NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer: A First Look

November 10th, 2016 by Karen 12 Comments

NARS is coming out with a new concealer, and my dark circles are excited! FOR REAL THO.

Hey, want some pot?

If you live in California and voted on Tuesday, you will probably get that joke. 🙂

No, I’m not talking about that kind of pot. Well…

I’m talking about these pots of NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer, a new full-coverage concealer coming to NARS counters in January.

Are you familiar with NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer? Comes in a little tube with a wand like a lipgloss? It’s great and has pretty good coverage. It’s one of my favorites, but I’m kind of a concealer ho…

Err…well, maybe I shouldn’t phrase it that way. How about, “I try a lot of different concealers”?

Anyway, NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer is supposed to be more opaque and have fuller coverage.

If you use NARS Radiant, you might also recognize these shade names. They’re the same names, which makes it easy to find your color (yay!). I did a quick swatch on a piece of paper yesterday and, just eyeballing it, the colors look very similar, too.

NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer
16 shades, permanent, $30, available January 1 at NARS boutiques and online
Chantilly (true ivory shade for a light complexion), Vanilla (tiny cast of pink or a light complexion), Creme Brulee (fair with a light pink undertone), Cannelle (light with a peachy undertone), Honey (warm peach for a light to medium complexion), Custard (yellow tone for a light to medium complexion), Macadamia (medium with a peachy undertone), Ginger (golden undertone for a medium complexion), Biscuit (medium dark natural balance of pink and yellow undertones), Caramel (medium dark yellow and golden undertones), Chestnut (medium with a pink undertone), Amande (medium dark with golden olive undertones), Hazelnut (medium dark with a warm red undertone), Cafe (dark shade with warm red undertones), Cacao (dark shade with deep golden brown undertones), Dark Coffee (dark brown with an olive undertone)

“NARS’ highest coverage concealer yet delivers natural natural-looking coverage in an oil-free cream formula that blurs, concealers and smooths imperfections with its soft-focus smoothing complex. Optimal Diffusion Powder helps maximize light diffusion with spherical surface powders designed to absorb and refract light with a powerful optical effect. Instantly transforms the look of skin to help blur imperfections. Advanced powders created with a unique, interwoven structure lay flat while staying connected for the highest level of coverage with the lightest touch. Resists settling into fine lines and pores. Collagen-boosting peptides smooth and reduce the appearances of wrinkles and pores. Hyaluronic acid helps to hydrate, soften and plump the skin for a healthier-looking complexion. Antioxidant Daily Defense delivers a cocktail of Vitamin A, C and E for environmental defense.”

According to the PR, these are supposed to blur the heck out of your pores (I’m paraphrasing) without settling into your fine lines, and since I have fine lines, I’m hoping they live up to the hype.

I’m hoping very hard.

I’ll be testing them soon. Fingers and toes crossed.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Most of my favorite concealers come in tubes and have wands. I don’t usually like concealers that come in pots because I think it takes more effort to dip my finger or brush into a pot. I don’t know… What’s your favorite concealer packaging? Pots, tubes, tubes with wands? Don’t care at all? Inquiring minds want to know.

Stick or Liquid! The only stick I can use is the Cle de Peau – others break me out or are too greasy – but I love my CdP, and I’ve repurchased it many times even though it’s (gulp) $70. It covers almost completely and applies quickly and easily. It requires blending and it does crease a little, but you can buff it without losing coverage because it’s so opaque. Easily portable and lasts a long time, since you only use a very little. The only downside is shade selection – there are only a few shades and they’re aimed at fair-skinned Asian women, so Ivory is too light but Beige too dark and orange, and everything else is super-yellow.
My favorite liquid is MAC Pro Longwear. Great coverage and you only need a tiny bit and it lasts really well. It covers undereye circle without creasing or gooping up in lines, and it covers blemishes almost completely and doesn’t wear off or slide around. The packaging is great – a little pump bottle – though the pump dispenses was too much and I end up wasting a lot. It’s very inexpensive for the amount you get and color matching is easy. Sadly, like all MAC products, it breaks me out. I wish I knew what it is in MAC products that my skin won’t tolerate, because they are some of the best and most cost-effective products around. Sad face.

Definitely going to try this. I am aess with liquid concealers because I’ve never had to wear them until recently.

I like the way you swatched these! 🙂 I’m also hoping for major pore blurring, fingers crossed!

Hi Karen… these seem to be amazing, but, I am afraid of shades.. In radiant creamy concelears Ginger is peachy (which i like for my under eyes) and light for me and biscuit is dark.

excited to read your thoughts on this karen! One thing I’ll always love about Nars is their shade range. So nice to see a company offer shades from the very fair to those with a deeper complexion

I hope these have as much coverage as the Cle de Peau stick concealer and the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. What I love about NARS is their shade range.
Some of my favorite concealers are Cle de Peau stick, NARS radiant creamy and MAC Pro Longwear (hate the pump though because it dispenses waaaaaay to much product at one time).
Not sure it matters how it’s dispensed, since I usually blend out with my fingers or a brush. I just like to be able to control the amount dispensed. MAC, I’m looking at you. Please fix the pump on the Pro Longwear concealer because we all hate wasting product.

    Super curious!

I’m rotating a few different concealers right now, but I seem to usually use liquid – I have a BareMienrals BareSkin serum concealer and Lancôme Effacernes for liquids, and I also own the Glossier Stretch Concealer in a pot.

I need some help with my large pores, so I would spring for this. Let’s hope it’s good!

How is it that all those colors look so neutral on that white page, but, whenever I put a NARS base product on my face, it looks too yellow? I’m going to have to try Vanilla and see if I can make it work… everyone raves about NARS’ concealers!

I wear chestnut for ny concealer and caramel as a highlight. I just receive the Sanford matte concealer in chestnut and it’s a shade too light so if you hand deep skin, go for a shade darker than you use in the creamy concealer.
