Your Discontinued Faves?

May 30th, 2019 by Karen 24 Comments

joico co wash moisture

Contrary to popular belief, the most powerful magic words are not “abracadabra” or “alakazam.”

No, the most powerful magic words are “fifty percent off.”

I found my favorite foaming co-wash slashed to half price at Ulta last weekend. Unfortunately, as I celebrated with a well-placed booty pop, I realized — OH, NO! — that they were on the same shelf where they keep the soon-to-be discontinued products.

As you know, I’ve been trying to embrace the Marie Kondo life, so I haven’t been hoarding beauty backups as of late, but girl…I’ve gone through three of these bottles in the last six months, so I know they’ll get used.

So…I got the last three bottles on the shelf. 🤭

What are your discontinued faves?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I can’t think of any, to be honest. I had a perfume, back in the days, that I loved and that got discontinued, but if I would smell it now I would probably hate it. Back then I was into really heavy, sweet scents and they give me a headache now.

My all time discontinued fav: Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Bronzing Veil in Tropical Nighrs. They last forever but I hauled 4 from Sephora last summer. Clinique Guava Stain lipstick. Wore it for years…poof gone 😢

There have been so many long lost products through the decades. My absolute favorite discontinued products are Suave Milk and Honey shampoo and conditioner. It had milk proteins, honey, and jojoba oil in it, My hair grew faster and my scalp was flake free. Plus the set made my hair smell good. Then they reformulated the set by taking out the jojoba oil making the products less effective. Then, they discontinued them all together.

I have never been able to find a dupe for L’Oréal Wear Extraordinaire Sheer Sizzle Nail Polish. It was a pretty shade of gold.

L’Oréal Glossy Volume shampoo and conditioner were great for me and they’re gone. It was nice because they made my hair glossy without weighing it down. I also really loved JASON Naturals Henna Hi Lights shampoo and conditioner. Finally, Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion was discontinued a few years ago and replaced with Clarifying Lotion 1.0 which is not nearly as good and makes my skin burn and I’m still salty. The original was one of the best things to help with my skin.

Anytime I like a scent at Bath and Body Works it gets discontinued. Cherry Blossom, Wild Madagascar Vanilla, Forever Red, all gone! Luckily, they’ve been bringing some of them back for their semi-annual sales or random online sales, so I’ve been trying to snatch them up then.

I’m so bummed Bath and Body Works no longer sells Forever Sunshine fragrance. I went through two bottles of it and now they no longer make it. I should have bought back ups but sometimes stuff is gone before you get the chance. I’m hoping they will re-release it!

OPI Cinnamon Sweet, it’s my signature red nail polish. Also anytime I find a gluten free product that I love, my supermarket will no longer stock it. I am certain the supermarket has it out for me (or I might be the only person buying it). My favourite sugar free yoghurt has been on sale for the past like 2 months continuously, it makes me very worried. I have a list of discontinued food that I seriously miss, it’s actually ridiculous. Thankfully I haven’t been wearing makeup for too many years so I don’t have too many discontinued faves.

I’m still trying to work through Pureology’s Volumizing Shampoo disco. I tried their Fullfyl replacement and hated it. I see they have something new now (or repackaged). I’ll have to give it a whirl. I’d 100% have bought the entire shelf of any fave that I knew was being discontinued! Three bottles isn’t bad. Definitely not hoarding. 😉

Mac copperplate and typographic eyeshadow! Those were my faves for a warm grey, smoky eye (I hate sparkly or even shimmer grey eyeshadows in me, so copperplate was perfect!) I also have a feeling the extra dim. E/s are going too- I have one backup already but I might get another of “Sea Worship” which is literally the prettiest color ever for my eyes. My favourite body care company always seems to discontinue my fave scents, too. No more blossom berry (which is how I imagine faeries smell) or lavender bubble bath for me 😕 btw, three bottles of something you use that often is totally not hoarding.

It was a big mistake to discontinue those Matte 2 formula. They were divine. But I’m not sure they are doing away with the extra dimension shadows. They just released new shades!

Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector SPF 30, I’m still wondering why they stopped making this wonderful eye cream with sun protection and continue to sell the mediocre avocado eye cream… another gem Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrate Recovery Boosting Treatment. Also, I wanted to try the Sheer blending brush from Paula Dorf and the Suqqu S eyeshadow brush, both out of production. I would love to see old MAC brushes coming back. When NARS came with new eyeshadow duos, I thought they would produce again Rajasthan e/s duo, but alas no.

My favorite discontinued product was Bobbi Brown’s Moisture Rich Foundation (SPF 15). It was the only foundation I wore for years. When it was discontinued, I hoarded it, especially when it went on sale for 30% off. I actually used my last bottle a year ago. I haven’t found anything to replace it, however, NARS Sheer Glow comes pretty close.

So many products. A L’Oreal EverCreme shampoo and conditioner that was reformulated and isn’t as moisturizing or conditioning as it once was. Armani Sensi perfume. Urban Decay Naked 1 palette. NARS Charlotte Gainsbourg Hydrating Glow Tint (Ok, yeah this one was a LE product. But how was I supposed to know I’d fall in love with it?)

I’m sure there are many but I cannot think of them. I try to not be loyal to products. But one that comes to mind is the Maybelline Line Stylist Eyeliner in Bronze Gleam. It was the perfect skinny bronze gel liner. Lasted forever. Super easy to use. Gave the most precise line. They now call it the Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil but it only comes in black and charcoal. Still trying to find a bronzey eyeliner that compares!

After much thought, I came up with a few. First, Revlon Outrageous Shampoo/Conditioner. I remember when Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer were the spokeswomen. Wanted luscious hair like them.

And the OG version of Maybelline Super Stay Foundation. It had primer on one side and foundation on the other. When you pumped, you got the perfect blend of primer and foundation. It was a super long lasting foundation for my oily skin. Bonus Jennifer Aniston used it or so I thought:)

I’ve had so many products I love get discontinued, I almost want to buy 20 of whatever it is I’m loving at the moment because if I love it, I know it’s going to be discontinued soon. I think it was Conair that made a shampoo many years ago that was perfect for my then-damaged hair, but of course after about the third time I used one up, it had been discontinued and nowhere to be found. I feel like I have the touch of doom for any product that I use and love. It’s like a signal to the company to quit making it. Sometimes I can find a suitable replacement, but most times not.

So many over the past few years. Off the top of my head: UD Electric Palette, UD Naked Basics Palette, NARS Lhasa, NYX CC Cream in Green Light/Medium, Tina Tarantino’s makeup line, e.l.f. HD Lifting Concealer in Brightening (a ton of e.l.f. stuff, actually), MUFE Artist Shadows (OG formula), and Pacifica’s Mexican Cocoa fragrance. Going further back, the Revlon Street Wear line and Maybelline Wet Shine Diamonds line.

Paula Dorf Perfect Illusion. It was my HG lip primer! The only one that comes close is Urban Decay Ultimate Ozone. If they discontinue that, fuggedaboudit!

Bobbi Brown Nude Finish Tinted Moisturizer in medium to dark tint. My shade, medium to dark tint is not longer available. So although the product still exists, but my color is gone. I wore this color for over 15 years in various versions of the product. Because I hoard and buy multiples of things I like, I not bought any in over a year. When I went back to replenish, the shade was discontinued and sold out. Oh well, I guess its back to NC42 Studio Fix.

The two products I am still in mourning for are Dior Capture Totale loose powder and Chanel Rouge Coco in Amant. Both discontinued years ago and I still miss them.

Philosophy Purity bar cleanser. It was perfect for traveling.
Philosophy microdelivery purifying peel. Fantastic 1-3 minute treatment.
Bliss Unscented high intensity hand cream. Hopefully they’ll bring this back.

L’Oreal Lumi Cushion Foundation. I’m on my last one but it’s not going to last much longer. And Becca cream contour and highlight duo. The contour is the perfect color and consistency and I haven’t found anything like it yet. 😔

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
