Thierry Mugler Makeup, Comic Sans and Fashion Don’ts for Dudes

March 30th, 2011 by Karen 72 Comments

Hey, friend. How’s Wednesday treating you? Sorry if it seems like I haven’t been around as much as usual, especially in the comments, but I’ve been a little out of sorts. It started with a bad case of writer’s block yesterday, which I think I’m still recovering from. I feel much better today, but it still wore me out.

I feel selfish complaining with everything going on in the world, but who else can I tell if not you? Unless it involves gravy, Tabs isn’t concerned.

Even though I haven’t been able to express myself, I’ve been dying to tell you about some of the weird things that have crossed my path lately, like…

Comic Sans! You know how much I like typography, right, and can’t stand Comic Sans? Well, for some reason, I’ve been getting almost one e-mail per day written ENTIRELY in Comic Sans. Like, paragraph after paragraph of bold 18-pt Comic Sans, usually in violet, orange or pink. 🙂 I kid you not! The universe is having a free-for-all font field day at little old moi’s expense. It makes me want to laugh and barf at the very same time.

And then there’s this: apparently, I haven’t been paying enough attention to men’s fashion because somewhere along the way, the sh*t hit the fan. Not only are boys wearing Uggs now, but they’re wearing them with bedazzled booty shorts!

Technically, I believe they’re called “Brazillian cut” swim trunks with Swarovski crystals on the bum. Technically, that is (ha!). That’s according to Rockstar, the indie swimwear company that sells ’em for $89 a pop.

I could see the Jersey Shore guys making a go at these, but if El Hub had shown up to our first surfing date wearing spandex daisy dukes with bling on his bottom, my life would have taken a dramatically different turn. 🙂

Which blings us to makeup. Have you tried Thierry Mugler’s? They’re mostly known for their perfumes (remember Angel?), but they also have a full line of makeup. I haven’t tried any of their products yet, but I like the upscale mirrored packaging; I hope the products inside are just as great (review coming soon).

If you’ve worn the brand before and feel like sharing, please do. I’d love to hear.

Have a great night, and I’ll talk to you soon. Before I bounce, have you heard this Natasha Bedingfield song? It always puts me in a better mood. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Okay, as a graphic designer, I share the same loathing for comic sans. It is so unworthy a font I don’t even want to dignify it by capitalizing. And yes, every time someone uses it, a pegasus no doubt loses its wings.

If I saw a guy in those hot panties I’d have excuse myself from the scene so I didn’t laugh out loud. For serious, indeed. That is just too much. And for $89!!!? You could get the same thing at American Apparel and bedazzle or whatever the bum for probably $20, if you were really so crazy about the look. Lawd.

American Appeal would probably charge just as much without the bedazzling. Cotton tee’s for $22? Brazilian Cut shorts for $90 makes sense!

I’m also a graphic designer who loathes comic sans — why the hell do people request that font?! One of the reps I work with writes “comic sands” on her paperwork. That’s always good for a laugh!

I could not tell you why on this green earth people request that font. I swear, if a client mentioned anywhere in their vision that they wanted comic sans, I’d have to drop the project altogether.

Not even kidding, while I was at the doc office today, I saw an ad for some garden company. Not only did they use PAPYRUS font (another loathsome font), but right underneath was…wait for it! Comic sans.

twice in one go?! It’s hard to believe you could use even one of those fonts without guilt, let alone two!! I hate them all with such a passion. What I don’t understand is anyone who would willingly use that font in an advertisement without being tortured or in some way forced. Do they think it’s so ugly that it’ll HAVE to attract attention? please explain!!

And, I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never heard of Thierry Mugler – but the packaging looks really cute!

Definitely not a fan of Comic Sans– something about it reminds me of middle school girls on AIM.

As far as Thierry’s makeup goes, I knew it existed (one of their reps told me a few years ago when they had a gift set with Angel and a blue lipstick), but I had not seen it in the US apart from that one time. Perhaps they are planning a larger roll out sometime in the near future.

Aw Karen, I’m sorry you’ve been having a poopy week. We need the yucky times to put in perspective how awesome the good times are. I love your writing style; it is so fresh and unique. I would read an instruction manual on how to bedazzle men’s booty shorts if YOU wrote it. You should write a novel or ghost write Tabs’ memoir or something. I would be first in line to pick it up!

