How Often Do You Get Your Hair Cut?

May 1st, 2009 by Karen 126 Comments

karen-new-hair

I must confess, I don’t do it as regularly as I should. I finally got it cut yesterday (see above!) for the first time since last June. YIKES! I blame it on laziness and the fact that it’s long, which means I can let it get scraggly without it bothering me too much. Now that I have bangs, though, I have to get better about scheduling regular trims.

How often do you cut your hair? Do you go in for regularly scheduled cuts or whenever it strikes your fancy?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Indian Girl,

It’s a little bit of work but it doesn’t take too long. In this pic I used a curling iron with a big barrel to do the top and the sides, and that took about 20 minutes. I have wavy hair, so what I plan to do is to wash it at night and then let it air dry. In the morning I’ll spritz it with a curl reactivating spray and then curl it like this. 🙂

When you get your hair cut you’ll have to tell me… I want to hear how it goes. 🙂

You look gorgeous Karen! I love the waves you have in your hair…I have naturally curly hair, and when I straighten it and use a curling iron it’s next to impossible for it to hold:S Any tips? thanks!

    Hi Kam,

It helps to have product in it before you curl. Have you tried spraying hair spray on the pieces before popping them in the curling iron? It totally helps keep the curl. 🙂

      Hi Flora,

Aren’t guys funny? Whenever I actually get my butt to the salon El Hub ALWAYS yells, “Don’t cut it too short!,” as I walk out the door.

I bet your long hair looks really pretty! Maybe just go in for a quick trim? Split ends can be such a pain…

Aww Karen, you look so nice! This cut makes you look nice and refreshed 🙂 I can’t seem to keep long hair, I always get bored with it and end up cutting it. Funny thing is, most people like my hair shorter, they think it suits me better *shrugs*. But rock those bangs girl, work it!

Yah, I hear ya. Ten years ago I chopped mine off and it took forever to grow it out because I’d get bored and end up cutting it.

I almost didn’t recognize you, Karen!

I got my hair re-layered and cut on April 13 (I had to go waaaaaaaaaay back in your blog to find that comment). I could never keep my fringe the length yours is at. I’d drive myself insane. Mine is typically kept at the eyebrows and it gets longer on each side of my face.

I get my hair trimmed all over once every three or four months; bangs, typically every other month. My hair is very, very healthy but my fine hair tends to show split and dead ends like deer in the headlights. It’s not pretty.

It does seem no matter what state my hair is in, I always get compliments on three areas of my hair–my hair color, how stick straight it is and the “hair commercial” shininess (hair stylist’s words, not mine). Technically though, even the most naturally straight hair has a curl. Mine likes to do this weird flippy thing on the ends (one side flips in, one side flips out). I turn red everytime. >.<

P.S. Why are my comments always so long? I need a censor thing on my fingers.

I remember your hair from that pic of you at a dance. You’re so lucky to have it so shiny and straight, for real! I spent many an hour with a blow dryer and round brush trying to get that look. I would kill for wash and wear hair, sigh.

I had a looong hair for 10 years and had a haircut maybe twice a year if…got a short bob last September.Ever since every haircut seems that my hairstylist goes shorter and shorter…. Anyhow I get a regular haircut every 6 weeks,my hair grows pretty fast.

    Karen,
Your hair looks very pretty! Modern Farrah Fawcett type do. To answer your question my hair cutting frequency varies. When I lived in Denver I got it cut like every other month or so. No I get it cut twice a month cuz I have short hair and it grows so fast. I know that might sound pricey BUT my mom used to have a salon back in the day so she cuts my hair for free. I know it’s aweseome! If I want something special I go and get it done at the local beauty school. I do miss laying back and having someone wash my hair.

    Karen,

I have to be careful with that 3-minute miracle conditioner. I only use it when my hair is fried and dry in the winter. If I use too much or keep it in too long, my all ready oily hair goes into overdrive so even though I washed my hair, it still looks like OPEC could lay claim on it at any moment in time.

