Typical of what I wear on any given day. KIDDING! (This was the dress I wore to the Emmys a few years ago.)
Fall means fall color, which brings me to this question I ask every once in a while: To what extent do you coordinate your makeup to match your outfits? Like, do you ever plan what makeup you’re going to wear with an outfit the night before? Or, do you typically make your apparel choices on the fly, with a blatant disregard for lipstick and/or eyeshadow color?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Historically, I’ve been more of a “Let’s see how I’m feeling today” kinda girl, both with clothes and makeup. I’ve probably only coordinated my makeup/clothes a handful of times in all my years of face painting; however, I like the idea in theory. I like the idea of planning everything the day before, especially the day before something important.
Methinks I’ll give it a try sometime soon.
How about you? Do you coordinate your makeup to match your clothes? And if you do, how far do you go with it?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Happy humpday. ?

I usually choose what makeup I want to do and then choose my clothes that I think will complement. Or I choose my clothes then pick my makeup. It just depends on whatever I’m more excited about for the day. I have a hard time if I think things will clash like I can’t bring myself to do a really warm brown red toned eye look with a pink shirt or dress. It just looks wrong to me.

Well, before kids, all the time! I used to work in an attorney’s office and one day after being there for months, one of them said “wow your green eyeshadow matches your shirt.” I was thinking duh, I did it almost daily back then ?. After 2 kids (one of them being 2 right now), I’m on a similar path with you Karen, neutrals and minimal time frames for makeup. I still throw on colorful liner but that’s about it after two kids. I have busted out some old MAC green and purple palettes lately that I put together over the years but those are so old I wonder about the expiration. I’ll still be wearing them when I’m 70 though ?

I did this only yesterday. I was wearing a purple dress and my eyeshadow ended up with a pale brow highlight, a taupe all-over wash with purple shading into green on the lids.

My wardrobe is pretty boring with mostly neutral colors, so my bright or shimmery eyeshadows or lipsticks don’t match my clothing. There are a few dresses that I will coordinate with my make up, like today I am wearing all blue.

Oh, I do it every day. My brown makeup always matches my black outfit! HAHA! Kidding, of course. I did think about my lipstick color on Saturday, though. I wore a black dress (stunning, I know) but it has an aubergine stripe on the bottom so I was looking for a lipstick that would not be to red or pink or clashy. In the end, I couldn’t find my black honey – until much later in the day – but I did actually think about it. 🙂

I don’t coordinate too much. Most of my makeup is neutral so it goes with pretty much everything I wear. If I ever go out for a special event (which is rare) I might do more of a smokey eye or bold lip.

Great photo!
Not really unless I’m wearing something lavender. Then I won’t use colors with brown tones because they look funky. I’ll generally go with neutrals and a berry colored lipstick. That looks better with lavender to me.
If I’m not wearing lavender, not so much. Then I just wear whatever I want to.

I try to color-coordinate. Mostly it’s my eyeliner and shadow. Lipstick changes during the day – may start with a red, nude or rusty orange depending on what I’m wearing. Morphs with my mood and time constraints during the day – usually ending with a sheer wash of gloss ….

I definitely start wearing my plum collection of lipsticks ? beginning in September.
I heard it will be warm

I remember that great dress and this amazing photo from a couple of years ago. Go girl!

Most of my clothes are black or gray, so usually coordinating isn’t an issue for me.
Often I’ll pick a color out of a design, or coordinate my lipstick or eyeliner with my clothing. Usually, though, I just make sure I don’t clash and wear whatever I feel like.

I stick to neutral makeup mostly so any matching is only coincidental. I work with someone that matches her eye makeup faithfully, and she mostly wears brights and neons. It can be a little scary.

I usually plan my work clothes the weekend before. We can dress casual if there aren’t important meetings, so that’s the main reason I plan ahead. Based on my planned outfit for the day, I color coordinate my makeup that morning. However, once I get to my closet, I sometimes change my mind and then my makeup as absolutely no coordination with my outfit.

I had to chuckle when I read this post. I’m totally obsessive about matching my makeup with my outfit! I usually have my outfit that I’m going to wear the next day out and I’ll plan my makeup colors around the outfit choice. Or I’ll plan my outfit choice around my makeup! I briefly tried to not match makeup with what I was going to wear, but somehow it felt off.
Michelle Liberman says
Because I have more makeup than sense, i can match my makeup to pretty much any of my clothes, but, I battle the urge. We were so match-y match-y in the 80s! I try to limit myself to coordinating warm or cool tones. Although, sometimes I just can’t help myself. I have been known to rock an orange/cobalt layered tank with an orange and blue eye look from my Electric palette!
(But just for farting around on a Saturday). ?

Only to the extent that I will not wear the bright orange lipstick when I wear a bright green top, other than that just I just wing it.

I like your style

Most days…not at all lol but if I know I’m wearing something particularly bright or have a certain occasion that calls for “classic makeup” I keep it pretty neutral toned

You look like a prima ballerina with that pointed toe jump!

i have dark neutral clothes so it does not matter what i wear.

Nah, matchy matchy isn’t my thing. I wear whatever colours I want, regardless of season

I sometimes match my makeup to my outfit but it’s rare for me really!
