Smashbox Muse Collection Spring 2009 Face of the Day

January 22nd, 2009 by Karen 27 Comments

Has this ever happened to you?

It’s winter and raining. You’re doing your best to stay warm and dry, but at the precise moment you walk under an awning outside a stream of ice cold water hits you in the back of the neck and drips under your shirt.

HURRAY! Cold rain, huzzah!

No, girls, I’m not a big fan of winter, and today I was missing the sunshine somethin’ fierce.

I felt cold to my bones and turned, as I often do, to makeup for warmth. 🙂 I turned to the Smashbox Muse Collection for Spring 2009 hoping that its fresh colors and cheerful packaging would light a fire under my…

Swatches from left to right: Hybrid 2 in 1 Luminizing Primer in Bare Canvas, Lip Paint in Luminary, Lip Paint in Artiste, Blush Rush in Masterpiece, Bionic Mascara in Black Violet

I tested five products from the 11-piece collection today (full review coming shortly!). I liked them so much that I couldn’t wait to share this face of the day.

That’s Blush Rush in Masterpiece ($24) and Hybrid 2 in 1 Luminizing Primer in Bare Canvas ($34) on my cheeks, and Lip Paint lipgloss in Artist ($21) on my lips.

To complement the matte peachy coral cheeks and shimmery berry lip, I went with a delicate purple eye following the steps I outlined in the Stila Convertible Eye Color in Violet Tutorial from last September.

To complete the look, I applied three (!) layers of Bionic Mascara in Black Violet ($19) on my lashes.

I really love the makeup the model in this campaign is wearing. I don’t have the right eye palette to duplicate it, but I think I’ll try to get as close as I can. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

Mario Lopez time!

Are you watching the new season of America’s Best Dance Crew? I LOVE THAT SHOW! I only wish A.C. Slater, aka Mario Lopez, wouldn’t say the words “Master Mix” as often as he does. I guess I’ll just have to bear it!

I hope an all girls crew makes it to the end this time. I’m rooting for Team Fly Khicks… and not just because they have good taste in footwear (although that’s part of it). 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oh, I like this FOTD! The primer looks really nice but I am not even halfway done my lancome primer and I really wanted to try the NARS primer with SPF…

Are you thinking about getting the palette? I keep seeing it at SDM but I haven’t swatched it yet (too distracted by other collections… LOL).

This collection looks sooo pretty. I totally tried to rock the under-eye gold swoosh the other day (inspired by that same awesome promo pic you posted), but the liner by the corners of my eyes disintegrated. I shall try again using waterproof liner sealant (have MUFE now, they make a heavy-duty one). Urban Decay Acid Rain es looks like a potential dupe for what the model’s wearing.

Remember the AC Slater jerry curl mullet? Awesome.

This collection really caught my eye- but I haven’t tried anything from it yet. You look so great in purples! That is one of my favorite eye colors. NARS Jolie Poupee is my favorite – the shimmery violet side! Can’t wait to hear more from you on this stuff.

Master Mix! He does say that too much! I love this show. I have such a crush on Shane Sparks too. I like Fly Kicks. I hope those goofy contoritionist dancers get the boot. I can appreciate their skills, but honesty I couldn’t watch! It was too much shoulder popping (literally!)

I love everytime you do the purple eye, it looks just so amazing 🙂 But yeah, it’s been so unpleasant (albeit, little more unpleasant than normal) over the last two days compared to the pleasant sunny weather (no wonder we’re called “Sunny California”–we have warm sun while the rest of the country is buried in snow!) from three weeks prior!

Makeup makes for an amazing way to keep warm, happy, and busy 😉

    You look so pretty!

Oooh, I’m rooting for Fly Khicks, too. One of the girls actually went to the same middle school as me.

Looking forward to the rest of the review! 🙂

The collection looks so pretty! I have yet to try Bionic Mascara, but seeing it in that gorgeous, almost royal, violet colour is convincing enough for me to go try it!

Just like you, I’m not a very big fan of the winter season. I was born and raised in the Philippines and came to SF to study, when I thought I was going to CA I was imagining sun and beaches, uh… I guess I missed the mark. But! I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this city and (despite the gross, wet, winter weather) this city still makes me smile =)

I’m currently watching the rerun of ABDC’s premier in anticipation for tonight’s episode. I’m really excited! I want to see what those cloggers will do with this week’s challenge and I’m a very big fan of Fly Khicks already!! I wonder where they get their cute rubbers?

Anyway, I hope you had a beautiful day nonetheless, because you sure look it! Hope Tabs and El Hub are warm & well =)

Hi Karen! I want that Bionic Mascara in Black Violet!!! I have green eyes and I’ve been wanting to try a dark purple mascara for a long time. But *sob* I can’t find Smashbox products anywhere in Taiwan! It costs so much to ship it here that it’s not really worth it. Can you recomend any other purple mascaras from other brands? I can get almost every other high-end brand here ( MAC, Chanel, Dior, Bobbi Brown, Bennifit, Anna Sui, Nars…) Thanks! Have a great day!

    O-h-h-h, girl,
You know that I have been eyeballing that Smashbox collection for some time. I have scoped it out 4 times at Sephora and still have not bought it. The lip glosses are too sheer for me. But the eyeshadows and eye pencils sing, “spring, spring, spring”. Speaking of spring, we are having a heat wave today with temperatures up to 44!! Then tomorrow back into the freezer at 24 degrees. I am thinking on the Muse collection but at the same time, I am trying to be good and not buy stuff. A-w-w-w-w shucks
you sure know how to tempt a girl. Have a great weekend. Louise

    Hi Justine,

I’m not sure yet. If I can dupe the colors then I think I will probably pass. It sure is pretty, though!

    Happy Friday. 🙂

    Hi Ashley Jean,

Yup, I remember the mullet. Remember how he used to call Jessie Spano his “Mama”? HA HA HA!

Lemme know how your look turns out and if the waterproof sealant does the trick to keep the lower liner in place. 🙂

    Hi Laurie,

What did you think of last night’s show? I loved the Strikers All Stars’ performance.

I wasn’t sure what to think of that bone breaking style of dance at first, either. I thought at first maybe that it made me uncomfortable because it was new to me and I just didn’t understand it. I think it’s neat, but I don’t know how flexible (ha!) the style is going to be in the end.

    Hi Fabienne,

I agree. There’s nothing like some bronzer or a highlighter or even a bright lipstick to pick your spirit up.

For a second there the sunshine fooled me into thinking it was already spring! 🙂

    Hi Lesley,

What do you think about last night’s episode? I’m kinda rooting for the cloggers now, too, LOL!

Yah, when I lived in SF a few years ago I found it rough during the summer months (I lived out in the Richmond). On those rare, sunny days the city was so gorgeous, though. I miss it.

What are you studying? Are you in college?

    Hi Shana T.,

Dior makes one that’s pretty good — it’s called Diorshow Plum. You can see it here:

Go Purple with Diorshow Plum Mascara

I’ve heard that Benefit’s Bad Gal Blue (not Bad Gal Plum) also registers well on the lashes as a dark purple.

    Hope this helps!