I hope you and El Hub had a romantic dinner!

It’s not raining here, for once. I hope Tabs doesn’t destroy anything! Zena doesn’t like the rain either, particularly thunderstorms.

Zena played, walked and escaped through the front door today. She didn’t get very far and I carried her little royal heiney inside. She got a good talkin’ to, let me tell you, as she nearly got ran over by the neighbor’s car across the street! Thank goodness the neighbors know her, stopped and called her to the driver’s side so I could come behind her and scoop her up. Momma got a talkin’ to too as she was the one who left the door open! I think she temporarily forgot Zena is a TERRIER aka bolt-prone, not a Labrador because Zena is so well-behaved. She’s micro-chipped but that doesn’t mean I want her exploring without a leash and a human! Aside from the Exploring the Outdoors Without a Leash Episode, my day’s been fine.

Dinner was great! We got drenched while walking to the restaurant (parking in SF is challenging), but the yummy food made up for it. We had Japanese food: sushi, grilled salmon, shrimp tempura and seaweed salad. YUM! When we returned home everything was still intact — Tabs managed to not go completely nuts!

Wow, your hair looks fantastic Karen! I wish I could get mine to do that, but I don’t think it’s in the cards. I have fine, thin, naturally curly hair (really it’s more wavy, since it lays flat on top, and then does an “s” curl). I only cut it when I get tired of it being so long. For the last few years, I’ve done the same thing each time I go to the salon–shoulder length with long layers. I’m getting bored with it, actually. I’ve found a stylist who’s supposed to be really good with curly hair; he cuts it while it’s dry and everything. I’m thinking I may make an appointment, and tell him I want it short, and see what happens.

The dry cuts can make a big difference. I’ve had it done before when going short and I liked the results. I bet he’ll be able to bring out your curls and some volume!

You’ll have to let me know how it turns out. 🙂 Sometimes a big change can feel so liberating… I’ll have to vicariously live through you if/when you go short.

WOW! Karen, your hair looks GORGEOUS! =D

I usually get my hair cut every 2 and a half months, basically whenever I’m back in Shanghai. English people cannot cut my hair. They always make a compleeeete mess of things, so I don’t let them anywhere near my hair anymore. If I can’t get to China for some reason, I stop off at China town.

      Hi Jian,

Ha! I do kind of the same thing, except I look for stylists with wavy or curly hair. They seem to “get” all the quirks involved with curly hair. I’ve had too many bad triangle cuts in my day, LOL!

When are you do for your next cut?

wow! sexy wahine in da house!

not that you looked bad before, karen. you know the consensus is that you’re very pretty, with a perky & fun personality to boot. that’s why you have so many devotees.

i get my hair trimmed every quarter to six months. right now, like you, i have bangs (kate moss-inspired shag), so i go more frequently. right now my hair is about as long as yours but i want to grow it longer–maybe down to my booty. we’ll see. in the meanwhile, weekly deep conditions and staying away from the hair dryer/flat iron as much as possible are a requirement for me.

      Hi Nai,

      🙂 Thanks!

I notice that staying away from heavy heat styling makes a huge difference. If you good about letting it air dry I bet you can grow that hair down to your boo-tay in no time flat. What deep conditioner have you been using? Do you like it?

I tend to go around every 3 months, but its not booked in. My hair is naturally quite light, but I have it dyed blonde and so i usually make an appointment when the roots (that fortunately hardly anyone else notices!) are driving me nuts.

I think I’ll probably go either later on this month or early next month because its starting to get scruffy!

    Karen,

Oh its short! LOL Hmmmmmm like Halle Berry Bond girl short. I’ve been wearing it like that for about 5 years now. Sometimes I grow it out a little at the top, and sometimes I’ll add extensions to it, styled in a bob or so. My hair long is not the best, it doesn’t keep a curl, and I guess I don’t have the patience to deal with it anymore. I do love it on others though! 🙂

    Oooh, gorgeous!

