Illamasqua Lip Look: Thinking Outside the Box

June 20th, 2009 by Karen 31 Comments

KAPOW!

Illamasqua’s Lipstick in Box ($23 USD before shipping) hits like a heavyweight champ, and it may even give MAC Russian Red a run for its money.

Both are creamy bluish reds, but Box’s teensy touch of orange adds a warmth not present in Russian Red.

If you wanted to knock ’em out with Russian Red but found it too cool for your skin tone, don’t forget about Box.

Named after Illamasqua co-founder Alex Box, it applies with opaque, rich color and lasts all day long without feathering.

I think I’m in lurve. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

That lipstick is def worth the international shipping. I was going to splurge on some mac lipsticks, but I might go for this instead.

      Hi Shontay,

Yah, the two that I’ve tried are really great lipsticks. I like them a lot! 🙂

What MAC colors were you thinking about getting?

I also love the way this lippie looks on you! I wonder how one would do eyes/rest of face. You should use it for a Face of the Day =)

      Hi Jenna,

You could do a few things:

1.) wash of gold or champagne shimmer over the entire eye (concentrate most of the color on the lid)
2.) neutral beige on the brow bone and brown on the lid with thick cat liner
3.) neutral beige over entire lid and false lashes

I agree with Redhead — keep the eyes simple and non-flashy so it doesn’t compete with the red lips.

Jenna, I’d probably pair it with a neutral to warm copper slightly smokey eye and pale pink cheeks 🙂 Just don’t overdo the eyes. That’s how I complement my red lip looks!
Karen, that lipstick is SO pretty on you. Too bad I’m ghostly pale and my wallet’s hurting, and so far the only red that works on me is MAC’s Dare You, blotted to an opaque matte red. It looks good on me, but I need to find something less pricey! I’m thinking about trying Revlon’s new Colorstay liquid lipstick in a red shade.

      Hi Redhead,

I checked out the Revlon website and they have the Colorstays listed by color family (yay! I love it when they do this — makes it so much easier). The swatches are probably not accurate but a few that look like they might be good are Top Tomato and Stellar Sunrise. 🙂

    Hey Karen!

Illamasqua is great isnt it and it looks FAB on you. Its not too expensive to buy over here (about the same as or a little less than MAC) hopefully they will take the brand worldwide soon 🙂

Wow…I’m liking this..and this is coming from a girl who’s scared of Red Lippy’s (haven’t found one I like yet)..But this looks like more of a warm color which is great. Do you know if they have this line in Heathrow Duty Free? I’m probably going in a month. Also, Karen..Are the Mac Travel line still available? (want to pick that up too!)..Thanks!!

NOT that I needed another red lipstick, but I took advantage of Illamasqua’s “Buy two, get the third free” offer on lipsticks.
I wanted Atomic, but it was out of stock, so I threw in Box.
These photos make me SO glad I did!
I’m pale (MAC NW15), with large green eyes, black-brown hair, and good lips, so I love to rock the reds!

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
