant to be eaten whole. But you are going to ingest lipstick. It happens. It goes on the part of your body that is the portal to your insides haha. I don’t necessarily remove it before eating, but if there’s still a lot of lipstick on my lips I’ll wipe it or blot it with a napkin. Cuz I don’t exactly enjoy a side of lipstick flavour with my food.

If I’m wearing a dark or really bright color I blot before I sit down to a meal, but not for snacks or drinks. But remove it? I don’t bother. Like a lot of other stuff in life, I don’t let the worn off lipstick look bother me. I can always reapply it after a meal.
Chelsea says
I don’t wear lipstick often and I never do!
Cindy says
Never! I’m one of those people who wears bright bright mattes and it NEVER moves until I take it off at the end of the day. I eat a certain way so I don’t mess it up, but I touch it up after if I have to. If I wipe off the type of lipstick I wear and then try to reapply it, it will never look the same!

Funny you are asking this question , we are just coming home from a family wedding . I think I reapplied my lipstick ? at least 6 times but never wiped it off before I ate and probably never will .
Have a great night .

I can’t be bothered by it. Should we be taking our lipstick off other than for the purpose of not getting them onto the silverware and glasses? Health-wise? Never thought about it.
Shannon says
Naw, man. I usually end up wiping it off halfway through a meal because I can tell it’s all sliding off…
LindaLibraLoca says
No. I am happy when I remember to reapply it after eating.
Lorraine says
My lips don’t hold any lipstick, ever. I am more concerned about reapplying it often. Sometimes I wipe it off a cup or a wine glass when I am dining out, or visiting other’s homes, but when I am at home that is how I know which cup is mine! Besides, I am the one washing the cups.
Rachel Runyan says
Yes, if it’s a lip color that is prone to smearing and staining (usually bright reds, vampy shades, and my beloved dark blues, greens, and blacks).
Otherwise, I don’t bother. I assume if they’re lipsafe, it’s not going to hurt to ingest a small amount here and there.