I chopped my hair Twiggy-short in December of ’06, and it’s been short ever since. I usually go in about every two months to get it cleaned up — basically, if I feel it’s starting to be too “party in the back”, it’s time to go in! Plus I adore the girl who cuts my hair, and her prices are a-ma-zingly low, so I always look forward to seeing her!

Randomly, I keep having dreams that I have long hair again — so weird!

I don’t think Houdini is going to be added onto her list. She’s being a kiss up today.

I try to get my hair cut once every month though, occasionally, I run a few weeks over. Rarely do I run a month or so over but it has been known to happen XP Within the past year my haircuts have consisted of actual dramatic changes. The first was…about 8 months of so ago and I went from my beautiful long hair to a more shoulder length and layered look. Everything was the same…it was just shorter and a bit more layered. The latest cut I have is short (and due for a trim). I can no longer put it into a ponytail AND I got banks (straight bangs!). I loved the bangs! haha I say I look like a China doll now XD. Anywho…I USUALLY just get a trim BUT if I come across a hairstyle I adore I check it out and talk to my hairstylist about whether it will work for me or not.

BTW, am loving the cut! Reminds me of my old locks!

First let me say how fabulous your hair looks! It’s a cross between Stacy London and Farrah!

I am lucky if I cut my hair once a year. Sometimes even longer. My hair grows maybe 3 inches a year and I always dislike the cuts I get. They always cut too much and do things to my hair without taking into consideration I have really thick hair and that not all techniques are rights for all hair types.

A few weeks ago I was feeling a bit scraggly and I REALLY didn’t want to go to a hairdresser and shell out money for a cut I probably wouldn’t like.

So I nicely asked my husband to cut it. hee. He is an Architect and is a perfectionist who is good at anything he does as long as you give him clear instructions. So I told him I wanted the back evened out and a sharp angle in the front. He did AWESOME.
    http://www.byhillary.com/2009/04/adventures-in-home-hair-cutting.html

I doubt I will go back to a hairdresser anytime soon. Not if I get this great a cut for free! Well and the joy of saying “yeah my husband cuts my hair, no he isn’t a hairdresser!”

Karen, my hair got down to about the middle/lower part of my back…cut some of it off to donate and then just got long-ish layers. I can’t go *that* short, ever, because I’m far too lazy to actually style it, but I don’t think the layers are, uh, layer-y enough. 🙂

I get my bangs done every 4 weeks, and the rest is every 8 weeks. My hair is long – more than halfway down my back – but I’m still trying to grow it longer, so I only get the ends trimmed off, removing any dry, damaged, or splitting hair at the ends so that my hair will keep growing longer.

Karen – you look totally, totally fab with this new haircut!! I think loose curls and bangs really flatter you. You seriously look at least 5 years younger (which is not to say that you look old normally, but this is just so fresh and young looking!).

I’ve actually been growing out my hair for the last two years, so I haven’t gotten it cut very often. Now that it’s finally past my shoulders, I think I’m gonna have it cut every 6 months or so… I haven’t yet decided how often I’m gonna get my bangs trimmed. Last time I just kind of let them grow out, but I like my bangs better this time. I had it done at a Japanese salon named Moga last time, and I LOVED how it looked when the stylist curled my hair… I’m just usually too rushed to even dry my hair in the mornings though, LOL… so I totally feel you.

I was home last weekend and my mom freaked out about how long my greys are getting haha. I almost don’t even care anymore lol. I should probably do it one of these days though, cuz I’m sure the greys poking through everywhere make me look older than I am!

I absolutely love your new cut, I love the layers and side swept bangs!! IT looks awesome on your face shape. I actually go every 3 months to get my hair cut, and I have been loving my hair ever since. I have naturally curly/ wavy hair that used to be extremely dry until I started taking care of it more. I love my hair dresser more than most things, and I use mainly Aveda products to keep my hair healthy and natural. I also go every month to get it blown out straight as a little treat to myself. 
