At the time, I probably wouldn’t have described any of my attempts at dyeing my hair at home as “mishaps,” but looking back…every single time I dyed my hair in college could have, in fact, been characterized as a massive mishap. LOL!
Nothing ever looked quite right when I did it myself. Not then, not now. DIY at-home hair dyeing is just not my forte (which is one of the reasons I’m growing out my gray).
I think the worst incident was the time I did my own highlights and wound up with chunky, streaky orange tiger stripes. ? Of course, I didn’t know any better at the time and thought I was the ish… Thank goodness this was before social media was a thing, because I would have been #hashtagging things like #chunkyhighlightsftw and #DIYtigerstripes.
I really hope your answer to this question is “no,” but just in case it isn’t, talk to me. ? Have you ever had an at-home hair dye mishap. If so, what happened?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I, too, ended up with tiger stripes and platinum-blond roots (at the same time!) from an at-home highlighting kit. This was my senior year of college. I skipped a class the next day to get it corrected, and I’ve not touched at-home hair color since and probably never will again.

I had some poor results from Sun In, back in the day! With the exception of a very few people I knew, everyone ended up with orange hair. HAHA! But, since then, no real issues. I touch up my roots about every 2 weeks and don’t try anything fancy so I’m all good. I’ll usually put a demi-permanent glaze on everything every couple of months to keep any brassiness down. I use the same professional color that my salon uses so it’s kind of hard to go wrong (unless you make a mistake with the mixing ratio). It cuts my salon visits to a few times per year, which is much more manageable for my wallet!

Yes in college! (I feel like this is a theme!) I went from light brown hair to bleach blonde and lets just say it didn’t look quite right. I think we (my friends were helping) ran out of dye at some point to completely cover my head so some stuff underneath stayed a darker shade than the rest. Luckily I had 2 family members that were going to cosmetology school and they were happy to help and correct. Consequently I’ve never had a bad experience at the hair school in town and go there from time to time.

Right after I got married in 1996, I cut my long brown hair chin length and box dyed it blonde. I was a new woman, I wanted to look different. It didn’t look quite right, but I didn’t care. There are only a couple of pictures of me with that hair, I love them, but I probably won’t do that again! Lol!

If I did, I can’t remember them. I was always pretty tame with color back in the day. I think I only ever put henna on my hair, which is so dark naturally that the henna wasn’t really that noticeable.
Now, perms on the other hand. I’ve got perm stories. None on my head but I had a girlfriend in high school who was always asking me to give her a permanent, which I did but I had no clue what I was doing. I think those were her mullet poodle years.
Halloween is two weeks away. I have to live vicariously through you since my high school junior is way too cool for costumes. Has Connor Clare narrowed her choices yet????

I dyed my hair solid black in high school. My natural color is medium/dark brown. It was not a good look. My friends thought it was cool, at least that what they said to my face! Never dyed my hair myself again. Never will.

I dyed my hair once in college, but luckily it went pretty smoothly! On the other hand, trying to trim my own bangs definitely resulted in some mishaps. 🙂
I just started getting my hair colored professionally in the past year and I am planning to leave it that way for now. I’m happy to pay an expert to take care of it for me.

Thankfully, I have curly hair and can get away with a quick (and small) trim here and there. I have, however, had in the past a few unfortunately bang trims, ugh.
Thanks love <3

Hi, I was wondering if you had any opinions on those DIY coloring conditioners that are currently blowing up my FB feed? I am so intrigued but am afraid it won’t live up to the hype!

Yes, I too did the highlight thing when I was younger. Put on the cap, pull the hair through the holes, apply, wait and…disaster! I had yellow, orange and white straw. Some of the hair was looped in the holes and the ends were yellow with the middle brown. I was able to find a drugstore open on Sunday and dyed it back. I had one little blonde spot underneath at the back that was missed. No harm done to my hair, I don’t think.

A color or turn out mishap? No. I even got good at buying multiple colors and mixing them in different proportions to get my desired color. Not too cool, not too brassy, just right. But mishap in the “How did the hair dye get on the pale blue bedroom carpet, when the bathroom door was closed?” type, yes. And on wall paper and imbedded in tile grout, yes. I’m just really messy and sloppy when it comes to at home hair dye. I also got fed up with stained towels even though I bought dark brown towels to use just when dying my hair. That’s why I went back to the salon until my scalp started to protest from the hair dye. I miss having colored hair but I don’t miss the irritated, inflamed scalp skin.

I dyed my hair in college (seems like the theme here) from a box. It looked like I shoe polished my head black….Not a good look lol i used medium brown idk why came out so dark! Even if i try to just do my roots at home, it doesn’t work well I have dark brown hair but the top always pulls brassy gold from the box.

I used a color depositing conditioner for a while and didn’t realize it was only changing the bottom half of my hair so about halfway down the length there was a line of color!
Jane says
Sure did. It was so messy. I think there was dye on my ears, bathroom wall and sink. I won’t dye my hair anymore.
So I am officially 60! Had a great celebration. It feels pretty good.

In high school, I tried an at home frost kit. I have naturally curly hair and not only did it take forever pulling it through the cap but it also turned platinum blonde and pulled the curl out from the chemicals. Like LC said above, that was the first and last time I will ever color my hair myself!

While in high school ( 100 years ago ) I dyed my own hair dark brown w Clairol Loving Care . It was easy and came out great . I felt it even gave my hair more body .
While in nursing school I added a blonde streak (c 1968 )
While it looked great it didn’t go over big w my nursing school instructors AKA The Sisters of Mary ( not a real church )
I was in trouble for the streak , mascara and white pearl nail polish !
Ugh ?

I’ve never dyed my hair myself before. But I’ve only started going to a hairstylist to get my hair dyed this year, now that I don’t really like the grey strands I see. That said, I’m always curious about Henna, like the one Lush sells. One day I hope to try it out. They have some videos on how to use those blocks and I’m so curious. In Indian lifestyle, Henna is supposedly very good for your hair and scalp.

Oh, yes! I always thought I would be able to save some money by doing my own highlights/ bleach, and it always ended up a disaster.
