When NARS Springs for 2011, He Won’t Be Blushing

January 5th, 2011 by Karen 69 Comments

NARS spring 2011

Since I have a weak spot for NARS blushes that’s right up there with my weak spot for Häagen-Dazs dulce de leche ice cream, I was shocked, and a wee bit disappointed, to hear that Francois left the blushes out of his collection for fall.

But I wiped away my tears today when I saw these pics for the small 11-piece collection for eyes, lips and nails. The shimmery earth tones with metallic finishes; the sheer, sparkly cool purples and pinks; and even a couple of unexpected greens and blues? NARS started with safe neutrals but sprinkled them with just enough brights to keep a girl on her toes, and what he came up with looks to be a lot of fun.

Plus, almost all of the colors are new (two of the lip glosses are repromotes).

NARS SPRING 2011

Trio Eyeshadow in Calanque (new), $45 — This earthy trio can do the splits, meaning it’s flexible, yo. It contains a shimmery gold-infused platinum with silver glitter, a light matte caramel and a shimmery antique-ish golden bronze. Wear the products individually, using one as a base, one as a highlighter and one as a liner, or mix and match them with the other eye products from the release (or something else entirely). Neat, right? I can already see this trio getting a permanent place in my makeup bag.

Eyeshadow Duo in Bateau Ivre (new), $32 — I feel blue 🙁 but in a totally good way. I’m eager to try Bateau Ivre’s rich sky blue and deep denim. FUN FACT: This duo took its moniker from the Arthur Rimbaud poem of the same name.

An excerpt from Le Bateau Ivre (The Drunken Boat)

“As I was floating down unconcerned Rivers
I no longer felt myself steered by the haulers:
Gaudy Redskins had taken them for targets
Nailing them naked to coloured stakes.

I cared nothing for all my crews,
Carrying Flemish wheat or English cottons.
When, along with my haulers those uproars were done with
The Rivers let me sail downstream where I pleased.”

— Arthur Rimbaud, Le Bateau Ivre

Eyeshadow Duo in Nouveau Monde (new), $32 — One word: WANT! Nouveau Monde, French for “New World”, NARS poetically pairs a silvery metallic lilac with a rich olive gold.

Soft Touch Shadows Pencils in Celebrate (new) and Hollywoodland (new), $24 each — Both Celebrate (a festive parrot green) and Hollywoodland (a pale gold) can be worn as bases upon which to layer powder shadows, or alone for a dash of pigmented shimmer.

NARS SPRING 2011

Lip Glosses in Nana (new), Super Orgasm (repromote) and Angelika (repromote), $24 each — There they (NARS) go again. They can’t sincerely expect me to be able to resist shiny pink and purple glosses, right? I mean come on.

I’m putting Nana (French for a “girl/chick”), a sheer black grape, near the top of my list, next to the repromoted Super Orgasm, a peachy pink with golden glitter, and Angelika, a bright cotton candy pink with gold and silver sparkle (as repromotes, both are already available at Sephora and NARS counters now).

Lipstick in Tzigane (new), $24 — This sheer, pinkish brandy looks like a perfect companion for bold eye looks.

Pure Matte Lipstick in Madère (new), $25 — NARS named this matte nude pink after an archipelago of volcanoes off the coast of Portugal. It looks like something I’d love, but the name keeps making me think of the Chicken Madeira at Cheesecake Factory (try it if you like gravy).

NARS SPRING 2011

Nail Polish in Desperado, $16 — NARS showed true grit when he developed this shimmery brass. 🙂 I think it’s a nice break from all of the greens and greenish grays we’ve been seeing from the other premium makeup lines this spring (See: Dior, Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana).

With the collection, NARS aimed for a minimalist fashion-forward makeup look. Take a look at these early promo pictures, and let me know if you think he hit the mark.

The NARS spring 2011 collection comes to NARS counters and narscosmetics.com soon.

Looking at the pics, did anything catch your eye? I’m juiced about the Calanque trio, the Nouveau Monde duo, both of the Soft Touch Shadow Pencils and all three of the glosses…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I have a HUGE soft spot for neutral shadows – this trio has LEX written all over it. I love the Nana gloss just because that’s what my daughter calls her grandmother and I’m super curious about that color. This is when I really, really appreciate the skin tone I am. I usually get away with these type of dark colors. I also want the blue duo and the Hollywoodland soft touch pencil.

What’s up with leaving blushes out of the collection? That’s so not NARS style!

I love the trio but have to admit that I dislike it when companies mold the colors together instead of each getting their own individual pot. There is always one color that you use more than the others and hitting pan on that one causes the others to start to break. Plus, it’s hard to use the whole area of any one color without blending into it’s neighbor on your brush. So I will skip it, but I won’t be happy about it 🙁

I would buy that in a second! We live on a lake and when I was in my early 20s they used to run booze cruises every Tuesday night that were mostly attended by the college crowd/local waitstaff. I loved those! Except for the bathroom lines. There was literally one women’s bathroom for about 100 gals. Drinking heavily. On a 2-hour cruise.
