Nars Mediteranee Face of the Day: Orange, Anyone?

July 2nd, 2008 by Karen 85 Comments

nars-mediteranee-eyeshadow-duo

Ladies, thanks for your suggestions the other day on ways to wear the orange and gold shades from the Nars Mediteranee eyeshadow duo.

nars-mediteranee-eyeshadow-duo-swatches

Before heading to work, I did the following look with the Mediteranee shadows and incorporated products from MAC Cosmetics, Shu Uemura, Laura Mercier and Chanel.

nars-mediteranee-eyeshadow-duo-eye5

I began by applying a warm gold (MAC Indianwood Paint Pot) on the entire eye lid, layered beneath all of the other products.

The eyes…

  1. Nars Mediteranee gold shade on the browbone
  2. MAC Saddle eyeshadow (a warm brown) in the crease
  3. Nars Mediteranee orange shade on the lid and slightly into the crease
  4. MAC Jadeye Fluidline on the upper lash line
  5. MAC Uppity Fuildline on the lower lash line

The rest of the look…

  • MAC Concrete Eye Shadow

Lashes

  • Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir

Dark circles

  • MAC Select Moisturecover in NW 25
  • Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2

Face

  • Becca Luminous Skin Colour SPF 20 in Nut
  • Becca Stick Foundation SPF 30 in Coffee
  • Laura Mercier Translucent Powder

Cheeks

  • Shu Uemura Glow On blush in PGold 93D

Lips

So, I totally realize that I look a little strange in the shot above, like I’m gazing off into space, LOL!

What are your thoughts on the orange? How would you wear Nars Mediteranee?

I hope you’re having a good day and that your makeup looks fresh and fearless!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

This looks sooooooooooo good on you!! It’s such a good summer look! I especially like the jade and uppity fluidlines on top and bottom… it provides a really nice contrast. I think black might have been too harsh.

The lighter shade looks matte and beige in the packing 😛 But it looks really good on.

Thanks, Nosh! I was surprised by the lighter shade, too. It’s really a very pretty gold that will probably look great on its own as a wash.

Who knew orange could be so versatile? What makeup are ya rockin’ today?

Wow, Karen, you came up with a gorgeous look! I love the pop of teal eyeliner and the beautiful gold on the lower lashline!

I’m not sure I could do orange at all without looking undead, and not in a good goth-on-purpose way! If I tried it I’d use it either with a pink and gold combo (sunsetty goodness) or with pink and purple (deeper sunsetty goodness… are we detecting a theme here?). Maybe I’ll try it sometime, just for kicks, but I’m doing it on the cheap! 😉

This looks fantastic on you (would not look so good on my PPP skin)!!! I love the contrasting shades, and it’s so fresh for a warm summer day! Did you feel like the eyeshadow really limited your outfit choices, though… It’s certainly not a neutral, go with everything look. 😉

    Hi Glosslizard,

I am still going to try your suggestion of using the purple in the outer corner, either tomorrow or sometime this weekend (sooooo much makeup, so little time). 🙂 I’ve been dying to use the MAC Rich Purple pigment so this is a perfect excuse.

Whatcha got going on today (makeup and otherwise)?

Yah, it does. Enjoy it while you can though… I know everybody probably tells you that, but once you get into the working world then you realize how much you miss it (okay, maybe that’s just me being a nerd).

    Hi Julia,

Not really, because believe it or not, I actually own several orange tops! I guess one could wear this look with a white top, or brown or black, too.

What makeup are you wearing today? Did you go natural, or are you wearing some brights?

I’m not too fond of orange but that looks hot! I need some inspiration for this weekend so I’m bringing in some hard liquor for as you would say “booty short stress”. 🙂 Unfortunately, I tossed my boa years ago…I may have to stop at Michaels and get a inexpensive one. Any suggestions on eye makeup?

The new job is going well. I’m at a biofuels company. With the cost of gas…I hope this gets BIG!! There’s a cosmetics division also so hopefully I can get a chance to work on that too.

    Hi PeeChee,

I would lend you mine but I tossed it a few years ago, too. If you’re going to do it, go all the way and get a really obnoxious hot pink one!

Methinks if one is going to be 1.) dancing on or around a pole and 2.) in booty shorts and boa, then glitter in large amounts is absolutely necessary. Do ya have any of the MAC Reflects around? Or maybe some Dazzleglass?:)

Speaking of weddings, do you remember my BF Jen? She’s getting married in November. I’m going to see her on Saturday to look at bridesmaids dresses.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the new gig. How awesome would it be if you were in the cosmetics division!

omg sooo doopppeee! i love the pop of teal as the liner. mannnn, i try to stick to JUST MAC, but i might have to pick up this duo. the only color i can think of that is similar to the orange is the ‘off the radar’ pigment, and even that one doesn’t look like it has a great payoff like the NARS gold/orange. i heart it!

