What Do You Think of Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencils?

June 18th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

nyx jumbo eye pencils review
The new Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil summer shades! From left: Purple Velvet, Pure Gold, Rocky Mountain Green, Electric Blue

The weekend is just around the corner, huzzah! I’m so looking forward to just vegging out on the couch, re-watching season two of True Blood and playing with makeup. Do you have any plans yet? Whatever you end up doing, I hope it also involves a fun look or two. 😉

Speaking o’ beauty bits, what do ya think of the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils ($4)? Have you seen them before?

These four particular colors are new for summer, but the pencils themselves have been around for a while. Drugstore makeup line Nyx designed them to double as eyeliners or eyeshadows. The chubby pencils have quite a cult following these days, thanks to their smooth formula and technicolor pigmentation; with the addition of these four new shades — Pure Gold, Electric Blue, Purple Velvet and Rocky Mountain Green — they come in 28 total colors.

They’re available now in drugstores and online at nyxcosmetics.com.

While I love the pigmentation and silky texture of these pencils, they don’t hang out for long on my lids. I only get about two hours of color from them, max, before they disappear…and that’s *with* primer.

Paired with a powder eyeshadow, I have a little better luck with ’em. The powder seems to set the pencils, extending wear time to about five hours.

Because these are so good at intensifying the color of whatever shades I pop on top, I see myself reaching for them whenever I’m in the mood for something vibrant and playful.

Have you tried the Nyx Jumbo Pencils yet? What did you think?

The shoe kick continues…

Can I get a quick amen from my fellow shoe addicts? I’ve been on a shoe kick lately, and I think it’s mostly because my shoes *always* seem to fit, no matter how much Nutella I’ve consumed over the past few months.

Meet my latest high heel crush, a pair of Marc Fischer metallic leather slingbacks… I picked these up at Macy’s.

I’ve never owned a pair of MF shoes before, but I like what I’ve seen so far. These are quite comfy for 4-1/2 inchers (the leather’s uber-soft… I didn’t even have to break the pair in with thick socks!), and the heel feels stable. I probably wouldn’t wear them to a theme park or a dance-a-thon, but I bet they’d make great dinner date shoes.

Anywho, enough waxing poetic about footwear obsessions! I hope you’re enjoying your Friday and feeling relaxed and happy. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Great colors but I wish they lasted longer.

I have the NYX pencils, but not these colors. I have found they last longer if, after i apply them to my lids, i spread the color out with a small, flat eyeshadow brush.

Hey Karen! How does the NYX jumbo pencils fall when you use them as eye liner? And, do you have the same effect if you sprayed your face down with a setting spray such as Model in a Bottle or MAC’s setting spray?

    PS Love your website btw

    Thank you!

nyx pencils in milk are very commonly used to line one’s lower waterline, making the whites of the eyes appear brighter and making the person seem more awake

I find that a thin layer of Milk underneath bright shadows (but over primer) really makes your shadows stand out!

Here’s a short review if you’re interested — hope it helps you use up your Milk 🙂

It’s way too thick and creamy for me to use on the waterline. Sometimes I use it as an eyeshadow base for really bright looks, but mostly I use milk as a way to brighten the area around my tear duct after my eyes are all done. I just pop a little in there and smooth it out with my finger.

I have those pencils and they crease SO badly!! I wanted to love them but due to the buttery formula they just are so hard to keep in one place.

I love the Nyx pencils as bases. You have to use them very carefully. Basically I’ll apply a thin layer on top of my primer and use a brush or my finger tip to even it out.

I just recently got into the Nyx jumbo pencils and I they’re good, better as a liner on me as there;s less friction to rub it off. I agree with using it under shadows does improve the staying power, but the colors are wonderful. They’re no different in quality than the jumbo eye pencils at Sephora and Nyx is cheaper.
I also have to confess to being a shoe addict, it hasn’t been bad lately because I think my closet is ready to stage an intervention. Last count I was at almost 70 pairs! BAD ME(slaps my hand)!

I love NYX pencils! I wish a retailer by me sold them instead of having to buy them online — but they are so cheap — I can spring for the shipping 🙂 Love the shoes — HOT!!

First things first — those shoes are smexayyy!!! 😀

I remember trying on a pair of MF stilletos @ Macy’s. Thing is it was on clearance and they couldnt find the pair of it. Ugh. Frustrating.

I have all of the first 24 NYX jumbo eye pencils. Pure love – can be worn on its own, combined or layered with an eyeshadow. I can usually find NYX at a grocery store around Houston called HEB. I checked one fine morning after you featured the new shades in daily beauty and they didnt have them yet. Theyre available online but I really dont want to pay for shipping….

One way or the other, im buying those 4 new shades!

I am all for colored eyeliners. These are so cute and chubby, and love the colors. Not really fussy about the staying power, so long as they don’t make me end up with panda eyes…;)

So far I have only 2 shades of these but I’m planning on getting 3 more 😀 I’ve used Milk the most because it’s perfect as a base for every eyeshadow color and my e/s really stands out if I use Milk underneath e/s.

I think these are really a great deal! 🙂

I wish I could get my hands on Nyx pencils, I’ve heard a lot of good about the one in Milk being great for retro pin-up looks as a brow highlight and a base.

Hawt shoes, Karen! I LOVE the NYX pencils; yes, they do crease like crazy if you use as a shadow, but I am of a “certain age” (52) & look harsh with a lot of eye makeup, so I use them as a liner with just mascara. French Fries is a great bronzey shade that looks great on my brown eyes, but the unsung hero is the Iced Mocha pencil. This is a light, taupe-ish color that is the BOMB when lined thickly on the top lid and does absolutely gorgeous things for your eye when you use it under your lower lashline. Due to the pencil’s chubbiness, you may wish to use a brush to get it on the lower lashline. The silvery grey color is so pretty on brown eyes!

I LOVE NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. I have 4 now but I’m planning to get to get all of the colors eventually. I apply it over a primer, blend it thin with a synthetic eyeshadow brush and then set with powder eyeshadow. I get a good 8 hours out of it without creasing this way.
