Try Laura Mercier’s New Long-Wearing, Waterproof Creme Eye Liners for Cat Eyes That Last

January 28th, 2013 by Karen 34 Comments

The New Laura Mercier Creme Eye Liners
Wearing Laura Mercier’s new $22 Creme Eye Liner in Violet, applied with the new Angled Eye Liner Brush ($20)

Remember when you tossed those jeans with the word, “Poison,” airbrushed on them and shouted, “I wish I had a pair of skinnies that said, ‘I love Laura Mercier Stormy Grey!!’ on the butt”?

No…?

Oops! Sorry, my bad. That was me.

If you love Laura’s liners so much that you quote The Notebook whenever you clutch Antique Jade or Black Gold in your hands (“…everyday we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always be yours.”), then 1) no judgment, and 2) you may want to check out Laura’s new $22 Creme Eye Liners.

This spring Laura unveils them in six long-wearing, waterproof cream liner shades designed to accent eyes with smooth, precise color and a semi-matte finish.

They’re designed for quick, easy application, especially when applied with a single swipe from Laura’s new $20 Angled Eye Liner Brush.

Yesterday, while snarfing a post-treadmill workout banana and texting my friend Jen about going out dancing for the first time in years, I swiped Noir along my right lash line and Violet along my left. I used the new brush, too (like a fancy version of Sonia’s Bent Brush; ideal for delivering smooth, crisp edges and flawless flicks).

I was in a frantic rush to get ready and out the door to meet my little brother, who was on his way across the Bay from the city on the Larkspur Ferry, and even though I was rushed and distracted, I still managed a cat eye liner look that Tabs himself could not find fault with. 🙂

As for how waterproof they are, I’m not sure… I’m waiting for Ryan Gosling to declare his unrequited love for me while standing in the rain (in other words, I’ll let you know).

I can already attest to their durability, though. Both Noir and Violet lasted me through a leisurely lunch Off the Grid with my bro, where we spotted a man I’m 99.9% sure was Sammy Hagar…

…through a long hike in the hills of Novato’s Indian Valley nature preserve…

…through a two-hour movie…

…a load of laundry and a trip to Trader Joe’s.

After nine hours, Noir still looked mostly fresh, while Violet had only just begun to fade.

I’ve also worn the inky denim blue Indigo shade, and of the three shades I’ve tried, Noir is the only one for which a single swipe really seems sufficient.

I do feel like Laura poured a ton of pigment into these, but for solid, opaque lines with some of the colors in the collection, you still might need one or two more layers.

All three of the shades I’ve tried smudge a smidgen along my lower lash lines and take 3-4 minutes to set… Just something to keep in mind. And I’ve noticed that when I apply the them and blink before they’ve had time to set, some of the product transfers into my crease.

Might want to keep your eyes closed for a few minutes when applying… You could use the time to daydream about a world with calorie-free criss-cut fries (that’s what I’m doing, LOL!).

Food truck fries from Koja Kitchen

I like these — I really do — but I think I’d love ’em if they dried quicker and didn’t smudge one bit along my lower lash lines.

The liners are super gorgeous and all (LOVE Indigo!!), but your lips and cheeks in that first pic really stole the show for me. Those shades are GORGEOUS on you–so pretty and bright but without being too “loud”! What are you wearing, Karen??

THAT INDIGO IS NOT REALLY INDIGO! *takes deep breath*. Sorry folks that was an illustrator moment. Indigo is a color that is equal parts blue and purple. That “indigo” is fully BLUE with absolutely no purple to it. In fact I would rate it precisely the same shade as the prismacolor pencils medium cerulean-hued blue equivalent ( I just checked, it’s called “True Blue”). It really bums me out when such a great company pulls something like this since I typically love Laura and her eyeliners and cream metallic eyeshadows (I’ve put my two cents in before if you remember Karen {It was a while ago so probably not LOL} XD). However I love that true purple and will confess to being tempted to use it for my medium experiments because purples don’t vary much in pigments. 🙂

Thanks everybody for being so nice abut me ranting. 🙂 And in the interest of full disclosure. I actually got out my whole prismacolor kit (which at this point basically counts as every prismacolor pencil color ever made) and compared this “indigo” with swatches of several blues and held them up until I got a match. Yes I am that much of a nerd. XD They are still gorgeous though.

Everytime I hear “cerulean” I think of “The Devil Wears Prada” and how Andy gets her butt chewed out over her frumpy outfit. Thank you for using that word, it’s a good one.

Nah, we watched The Impossible with Naomi Watts. It was okay. Got a little Lifetime movie at certain parts.

I also watched Mama with El Hub on Saturday and it was pretty lame!

Total bummer about The Impossible – it’s been getting so much hype. I like Ewan McGregor. 🙂 I hope Zero Dark Thirty will not disappoint.

My friend was disappointed in Mama, too. Specifically the ending and when they started to show Mama clearly (as opposed to the creepy “flashes” of her).

I can’t remember if you guys ended up seeing Django. No offense to QT, but I would have liked it a lot more if it was an hour shorter. And there was definitely an hour that could have been cut!

I love how matte they are. If anyone’s looking for a top notch cream liner at a bargain price, Essence’s are hard to beat and they cost less than a chai latte.

Yes! to the Sammy haggar sighting! Hubby and I spotted him years ago on our honeymoon in Marin County. He likes to take in the swank restaurants as well as the foodie truck scene apparently. 🙂 Love your look in this! Violet and “Indigo” both intrigue me- and Leigh, I am going to stop saying Blurple now and replace it with Indigo. It will impress my artist friends, hopefully. 🙂
Karen- which brush do you prefer- the Laura or the Sonia Kashuk? I probably need to invest in one if I am going to try these liners. BTW- I am nuts about your coral mani- what color is it, please?
