With Pop Beauty Cat Eyes Liners It’s Good to Be Catty

December 9th, 2008 by Karen 38 Comments

OBSESSION ALERT! Pop Beauty Cat Eyes Liners ($16) make applying eyeliner easy and, well, kinda fun.

Slanted like the tips of calligraphy pens, these three three highly pigmented pencil liners are built to hit the right angles for slick cat eyes (think Amy Winehouse pre-hot mess).

  • Black Dahlia: matte deep plum
  • Black Olive: matte kahki
  • Black Onyx: matte blue-black

I heart them all. The colors are vibrant, the liner creamy, and the formula doesn’t tug at my lids. I found them easy to use and appreciated the design once I got the hang of ’em (and once my Sephora homegirl Jenny helped me out).

From left to right: Black Onyx, Black Dahlia, Black Olive

How to Apply Pop Beauty Cat Eyes Liner

Knowing where to place the pointy end of the liner is key…

I start by placing the liner parallel to my lash line with the pointy side of the liner positioned closest to my nose.

Then, with the flat side flush against my skin, I use short strokes to draw a line across my upper lash line, thickening the line as it moves toward my ear.

I prefer a very subtle flick at the end of the line. To get it, I continue to draw the line just slightly upward when I get to the end of the lash line. If you want a bigger flick and a more dramatic cat eye look, keep extending the line upward a little more.

All done. 🙂

A Few More Things to Consider

Because Pop Beauty Cat Eye liners are so creamy, they tend to migrate on my semi-oily lids after a few hours. To help it stay put throughout the day, I set the liner by patting a coordinating powder eyeshadow on top with an angled brush like the MAC 266 or Sonia Kashuk Angled Eye Shadow Brush.

After using one of these liners a few times, the pointed tip dulls, and the flat edge starts to round, so to restore the original shape I twist up the tip until it just barely peeks out beyond the gray casing. Then, I take a makeup wipe, swiping it across the end to shave off, or sharpen the excess liner. That way, the next time it’s used, the pencil’s tip is sharp again with a flat edge, just like new.

I like these a lot. I hope Pop Beauty releases them in more colors (hint-hint)…

Dear Whitney, Hook Me Up

Did you catch The Hills last night? I thought my girl Whitney did most excellent during her job interview in New York. How cool would it be to work with Diane von Furstenberg? DVF is famous for her wrap dresses and prints… I wonder if Whitney will get an employee discount, LOL!

I checked out the Diane von Furstenberg site this morning and found some stuff I’d like. Anyone have Whitney’s email address? 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oh those marketing geniuses over at Pop Beauty…I’ll take all three!

I wonder if the end of the liner would eventually become straight due to continued use? I think the main appeal is the angled-point, although I must say that the colors are deeply delicious, too.

I’ve never tried patting eyeshadow on top of my liner, mostly because I hate the idea of having to put ANOTHER product on my poor eyes. They’re very sensitive.

Love Tabs and his rad glasses! Pop beauty has some really cute stuff that I’m going to get after the holiday season. Once upon a time a saw a DVF carry all at Ross for $25. It was like a 90% off from the original price. Since I have lots of bags already, I decided to leave it but that was a very beautiful carry all bag.

I’m not a big fan of Paris Hilton (actually I kind of hate her) but today she was in Madrid (where I happen to live) and saw her by chance. She was wearing the first DVF dress!! (the colour patterned one). Funny coincidence, huh?

    Hey Karen,

I am loving the Black Dahlia shade! On a side note, I just learned how to do the cat eye thing. I tried to do it in the past but it always ended up a hot mess. 🙂 I tried it again using blacktrack fluidline and the 209 brush. Success!! I can now channel my inner Amy Winehouse 😀

So that’s how you do a cat eye! Thanks, Karen!! I’m kind of scared of trying it because I think I’ll look ridiculous–but you have inspired me, and I think I’ll attempt it this weekend. I caved (again–darnit) and got the Stila Stars Set from Sephora, and I’m actually really happy with the grey smudge pot. My skin is pretty oily and absolutely nothing stays on my waterline, but the smudge pot is the best I’ve tried at sticking around, AND I can smoke it a bit before it sets! (Good deal for the set overall, I think–right , in case you’re interested.) I think it’ll do a good cat eye…assuming my eyelining skillz are up to the challenge… *dundadunnnn*

If I never comment here again, just know that I died for a good cause. *sad violin music*

    Hi P. Potter,

It does get rounded after a few uses, but you can just “shave” off the ends with a makeup wipe to reshape it.

I pat shadow on top of all kinds of liner — even gel liners, too!

    Hi Jennifer,

These are the only three shades I’ve seen. The Black Onyx might appear more “black” on your skin tone — mine tends to really bring out the blue!

    Hi Daya,

You’re going to laugh, but I’m the only person on earth it seems who hasn’t tried the UD 24/7 liners! I’ve had friends recommend them and I just need to get around to trying them!

I have heard that they are very pigmented and they don’t budge at all! I hope that’s true. 🙂

    Hi Marisol,

On me they don’t last very long on the waterline. I usually end up tightlining the waterline with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack when I wear these…

The colors look like Too Faced’s foiled liners. They go on really smoothly and they don’t run on my lids, and i have oily lids too.