I love the orange on you! I think to make it stand out more I’d use it with this whiteish silver shade I have and use the orange in the crease. Make it less gold and more orange.

I love me some orange! Those colors look great.

Real Simple had an article about pairing bold colors, and one of the things they said was pair colors that work well in nature. Their example was orange and emerald green. They compared it to a pumpkin. Which doesn’t sound flattering I guess…

My point is, I love the combo:)

    Hi Meesh,

Thanks! You’re right, Nars has amazing payoff. Even by itself (w/out the Indianwood PP underneath) the orange shadow looked really vibrant.

BTW, do you have Indianwood? If you don’t you gotta get it! It’s so beautiful. I’ve had it for a few months and sort of forgot about it; it’s even pretty on it’s own on the lid as a wash.

    What are your MAC faves?

    Hi Bridget,

That sounds like it would be a pretty pairing. It would be a bit bold for me, but I think it would look nice, especially if you packed on the mascara or wore big, false lashes.

For the 4th I’m probably going to the county fair! There’s one every year just north of me and I love to go because I like the food (roasted corn, yummy) and the animals. I like seeing the rabbits, geese, cows, horses, etc. I used to love going to the petting zoo but a few years ago I had a bad incident with a goat trying to eat my shirt, so that was the end of that!

When’s your family coming in? Are ya prepared?

    Hi Melissa,

Now that I think about it, the lilies on my desk are orange, yellow, green and brown — practically the same as the eye combo! The whole finding color combinations in nature is a really fabulous idea, especially if you look closely at flowers. I want to do an iris-inspired eye next, with purple, yellow, green and white.

Hope you had a great day. 🙂

    Hey!

You look SO gorgeous! I’ve NEVER seen anyone pulling off orange this well! I wish my skin was as tanned and my teeth were as white! ;P We haven’t got much sun this summer so I’m as pale as copy paper, lol.

I can only speak 3 languages – Finnish, English, and Swedish. My English is way better than my Swedish but at least I know the basics and I understand more than I’m able to speak. I’ve taken a crash course in Italian but I can barely remember anything of it, hah. I wish I could speak French as it’s such a beautiful language, but it’s sooo difficult pronouncing all the rrrrrrrr’s LOL. 😀 How about you, how many languages do you know?

I’ve tried the BV quad only a few times but so far I’ve liked it alright. I thought the ivory shade would’ve had more color pay-off but other than that it hasn’t disappointed me. Today I used the lighter brown in the crease with Femme-Fi on all over lid and it looked great. 🙂 Have you had a chance to try yours yet?

    Have a fabulous weekend, mate!

I’ve been reserving the orange for my lips in gloss form and i just recently purchased the peachy Paradisco eyeshadow. Now it looks like i need to clear more space in my makeup case for this Nars duo. I normally wear Nars blush/glosses now I’ll check this duo out next time I’m at Sephora and rack up even more beauty points on my beauty member points! Believe it or not, I am in the Orgasm is not orgasmic camp as well. It really doesn’t register on my skin tone (especially when I’m extra brown like in the summer). Have you tried Torrid? It’s like Orgasm’s brighter, more coral cousin.

    Hi Tiffany,

Thank you, girlie. 🙂 It was a surprisingly wearable orange. I’ve heard the same thing about blue eyes and orange shadow, too (apparently the contrast makes your eyes look more blue?), so if you’ve been wanting to give it a go this may be the duo to take the plunge with.

Another idea is to try Sun Stream, the orange shade from the Shu Uemura spring 2008 rebirth collection. Have you seen it? It’s a bit more pastel than the Nars version, and might be easier to wear.

    Hi Aleks,

Awww, thanks hon! Maybe we can find you a muted version of orange that you can pull off? You never know until you try (and it always washes off, hay!).

That’s really fantastic that you can communicate in so many different languages. My language skills are sadly very limited. I understand basic Tagalog (the national language of the Philippines). I can’t really speak it, though. I know enough broken sentences to order food and insult people and that’s about it. I can speak/understand very, very basic French. I love the language and the country, but when I think of being in France I remember with amazing clarity how STRESSED OUT I was all the time when I had to speak the language (especially at train stations and restaurants, LOL).

So, I’ve taken pics of the BV quad but have yet to try it! Boo to me, I know. Hopefully this week I’ll be able to play. Hmm, maybe you can layer your Ivory shade underneath a MAC Paint Pot or a Pearl CCB to bring out the color?

    Have a great week, girlfriend!

The last time I played around with Nars their makeup artist tried the Multiple Orgasm/South Beach Duo on me and I loved it. It is a little pricey, but as of right now I don’t see anything I desperately want from the MAC Holiday collections, so I might have to pick that one up for myself for Christmas! Some of my favourite Nars products are Schiap and Funny Face lipsticks and Hot Wire lip lacquer.
