‘Sup, girlies? How was your day? I managed to finish most of my errands and between loads of laundry popped by my local Laura Mercier counter to try the new Lip Velvets ($22) line o’ lipsticks from the Cherries Noir fall makeup collection.
You know how it feels when you hear a lot about a product before its release and figure there’s no way it can live up to your expectations? Well, that’s kinda how I felt on my way to the counter today. I’d been hearing from a friend that Lip Velvets were the makeup missing link, perfectly balancing the feel of a gloss with the look of a lipstick.
Bold words, right?
Lip Velvets come in five semi-matte shades; that’s Cassis (a deep berry) in the top picture there.
Cassis feels thick, slick and semi-sticky — a lot like a gloss. It’s more moisturizing than I expected, but the finish definitely doesn’t glisten like a traditional gloss. It’s more like a semi-matte finish with just a touch of shine.
So far so good.
After two hours, during which time I drank a bottle of water and ate a bag of chips, Cassis was even less shiny than it had been when I applied it. What remained was a lovely matte stain.
I don’t know if these are the missing makeup link, but I think they’re pretty cool. If you want the look of a matte lipstick with the feel of gloss, check ’em out! 🙂
Lip Velvets are fragrance- and flavor-free and come with an easy-to-use doe-foot applicator.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
That’s a very pretty color! Cherry Blossom is also calling my name! 😛 Happy weekend Karen!

I’ll probably try these when I get to the UK. Royal Plum is screaming HG for me. Haha
I don’t have any Laura Mercier products but I’ve read a lot of rave reviews. I like the look of cherry blossom – I may have to invest.

This product sounds very interesting. I love Royal Plum, it’s a beautiful shade. I think I’ll probably try it soon.
gios last blog post..Know your ingredients: Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis)
Mocha Rouge seems to be reaching out with it’s semi-glossy hands saying buy me!
I like the way LM named it: lip velvet, so romantic don’t you think? Cassis is a very pretty color for the season. Too bad I don’t have a LM counter to try it out 🙁

That sounds like my kind of lip product ^^

Yay! I’m finally feeling better after being in bed with a fever for the last two days!
I checked these out on Monday, and I thought they all looked so light, I couldn’t figure out which one they had used for the model shot (it must have been Cassis)! Maybe I’ll try them again, I do like the look on the picture!
I ordered Cherry Blossom last week. I hauled some Laura Mercier at Neimans for the beauty event. I’m excited to try it out!
That color looks very pretty on you. Did you end up getting anything?

Ooh, I may have to check those out. A co-worker’s hubby works for the company that manufactures LM. They’ve got an “overstock” store and she said nothing is over $5 at the store, BUT, you must have an employee ID card and matching photo ID to get in (only given to employees and their spouse). So I may send her on a mission soon. 🙂
ooooh! Sounds a lot more promising than a matte paint with a gloss that goes over it. I’ve always hated those. Thanks for the review!
i’m down for cassis and mocha rouge – I’ll have to try this when I have money again – I can’t wear lipsticks anymore since they tend to dry out my lips but this sounds promising!
Hi Phoebe,
Happy weekend to you, too, girl!
Hi Marisol,
They have some good stuff. It’s definitely not a flashy line, but there’s lots of really beautiful makeup.
Hi Fie,
When are you officially leaving for the UK? Are you all packed and ready to go?
Hi Beth,
She has some really fab products. I suggest her foundations, tinted moisturizers and her powders.
Hi Gio,
They feel really nice on the lips — I was suprised! I initially was afraid that the product would feel dry, but that’s not the case at all.
Hi Xtina,
🙂 Try it! Mocha Rouge is a very pretty shade… I liked that one, too.
Hi Dao,
Oh, that’s too bad. Good thing that there are other makeup brands to get distracted by!
Hi Karen B.,
It’s really neat. You should give a try if you get the chance.
Hi Glosslizard,
Glad to hear you are feeling better! Happy weekend!
Hi Laurie,
Nice! I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.
I didn’t end up getting it because I had to get back home before traffic hit! I figure if I want it in a week I can go back.
Hi Kelly,
That’s a fabulous hook up! 🙂 Let me know if you end up doing a lil’ hauling so I can vicariously live through you, LOL.
Hi Shannon,
You’re welcome! Hope you’re having a good weekend. 🙂
Hi Lexi,
They feel really nice on the lips — all cushy and soft!
I’m leaving this Friday! 😀 I’ve packed..mostly. Took me a while to pack all my cosmetics though. *prays hard they won’t shatter in transit*
Hi Fie,
That’s so exciting. I’m really happy for you. I hope the trip goes smoothly (and that nothing breaks). Soon enough you’ll be settled in and exploring your new town!
