Estée Lauder Double Wear Deep Dive: Set + Refresh Perfecting Makeup Mist

August 1st, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

Estée Lauder Set + Refresh

What is Deep Dive? I’m glad you asked! It’s a new series in which I’m reviewing a bunch of Estée Lauder Double Wear products from their permanent collection. Let’s find out what’s good! ?

I’ve been skipping powder as of late (’cause I’m waaaaay too deep into this whole skin-that-looks-like-skin thing), so setting spray has been vitally important to me. I literally — literally, and I don’t mean figuratively instead — haven’t left home without it in weeks.

My all-time ride-or-dies are Urban Decay All Nighter (obviously) and the lesser known Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix, but, as you know, I have to try everything, and this one from Estée Lauder is a nice surprise.

Set + Refresh Perfecting Makeup Mist ($36 for a 3.9-oz. bottle with a pump)

Estée Lauder’s Set + Refresh Perfecting Makeup Mist doesn’t actually have any Double Wear branding on it, but if you hop on their site and check out the Double Wear section, it’s there among the foundations, concealers and whatnot.

I’ve asked around, and a few MUA friends have said that this particular spray is BOSS when you use it on top of the O.G. Double Wear Foundation.

I’ve yet to try that combo, but it’s at the top of my to-do list, along with 1) mourning the loss of single Nick Jonas to Priyanka Chopra (honest to god, I thought he was gonna ask ME to marry him), and 2) eating a bag of baby carrots in one sitting (because why the heck not?).

The fine, lightweight mist, which performs like it’s equal parts primer and dewy setting spray, is made for all skin types. You can use it before AND after applying your base products.

Whenever I douse myself in it, I revel in the fresh, subtle scent, which smells like spring sunshine to me — or, less metaphorically, like pears with a squeeze of lemon, brown sugar and a handful of freesia petals.

Ingredients
Water\Aqua\Eau, Butylene Glycol, Polysorbate 80, Caffeine, Fragrance (Parfum), Calcium Chloride, Sodium Sulfate, Magnesium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Nitrate, Potassium Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol

It lasts just as long as my go-to sprays, too, but with the added bonus of subtly weaving together my blush, bronzer and foundation so seamlessly and effortlessly that I can’t tell where one product starts and the next one ends. I’ve used it atop Double Wear Light, Double Wear Nude Water Fresh and Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup, and it does this with all of ’em.

(Note: If you’re into the skin-like-skin thing, you know this is totes key.)

Probably the best part, though, is that it’s also moisturizing, so when I spray it around my hella dry under-eyes (the struggle is so real!), not only does it lock down whatever brightener I’m wearing that day, but it brings some extra hydration.

Gotta love a double-duty product!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oh, Karen – I promised Nick I wouldn’t tell you, but now I feel I must. He confided to me that knew he couldn’t compete with El Hub. And he was very intimidated by Tabs’ stage presence. So while you’ll always be his #1, he felt his only option was to try to achieve some measure of happiness with his distant second choice. 🙂

What’s your feeling on MAC Fix +. I’m sure you’ve said and I just don’t remember. I picked up a coconut scented bottle the other day. I don’t know yet if I noticed a difference. I’ll need a few more tries.

HA HA HA, Kim! You are so lucky to be Nick’s #1 confidante. 🙂

So, I love Fix+. I do feel like it’s more for straight up moisture though and for taking down excess powder after application. The coconut scented one is lovely! You can use it after your skin care and before your Tarte Tinted Moisturizer. Or if your skin is feeling dry on a given day, you can also spray it on top of your makeup throughout the day. It’ll add moisture without disrupting your base. Oh, and did you know you can also use it on your hair? If you want to bring out your curls, spray it on dry or damp hair and scrunch!

I have never used a setting spray nor do I use powder. It is funny how Estee Lauder is becoming popular again. I wore EL products in the early 80’s but then so many new lines started to appear in the market and EL seemed so “old school”. I keep hearing good things about the Double Wear lline, but it sounds like it is mostly for people with oilier to combo skin. My skin is too dry for matte finishes.

    Be well and be safe!

      Hi Jane,

I feel like my skin is often too dry for matte finishes, too, but the Double Wear Light (the version in a tube) is SO GOOD. Even on the dry spots! I was really surprised by how much I liked it. It’s just matte enough but not too matte.

      Hi Michele,

I have that Hourglass powder, too. It’s great! This should work well on top of it. 🙂

I’ve been using the Cover FX High Performance Setting Sprayand it is amazing! Fragrance free, alcohol free, long lasting, not too drying! I might try the dewy one next time.

Ooh, I haven’t tried that one! I’ll see if I can find it next time I go to Sephora. Thanks, Chelsea!

I knew you would have all the tricks! Thank you! I’ve only used it, post make up, as a setting spray. I will try it in my hair though – it does smell so nice. I’m looking for “the best” setting spray for a project I’m working on. I have a bunch of moisturizing toners/sprays but this was supposed to be the first for setting. I’m glad you let me know it’s more of a moisturizing product, too. The search continues!

PS Nick will never trust me again, but I felt you had the right to know. 😉
PPS I got some samples of UD Naked Skin Weightless and am amazed by the all-day matte finish. Sadly, no spf.

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
