Laura Mercier Lip Velvets Feel Like Gloss but Look Like Lipstick

September 12th, 2008 by Karen 28 Comments

‘Sup, girlies? How was your day? I managed to finish most of my errands and between loads of laundry popped by my local Laura Mercier counter to try the new Lip Velvets ($22) line o’ lipsticks from the Cherries Noir fall makeup collection.

You know how it feels when you hear a lot about a product before its release and figure there’s no way it can live up to your expectations? Well, that’s kinda how I felt on my way to the counter today. I’d been hearing from a friend that Lip Velvets were the makeup missing link, perfectly balancing the feel of a gloss with the look of a lipstick.

Bold words, right?

Lip Velvets come in five semi-matte shades; that’s Cassis (a deep berry) in the top picture there.

Cassis feels thick, slick and semi-sticky — a lot like a gloss. It’s more moisturizing than I expected, but the finish definitely doesn’t glisten like a traditional gloss. It’s more like a semi-matte finish with just a touch of shine.

So far so good.

After two hours, during which time I drank a bottle of water and ate a bag of chips, Cassis was even less shiny than it had been when I applied it. What remained was a lovely matte stain.

I don’t know if these are the missing makeup link, but I think they’re pretty cool. If you want the look of a matte lipstick with the feel of gloss, check ’em out! 🙂

Lip Velvets are fragrance- and flavor-free and come with an easy-to-use doe-foot applicator.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I don’t have any Laura Mercier products but I’ve read a lot of rave reviews. I like the look of cherry blossom – I may have to invest.

Mocha Rouge seems to be reaching out with it’s semi-glossy hands saying buy me!

I like the way LM named it: lip velvet, so romantic don’t you think? Cassis is a very pretty color for the season. Too bad I don’t have a LM counter to try it out 🙁

Yay! I’m finally feeling better after being in bed with a fever for the last two days!

I checked these out on Monday, and I thought they all looked so light, I couldn’t figure out which one they had used for the model shot (it must have been Cassis)! Maybe I’ll try them again, I do like the look on the picture!

I ordered Cherry Blossom last week. I hauled some Laura Mercier at Neimans for the beauty event. I’m excited to try it out!

That color looks very pretty on you. Did you end up getting anything?

Ooh, I may have to check those out. A co-worker’s hubby works for the company that manufactures LM. They’ve got an “overstock” store and she said nothing is over $5 at the store, BUT, you must have an employee ID card and matching photo ID to get in (only given to employees and their spouse). So I may send her on a mission soon. 🙂

ooooh! Sounds a lot more promising than a matte paint with a gloss that goes over it. I’ve always hated those. Thanks for the review!

i’m down for cassis and mocha rouge – I’ll have to try this when I have money again – I can’t wear lipsticks anymore since they tend to dry out my lips but this sounds promising!

    Hi Marisol,

They have some good stuff. It’s definitely not a flashy line, but there’s lots of really beautiful makeup.

    Hi Gio,

They feel really nice on the lips — I was suprised! I initially was afraid that the product would feel dry, but that’s not the case at all.

    Hi Laurie,

Nice! I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.

I didn’t end up getting it because I had to get back home before traffic hit! I figure if I want it in a week I can go back.