I hear you re Comic Sans. One of my pet peeves is hyper punctuation (one of my coworkers always sends emails with at least one ! at the end of every sentence.) and big, colourful, painful to read fonts when people are way too old (ie past 11) to do that. Sigh.

Hope you’re feeling better Karen 🙂 might be time to treat yourself! Spa and peanut butter cookies day perhaps? 😛 Give Tabs a squeeze for me, I hope he’s doing a good job looking after you when things get stressful!

Well, hello! I’m sorry to hear about your writer’s block. 🙁 I’ve only known Thierry Mugler for Angel, but I’m not super keen on the lipstick shape. On the positive side, I was reminded by googling that a 7-sided shape is a heptagon. 🙂

Men’s fashion is certainly taking a turn for the worse! I can see the late Freddy Mercury making a go of the bling Dazies and the Uggs (at the same time), but I don’t think this is going to be a good look for the average guy! HAHA!

PS I despise Comic Sans as well. And lastly, Tabs’ expression above reminds me of vampire Eric looking at Arlene’s kids like they were chocolate cake. 😉

Karen, you are the best! I have always dreamed of being a writer, and you know what – I think I’m going to do it. When I tell people that I always have to preface with: “I know it’s crazy, and I know I’m going to starve, but I’m going to do it anyway! I also adore beauty products/make-up. When I’m stressed, I go to the store and buy myself some make-up (sooo unhealthy, but so wonderful as well).\
Anyway! Enough about me, I just wanted to let you know that you really inspire me. I love that you’ve put your love of make-up and your love of writing together. I’m sorry that you’ve been struggling with writers block. I feel like I’ve had a semester-long case of it. Is is one of the worst feelings ever! I hope you feel better.

That pegasus bit made my day, I tell you! Might I recommend a documentary entitled, “Helvetica”? I don’t know if you’re into documentaries, but if you’re interested in typography, graphic design, or just making the world around you look pleasing (amazing how many people aren’t, actually), you’d probably find it quite interesting. Let me forewarn you though, it is lacking in Rockstar gothic-type sparkly man cheeks.

Also, that comment you made about your ex-boyfriend really cracked me up! I don’t…have the addiction to…ellipses…mine’s… more of the… parenthetical variety(obviously 😉

By the way, nice to meet you, Karen (Tabs too, of course)! I recently subscribed and I’m really loving it–you have a superb writing ability, good-looking blog design (font-type included), quality photography, and a deep love for big cats (I have a big boy cat myself). Plus, you always come up with something that makes me laugh (thanks so much for that)! You’ve already given me some new ideas for products I want to try out soon.

Okay, I’m really embarrassed, at first glance I read those shorts as saying C**kstar, erm, I was so horrified by the idea of them that I misread it.

Really annoyed today, as I rang up the place that we’re having our reception to check on some stuff and they now say they can’t offer us the room we booked because they’re renovating. That room was the only reason we booked the place! And their measly make-up to us is a free champagne toast. Ha, seriously annoyed right now and we’re getting more than a toast from them!

    Hi Karen,
I am a Thierry Mugler fan and not only love his makeup line but his frangrance Alien! I wear some of his makeup all the time as it is very long lasting. I think I have tried almost all the products! Most of them are nice but others are just UNIQUE and MUST haves! Call me crazy but I love to wear the eye liner cream and the magma fusion gloss to the gym! I don’t have to reaply the liner as once it dries it stays on the whole day! and the gloss is perfect as it gives my lips a rosy stained natural look! (and Yes! I am a latina who can’t leave the house without makeup;-)) Karen, you’re right! The mirrored packaking is really stunning and pretty to carry in your purse! I can go on and on and talk about all the other products I love but now I have to say “hasta pronto” as my baby is crying for some food…
and by the way, I am not only a makeup lover but makeup artist 🙂

This is embarassing, but I read “ROCKSTAR” as something else that I don’t think I can type here… 🙁

Wow – some great make-up in there from Thierry Mugler. And ROFL to the ‘Rockstar’ swim trunks. I wouldn’t be walking next to my bf if he wore them 🙂 — Jules

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
